NFL changes camp cut rules its now 90 ->54

After several seasons with multiple cutdown days, the NFL is returning to one deadline for teams to trim their rosters.

During the NFL Owners Meetings on Tuesday, a proposal was approved that would call for the Eagles and 31 other NFL teams to trim down their rosters from a 90-man to a 53-man roster by Tuesday, August 29.

That means over 1,100 cuts around the NFL will take place after the third and final preseason game.

The unemployment rate will tick up on Tuesday August 29.

to sign all those cuts..
Seems unnecessary.
.
I wonder what the rationale is/was for this?

Seemed to make more sense for everyone to stagger the cuts with at least one earlier cutdown. This is going to be a lot of players hitting the market at once.
Has to tick off veterans

who are cut.
Other teams don’t know if they can still bring something , or sucked early in camp but we’re kept on by the rule.
Lots of tryouts before season start.
Some of you

missed this part. Teams can release players according to when they see fit. The only thing that is changing is the mandatory dates for cutting players. Teams will still be trimming down the roster as they go along.
As long as there’s a bye week before the season,

It’s not that big of a change… or am I missing something?
Yeah this seems like it'll create quite a mess/scramble

right at the very end of the offseason. In my mind, it appears to make it harder for a guy to get on with another team. Invest all that time in one team's offseason program and then get jettisoned right at the last minute. New team has little to no chance to do research on you, your condition, how you looked in the offseason, etc. prior to the season beginning.

I (clearly) don't get the rationale.
Coaches probably like it

because it allows them to keep everyone through all the preseason games

It also allows them to make all their you've been cut phone calls at once
Vets have to hate this

Now a team has only a week to figure out if they want to be on the hook for a whole year's salary and cut someone to do it. They'll miss week 1 for sure, and likely many more until injuries start piling up.
That is going to be a busy day.

I wonder if GM's will just set up a robo-call
I don't know how much it matters

The overwhelming majority of those guys aren't going to even get a sniff from other teams for the practice squad.

If you do multiple rounds of cuts, it's really only the guys in the final round who are going to get any attention anyway.
If they did not explain the rationale, my guess is that the reason is
injuries.

Here goes: Let's say on the first cut-down date you cut 3 CBs leaving 6 CBs on the team, but by August 29, two of the remaining 6 CBs are injured. Now you only have the 4 CBs and you have to hunt for more. If you can keep all 9 CBs until the final cut-down date you are better off.

Agreed.

Teams can still release a vet a little early to do him a solid and give him a chance to sign elsewhere before cut down day.
The first rounds of cuts

has produced nearly 0 signings for many years. So why bother with it?
I agree with the move
Spiciest Memelord : 3/29/2023 11:25 am : link
its a simpler process. No real reason to stagger cuts.
