PHOENIX — The Giants and Jets will play on a new synthetic field this season at MetLife Stadium, but the co-owner of the Giants hopes that is not a permanent solution. “I foresee a day, my hope is we can get to a day at some point in the future when we can have a grass field that we’re able to maintain with two different teams and all the other events we have,” John Mara said Tuesday at the NFL meetings. “I think we can get there at some point, Maybe it’s a hybrid product or something.” |
They did. But Mara mentioned a “hybrid” grass surface. I believe this is what GB now uses and is some king of grass blended with synthetic to make it much more durable
That would be awesome.
Having grass would be easier if the Giants were the only team playing in their stadium. A field having to deal with not one, but two teams, is alot more wear and tear than just the one. The Jets going to Queens would be terrific for all parties.
Exactly....biggest market in the country and you have two teams sharing a stadium. Same with LA. At least LA has a nice stadium. Yesterday, When Goodell said 'there isn't an owner in the league who does put the fans first'(I'm paraphrasing), I LOL'd. What a joke.
I really hope they do get real grass at the stadium.

Come on *billionaires* figure this out!
Oh, we can't because it's a shared facility? Why that's an excellent idea! Force the Jets to leave for their own stadium. Then we can move to grass, either per-game or permanently. Take the money you spend on turning the stadium green and put that toward grass field for gameday.
it was a disaster. Tray system if i am not mistaken.
Best hope is the hybrid Mara mentions that professional soccer teams are starting to use. Obviously there needs more development im sure due to the size of the football players and how much they rip up the field.
From the Wikipedia page:
Desso GrassMaster is a sports playing field surface made of natural grass that has artificial fibres added to it. The unique part of this system is the artificial grass fibres, stuck 20 cm deep, which cover 3% of the surface. During the growing process, the roots of the natural grass mix with the man-made grass fibres to anchor the turf to product a stable, solid, and even field with better drainage and better playing comfort.

My memory is the issues largely came from players getting feet stuck in the seams between the trays. I’d hope they can come up with better way to install/maintain it now
If I'm Mara, I'm all over this.
The interlocking plates of grass is the best idea but storage and movement is the problem also it has been mentioned in other threads players can see and feel the space been plates which is even more scary.
Everyone would lose their minds if in December getting ready for the playoffs we are playing on frozen mud.
Unless you stopped all the other games and events it a difficult problem to solve.
Hard to evict someone from the house they also own.
Good info on the financials, although slightly dated.

So the Jets in the hypothetical get their dream scenario and the Giants are stuck holding the bag with a stadium they never wanted thats compromised in all ways and they'd have to foot the bill on a new building to be satisfied. Nice.

I know this may seem like a really dumb question, but is there some reason they can't build a platform over the grass that would be used for non sporting events?

From the Jets point of view. Unfortunate part is it would leave the Giants with this White Elephant of a relatively new stadium that nobody likes…

And the Jets (winners in the last millennium...) would get a Super Bowl, and we never will...
Virtually every grass used in stadiums is some type of hybrid. Lambeau is only used for the Packers games, not two NFL teams. Also, don't think there are other events there during the season, such as concerts, the occasional college game, etc., that can hurt the grass.
They do, but it doesn't necessarily work well. This past pre-season, the Bears had a game shortly after a concert, and even though there was a "plastic-tiled event flooring" over the turn, the field was reportedly in bad shape for the game. (Maybe the concert was blamed for problems that already existed with the turf, I have no idea).

The problem at MetLife is that the geniuses who designed the ugliest stadium in the NFL never thought of setting up the stadium to allow grass fields to be rolled in. If they did, we could have had two separate fields, one for each team (with an artificial field underneath them, for colleges and other events there).
Of course, they could have thought of it, and ownership for both teams might have put the kibosh on it because of the extra expense.

Were it random ,our injury rates wouldn't consistently fall as far outside a normal distribution as it does.
It's tough to evict a co-tenant. This isn't Giant Stadium anymore.
This is correct. And in some NFL stadiums, like SoFi, rows of seats will have to be removed to meet FIFA requirements.

What's your theory?

The Jets do not have nearly the same rate..
Greedy? It is a business(es) that pays a huge mortgage. Those other activities, besides needing a place for their product, help pay for the stadium and facilities.
