Goodell has shown since taking over as commissioner, he can grow league revenues. The most ambitious and potentially lucrative way is international expansion. “We don’t know if it’s going to happen in two years, five years, or whenever, but there’s going to be an international division,” one owner who spoke on condition of anonymity told Front Office Sports. The NFL held its first regular season international contest in 2005, a game between the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City. All 32 clubs have played internationally since, mainly in England. There are five international games on the 2023 schedule, three in London and two more scheduled to be played somewhere in Germany. “I think what we are focused on is building capacity so if there were that opportunity — whether a club wanted to consider relocation or potentially looking at expansion — we are in that mode,” said Peter O’Reilly, the NFL’s executive VP of club business, international, & league events. ”In London, where we’ve been for a long time, and now in Germany, we’re making sure we’ve got the stadium partners, the governmental partners, and the fan support to sustain that possibility.” A four-team European division would be unprecedented. |
My first thought exactly.
Easy NFL fix though! All they need to do is continue to alter the rules so defense is useless, and QB’s are treated like they’re wearing silk dresses.
Ok that’s possibly one team and with an up and coming team they’ll draw pretty good in Jax so to me a move is possible but not likely.
Who are the “others”?
Agreed.
Look what’s happened with the UFC.
Hey, revenues!
Fuck them.
The remaining travel challenge is manageable by scheduling bye weeks appropriately, as the League already does, for the most part.
I’m not advocating relocation or expansion. Just saying the logistical problems can be overcome.
I think they'll do well there.
Wait until they get their first game check and see how much it's taxed in Europe.

Expansion was thrown out there but it is way more likely that teams like Jax and others move there. That shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Jax is a small city in terms of population, but NE FL is growing and as you said, the Jags future is finally looking brighter. Playing a "home" game or 2 in London was fine when the team sucked (for 10-15 yrs), but that's no longer the case.
Jax fans will come back (they supported the team just fine when they were decent, like a lot of other fanbases) and I don't think Kahn wants to move the team permanently.
I think adding 4 more teams would be a bad thing. It's already hard enough to win the superbowl, adding 4 more teams (and likely making 16 team playoffs) just makes it tougher. NFL sure would love the extra TV games though.
I'd be fine with a franchise like the Jaguars moving to London, but adding 4 new teams seems crazy.
As Bud asks in Wall Street, "When is it ever enough? How many yachts can you waterski behind?"
Since the NFL is seasonal, and the teams could train anywhere, the players wouldn't become tax-resident in the UK or Germany. The teams would likely set up shop in a tax-haven state, train there, and move to Europe for the preseason and regular season. With minimal diligence, they could probably avoid income tax liability in Europe altogether unless certain players chose to live there full-time. As I understand it, the tax situation would be much closer to US workers attending frequent meetings in Europe than ex-pats who relocate there.
Of course, the teams' business activities would be subject to VAT and other local costs.

Expanding by 4 teams doesn't make sense. You have to redo all the conferences and divisions. Relocating is more likely. The Chargers never get fans. It isn't up to me to decide but if you are asking what is more likely between expanding by 4 teams or relocating, the answer is relocating. Also, this isn't the point. The point is thay this source said either relocating or expanding and the thread title specifically only mentions expansion.
Setup a streaming service similar to the WWE network - monthly sub to access the entire NFL library.
For special seasons - add commentary tracks to the game with some of the key players/coaches
I'd eat that up during the offseason - I'd love to be able to watch 1986, or 1990, in it's entirety with commentary with the look and feel of the MNF Manning Cast.
Enthusiasm for a game here and there is much different than sustaining an enthusiastic crowd for an eight game schedule every year.
That doesn't even begin to take into account the ridiculous logistical roadblocks to this stupidity.
What you call watered down, Goodell calls parity
West Coast teams already gripe about the travel. Wait till they have to spend 10+ hours on a flight.
I'd be okay with that

and it was impressive to see the mass European enthusiasm on display. There is no doubt that there is a lust for the NFL in Europe

I met Mads there, with his Brother on a Train station, each dressed up in their favorite team colors. Mads comes to the US to watch Football games regularly and to the European games. Those folks we saw at the stadium over there were rad mad about football. You can look at this/knock it/ however you want, but I believe based on what I saw and experienced , that there is a very willing and enthusiastic audience over there

Yep, an the proverbial “ might as well put the qb in a skirt” is on its way too.

This makes a lot of sense. I would do six expansion teams, though (two in the UK, three in Germany, and one in Amsterdam.) That would make scheduling easier.
The complaining in this thread reminds me of the arguments I read about when MLB went to the West coast in the early '60's. "Flights are too long/expensive and rail takes forever!"
The NFL is waiting for a supersonic replacement for the Concord, so flights are 3-4 hours to Europe. Once that happens, things will start moving. Oh, and the NFL is watered down already in terms of talent, from previous expansion. That argument didn't stop them then, and it won't now. Money talks!
And yet the NFL Europe wasn't sustainable. Amazing
" we're rigging the game in the pass rush's favor and getting them hit like Rocky Balboa."
Umm ...this is not serious, right? Some form of sarcasm, right?
I’d hate our D having to play against RoyMbataeka(sp).

Can he play?

Does the CFL's existence somehow block the NFL's expansion into, say, Toronto and Vancouver?

Having division rivals play each other three (or even four) times a year would reduce the travel burden. I could imagine an 18-game schedule with half (or even two-thirds) of the games being in the division...

Any kind of change at all in sports is often met with howling calls of negativity. I remember listening to WFAN in the early 90s when it was announced that NBA players would be playing in the Barcelona Olympics. Good Lord, the debates and calls from supposedly grown men into that station.
This is literally taking a golden goose and killing it.
It’s a spectacle there; a curiosity that comes once in a while like a circus and is entertaining. There’s not lust for the NFL in Europe and there never will be, outside of Americans working and/or living there. Soccer will always be king and the NFL will never make a dent in that armor. Just like soccer will never be as popular here.

Are you talking about roughing the passer?
I'm talking about the fact the NCAA doesn't play the game or have the practice time with the players to teach them how to pass block, and the CBA limits it to the degree that Evan Neal has to take his excellent work ethic to an outside party to work on his technique.
Sorry if I wasn't clear.
