After several seasons with multiple cutdown days, the NFL is returning to one deadline for teams to trim their rosters. During the NFL Owners Meetings on Tuesday, a proposal was approved that would call for the Eagles and 31 other NFL teams to trim down their rosters from a 90-man to a 53-man roster by Tuesday, August 29. That means over 1,100 cuts around the NFL will take place after the third and final preseason game. |
Other teams don’t know if they can still bring something , or sucked early in camp but we’re kept on by the rule.
Lots of tryouts before season start.
I (clearly) don't get the rationale.
It also allows them to make all their you've been cut phone calls at once

I wonder if GM's will just set up a robo-call
If you do multiple rounds of cuts, it's really only the guys in the final round who are going to get any attention anyway.
Here goes: Let's say on the first cut-down date you cut 3 CBs leaving 6 CBs on the team, but by August 29, two of the remaining 6 CBs are injured. Now you only have the 4 CBs and you have to hunt for more. If you can keep all 9 CBs until the final cut-down date you are better off.

Agreed.
Teams can still release a vet a little early to do him a solid and give him a chance to sign elsewhere before cut down day.
