The Athletic Mock today has the Giants trading up to 12

US1 Giants : 3/31/2023 7:18 pm
and selecting Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon.

Quote:
In a deal to move up 13 spots, the Giants know there’s a run on top corners coming very soon, and they swap first-rounders with Houston (plus some later picks)

That seems like a big trade up but they don't estimate the cost. What would the likely cost the Giants to move up that far? How much is Gonzalez worth over someone like Deonte Banks?

That would cost a ton
gameday555 : 3/31/2023 7:26 pm : link
Don't see that happening. I think the conversation starts closer to 20, and only if there's a CB/WR run already happening + one of the remaining options is someone we really covet.
It would cost 1st, 2nd
section125 : 3/31/2023 7:38 pm : link
and maybe their 4th. That is not happening.
not just the athletic mock but bruce feldman's annual
Eric on Li : 3/31/2023 7:39 pm : link
he's very plugged into CFB generally so he has a pretty good grasp of the players, though not as much with NFL teams (last year he had the giants drafting devin loyd).
That’s incredibly stupid
BillT : 3/31/2023 7:42 pm : link
Even for NFL draft drivel.
I'd
AcidTest : 3/31/2023 7:44 pm : link
be very surprised if that happens. The cost would be exorbitant, and would leave us with few draft picks to address other needs. We are not "one player" away.
Depends on how good Gonzáles is
Payasdaddy : 3/31/2023 7:46 pm : link
Pro bowl type player, yes
But I also think it may be a yr too early
Really depends how much more they like a particular guy.
Defense, especially if they bring in one more dline in FA, would look top ten to me
I like it ....

I'm already working on my "Fearless 2023" draft, with Gonzalez as the Round One pick. But, how much will it cost, it's gonna be expensive

This is the 2023 Draft Value Chart ...

He is THE best press corner in the draft (that includes Witherspoon). That's what Wink needs opposite Jackson.

If he is

this years version of Juice, Houston should take him.

I don't think it would happen

But if it did you could look back last year to how the Giants hierarchy reacted to Sauce being drafted in front of their pick last year.
This would not be...
Brown_Hornet : 3/31/2023 8:05 pm : link
...shocking.

Would be an awful move
Sammo85 : 3/31/2023 8:22 pm : link
Sacrificing valuable draft capital first. And picking a really overrated player to boot.
And FYI.....
John In CO : 3/31/2023 8:34 pm : link
Quentin Johnson, the TCU WR myself and many others like, went in the Giants original pick slot that they traded up out of. I know this is a mock and is completely meaningless.....but IF they stay at 25 and IF Johnson is available, id be perfectly happy with that selection there.
Id rather trade back
fish3321 : 3/31/2023 9:23 pm : link
to early round 2 and pick up and extra 3rd

They would surrender the 5th year option to trade out of the first round.
According to the value chart, there is a
kelsto811 : 3/31/2023 9:49 pm : link
480 point difference between 12 and 25, which is essentially the value of the Giants 2nd and 3rd round picks.
would you give up 25 + ezeudu + wandale to move up for sauce?
Eric on Li : 3/31/2023 11:55 pm : link
or maybe to be a little bit more realistic in outcome patrick surtain?

i dont see the nyg giving up all their day 2 picks but if gonzalez ends up on that level and they get him, it would probably be worth it.

more realistically i could see them giving up a 3rd or 4th to move up a shorter distance if joey porter or witherspoon falls to the late teens.

Simpson? Newton?

Or did you mean Sauce?
Gonzalez is the perfect fit
Dankbeerman : 4/1/2023 7:59 am : link
but getting to 12 is a big move.

If they were to do it they may chose to use next years 1 instead of this years 2. With more Cap space to play with next year and they would be betting on being a playoff team again.

A team like Texas might prefer quantity over quality

Overrated? Based on what? He’s is the best CB in the draft and the gap between him and the next group is huge.

That said, this trade isn’t happening. Gonzalez will be gone by 12 and they’d have to move into the top 10 to get him. Not happening
Off topic a bit

But does anyone know when The Athletic's 2023 full draft guide becomes available?

TIA.

Which is why we shouldn't do this.

I have no opinion on whom the Giants should draft, because I know too little about the prospects; BBI is one of the forums I use during draft season to get more informed.

On Johnson the knock I hear/read is he does not have great hands, is a body catcher and has a high percentage of drops.

Is this a concern for you?

Weird draft year so far I guess
Spiciest Memelord : 4/1/2023 11:40 am : link
not a lot of agreement, which seems to indicate there is no one to love and it might actually be better to trade down.
Houston
Toth029 : 4/1/2023 11:50 am : link
Did take Stingley last year so it would be a surprise if they went corner again. But if he meets value, why not.

Juice, Sauce! What's the difference? :-0
If you do trade up in the 1st
Spiciest Memelord : 4/1/2023 2:10 pm : link
it better be a surefire guy like Revis, Julio Jones or Devonta Smith, pointless to trade up otherwise.

I meant Gonzalez, meaning if he’s that good the Texans taking him would be a good move for them.
