Draft coverage of Accorsi’s first pick as NYG GM

Sean : 3/30/2023 9:21 am
This was 25 years ago and he took Shaun Williams. At the time it was a great value as he was expected to be picked earlier. Good video here which notes that OL was strongly in play as well. Saw this on twitter and figured I’d share.

Also, it can’t be said enough but I really miss when the draft was all day Saturday and Sunday. It was so much better back then.

Watching the clip, I noticed that

Randy Moss was selected at #22, two picks before Williams. I had forgotten how far Moss dropped.

Moss and Rodgers are the two guys that come to mind where it ended up really backfiring on the teams that passed. But majority of the time, a guy is slipping for a reason. I remember last year everyone saying Jets got a complete steal with Jermaine Johnson. Turns out he looks to be above average at best.
I agree that the draft was better

when it was all day Saturday and Sunday. I used to have a buddy (a Chiefs fan) over on Sat. for a little draft party.

The most memorable draft Sat. for me was April 18, 1999. The Giants took Luke Petigout in the 1st rd. What made it memorable was my first marriage blew up that day (not football or draft related). It was pretty devastating at the time, but prayers were answered and it turned out to be a major blessing (fortunately, we didn't have kids and 2nd wife (and life) >>>>> 1st).

The drafts were an event when it was all weekend.

Did the draft move around a bit date-wise? I remember watching an NFL films clip from 1979 that showed Phil Simms being drafted on May 3, a Thursday.

I wasn't paying attention in 1979, but recall it was around mid April through most of the '90s.

I anticipate "celebrity" presenters Drake and Tyler Swift pushing crypto coin ads in the draft soon. To moron Goodell's credit the draft in Nashville was great.

Your priorities aren't the owners priorities, certainly. Blame the correct party in these instances.
Totally agree

on the draft being much better when it was just on Sat & Sun.....
That was an interesting draft...

...and not only from so many teams passing on Moss because he might have smoked weed.

But the top 5 players were considered absolute blue chip, sure fire pro bowlers at least. Meanwhile 3 of the 5 completely flamed out. Wadsworth because of injury more than anything, but holding out until the day before the season opener didn't help anything surely.

Count me in the camp that misses when the Draft was on the weekend.

As for Moss, I think Dallas told him-or so Moss claims-that they'd take him if he was there when they were on the clock. They obviously didn't. Then Moss on-I believe-Thanksgiving had an insane game vs. them his rookie year for like 3 TDs & 180 yards or something. Thank God Dallas didn't take Moss.
I was screaming for Faneca

He ends up in the HOF.
Shaun Williams had no instincts and no hands---deadly traits for a free safety

Did anyone hear Mort say that Acorsi told him..
DefenseWins : 3/31/2023 6:51 am : link
if Williams dropped it would be tough not to pick him?

Talk about leaks out of the Giants draft room

Ernie never met a mic he didn't like. It's what kept him in good graces with the beats all those years.
Oddly, watching those clips of Toomer in college
