8 players for 25th overall

ryanmkeane : 3/28/2023 12:05 pm
My estimation - NYG will be picking from these 8 guys and this is how I see it shaking out:

1. WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba - unlikely, borderline impossible that he'll be there. If he is there around pick 20, watch for a trade up
2. WR Zay Flowers - possibly there, may trade up if he's available in the low 20s, but may not want to move up 5-6 picks to get him
3. WR Quetnin Johnston - I don't believe NYG would have crazy interest in him, if he's there at 25 they would possibly consider, but not sure they love the physical makeup for this offense, he might have trouble getting open in the pros
4. CB Cam Smith - could fall due to some character concerns, but the dinner with NYG brass would appear that they have real interest - I believe he would warrant serious consideration if still available at 25
5. CB Joey Porter Jr. - unlikely to be there but would likely be the selection if he is, even over WR perhaps
6. Edge Lukas Van Ness - could slip due to a run on WRs - would be in the mix, value might be too good to pass up if he's there
7. IOL O'Cyrus Torrence - should be and likely is on the shortlist - would be a tough decision to pass on him if WR and CB targets are gone, I believe he's the selection if that is the case
8. S Brian Branch - bit thin on talent in the secondary, I imagine pairing him with McKinney would be enticing

When this all shakes out, I think Zay Flowers will be NYG's 1st round selection. They'll see JSN gone, the CBs gone, and may trade a 4th or 5th to move up 2-3 slots to get him.
I’m hoping

one of JSN or Joey Porter Jr drops. Would be ecstatic with either of those two.
I think you are missing CBs and a LB

Like Simpson that can be moved around into multiple positions.

I don't think they'd go for another CB at that pick, if the top ones are all gone
Maybe Witherspoon?
Keaton028 : 3/28/2023 12:27 pm : link
Or are you thinking he’ll realistically go sooner?

He'll be way gone
I have to modify this a little
allstarjim : 3/28/2023 12:35 pm : link
I know you put 8 guys there, and acknowledged that some guys would be unlikely to get to 25.

If I'm going to do a similar list that I believe is more realistic, I'd have to take guys out of here.

Mainly JSN and Porter, just don't see them getting even to pick 20, much less 25.

Branch I have to rule out. He played corner and because of the AA limitations, he's projected to safety, and I don't think a position convert, particularly to the safety position, a position where the Giants have guys they like to play next to McKinney in Pinnock and Belton, that 25 is very rich for a guy like Branch. I wouldn't consider him at #57, even, I just think there will be better team fits there.

And I'll add some guys to give me a list of 10:

Jalin Hyatt
Keion White
Calijah Kancey
Deonte Banks
Kelee Ringo
...
ryanmkeane : 3/28/2023 12:36 pm : link
good call on White, didn't even think of him.

Hyatt doesn't feel like NYG to me.
Rankings of the CBs seem to be all over the place.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/28/2023 12:40 pm : link
Gonzalez and Witherspoon are the only ones nobody thinks could be there at 25. Porter looks like a long shot, but not inconceivable. The rest are anyone's guess: Banks, Smith, Forbes, Brents, Ringo, Phillips, Turner, Stevenson, etc., etc. The Giants won't get a Sauce. Let's hope they don't get a lemon (or an Apple.)
I wouldn't rule out an edge rusher at 25
nyjuggernaut2 : 3/28/2023 12:42 pm : link
Not much depth behind Thibs and Azeez right now, and Azeez can't stay healthy.

The question I have is, with the signing of Okereke, are you really going to spend another pick on a linebacker that you may only play on 2-downs. I don't think they would.
Robinson could be there
jvm52106 : 3/28/2023 12:59 pm : link
and that would pose a possible problem/solution where maybe we draft him, pull the tag off Barkley and use the $10 mil cap savings for other players.

* I think we also might have a DT available at 25 that we were not expecting and that could create a situation where we move LW and draft his replacement.

and Azeez prolly isn't getting a 2nd contract here.

problem is that picking at #25 means that the first and second ranked players on their board at WR, CB, and DE will likely be gone.

Assuming JSN is gone, my guess is they'll take Flowers, maybe after a small trade up. My wild card pick is still Gervon Dexter.

I understand this thinking and honestly I would agree based on what we've seen with how Schoen has addressed the WR position in free agency. I simply hope that this is a case of Schoen playing his cards close to the vest. I think the value with Hyatt is that he gives you something you don't have with the other guys at the position, and would create softer defensive boxes.

Hyatt is built like Devonta Smith and has excellent straight line speed. I would not rule him out.

Has somehow gotten lost in the mock woods lately....i'd be thrilled to get him!!
If JSN is gone

I wonder if they could create an scheme that could feature Quentin Johnston. His size is really intriguing, but if he has trouble separating that could throw off the whole timing of the offensive game plan. That seems to be why Golladay couldn’t find playing time.
The guy I hope to see at #25

is Lukas Van Ness. If he is there, I will be very surprised if the Giants pass on him.
I see

Van Ness mocked to Philly and Dallas a lot. But I know mocks can be absolutely worthless.

He has size but he doesn’t use it. He plays like he’s 5’9
I agree with you regarding Flowers,
barens : 3/28/2023 9:03 pm : link
I'd be happy if he fell to us and he was the pick, but I don't think he's worth trading for.

I disagree with you regarding Hyatt, I think he should definitely be in the conversation, especially since Tennessee's offense looked quite similar to ours. But putting up those kind of numbers in the SEC is nothing to sneeze at.

I don't know where to stand with Quentin Johnson either. On the one hand, he's a guy you can throw the ball down the field to and can make some difficult, contested catches. But consistency at TCU is a question, it will be interesting to see who the Giants send to TCU's pro day on Thursday, if they send anyone.

You can never have too many Dexters...

Although previously the Giants had one too many Eli's and three too many Coreys (Miller, Widmer and Raymond in 1994).
