with Peterson between Scherzer and Verlander. Though it was planned around Verlander pitching the home opener, it might work to the Mets favor having Peterson between those two.

Should be going Sunday. Looking forward to seeing Senga's debut.
pitching matchups for the series
KDavies : 3/30/2023 10:52 am : link
tonight: Scherzer vs. Alcantara
Friday: Peterson vs. Luzardo
Saturday: Verlander vs. Cabrera
Sunday: Senga vs. Rogers

reports on Rogers this spring are good. From what I have heard a lot better than last year, except for one start he got hit hard. Mets just need to run up pitch counts on these guys and get them out early. As usual, Marlins have a questionable bullpen.

I'm not in NY anymore, are they widely distributed around the city (i.e., do you see them on tap at bars or see their cans at beer shops)?

It looks like a new place is opening up where McFadden's used to be.

Yeah. Ebbs has a tap room in Williamsburg (nice space) but their beer has pretty good distribution city wide. I was friendly with the brewery owner near my apt and he complained how they had "big money" behind them (he was completely unaware I knew who the Wilpons were). Their beer is pretty good, it's not particularly experimental "interesting" but it's very drinkable... and now award winning.

-Yeah McFadden's is being replaced by an Aramark/Mets owned space called "The K Korner", unfortunate name (and cheap looking logo(linked) but nice to have SOMETHING at the ballpark pre and post game

Clearly the least interesting in the system. Vasil, Hamel are the only top 30 prospects on that team, Young, Nunez, McIIwain, Senger and I guess Schwartz (I'm not a believer in very lower power 1b personally) would be the others of interest.

I'm not aware of the muscle that they are talking about. Hearing Verlander talk about it, it seems related to a lat? Is this just a very minor lat issue that they are hoping to prevent turning into something like Scherzer had last year?

what happens with ankle/foot injuries this year amongst pitchers and infielders. Imagine having tens of thousands of reps knowing exactly where a bag is, and now the edge or corner of the bag is not where you think it is. Maybe it won't be a big deal, but I can see a potential for injuries to tick up, particularly when having to run to the base, step on the base, and catch a baseball at the same time.

I haven't seen the Fried injury and not saying that it's at all related to this, just a random thought.

Eric on Li : 3/30/2023 3:45 pm : link
do they have to burn a call up for megill over this?

Quote:
Prior to first pitch of the Mets’ opening day game against the Marlins, the team announced that veteran starting pitcher Justin Verlander will be placed on the 15-day IL after he was diagnosed with a low-grade strain of the teres major muscle in his right shoulder.

The 40-year-old three-time Cy Young winner would be lucky to miss just the minimum 15 days, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.

The teres major muscle is supremely important to the pitching motion and the Mets are likely to be cautious with Verlander given his advanced age.

A return near the end of April would be great news for the newly acquired righty.

Verlander made 28 starts for the Astros last season, logging a career-best 1.75 ERA with an 18-4 record in 175 innings and 185 strikeouts.

He sure did. Nice win.
nice to win with 5 runs and just 1 rbi for alonso + lindor
Eric on Li : 3/30/2023 7:07 pm : link
canha and alonso were the only 2 spots in the lineup without a hit. and canha actually hit a ball 108.2 mph which was literally harder than any ball he hit last year.

canha, vogelbach, escobar, narvaez extended the lineup, combined to draw 2 walks and hit 2 singles, and even though it's just game 1 against someone like alcantara that's notable.

overall mets 12 hard hit balls to 5 for miami.
Here is a stupid crazy trade suggestion
pjcas18 : 3/30/2023 7:57 pm : link
but let's say the Angels immediately shit the bed and by June they're out of contention and likely not getting back into it.

And they know Ohtani is likely gone, and you could acquire Trout and Ohtani as a package deal.

Would you trade:

Alvarez
Baty
Vientos
Ramirez
Mauricio

5 mostly top 100-ish prospects including Alvarez who is top 5 and Baty top 35.

Would you do it (with or without time to negotiate an Ohtani extension)?
Would it be enough to get the Angels to move them both?

Why trade the moon while you can just spend 3 months later.

I think it's just Ohtani. And that's going to be interesting how that develops. If the Angels are out of it by July, there's some value in trading for him to hopefully sign and extension prior to him hitting FA.

I absolutely want them to keep Baty. And Alvarez as well, but I have to assume that the negotiations are going to start with Alvarez. Now, the Angels' #1 prospect, Logan O'Hoppe, just graduated to the bigs and he's a catcher. So if you're the Angels, one of them would have to play DH, I suppose, or get moved in a subsequent deal.

But I would trade Alvarez, Mauricio, Ramirez as a start to get Ohtani. Probably would need a little more, perhaps Vientos. But as for Baty, if they demand him in the return, I would wait until FA for Shohei.

Maybe the Mets win the WS this year with a half season of Trout and Ohtani filling the DH role and pitching every 5th day.

If the Mets stay close to the break and the Angels shit the bed it's a bold move.

no doubt it's a lot, but the Mets don't have many lineup places for Baty, Vientos or even Maurico (in the infield). Parada slots in for Alvarez.

old pitchers get hurt, sky is blue

Yeah, hard to argue with that. The Mets may be a little star crossed with injury luck, but this isn’t an example of that. It’s a very real possibility when you sign a 40-yr old pitcher.
canha, escobar, and vogey are all potentially in walk years
Eric on Li : 3/31/2023 12:45 pm : link
canha/escobar have team options but if the young guys are breaking through (and they spend 500m on ohtani) those probably get declined. narvaez has a player option too so spots will be there for the young guys when they want them.

any trade for ohtani + trout has to be considered. they are 2 of the best players in the sport, and arguably the 2 best. but very few teams can afford trout's 280m+ and extending Ohtani, and trout has a full ntc so it probably wont be the bidding war soto was. big return certainly or else they don't do it, but dont think the angels have the leverage to gut a system to that degree. tactically i think it would be simpler and they'd possibly get more by dealing them in separate trades because ohtani as a rental could have a very wide market and for trout there may only be a handful of teams he's willing to go and have interest.

you would think at this point it would be malpractice for ohtani's agent to allow him to extend before getting to a meeting with cohen but from the mets side i guess you have to view lad and some others as a threat and at least try to block someone getting the inside track on him at a rental price. and if separately trout were on the market and willing to come to nym, you'd have to also give that real consideration even if it's a big $ risk due to age/injury.

If the Mets don't at least strong-side platoon Baty at third by June 1st, I'd be really disappointed. Escobar would be a natural DH against lefties, something that this team could use, he'd probably be better in that spot over Pham.

I agree, there is zero chance Ohtani signs an extension before testing the FA market. Even if you offer him the biggest contract in FA, he’d probably get more on the open market.
