Giants interest in OL McClendon Curtis of Chattanooga

Y28 : 4/1/2023 7:17 pm
Here is the latest Pro Day report from Tony Pauline. It includes several pro days from then end of the week.

The Giants coaches ran the OL drills at the Tenn-Chattanooga Pro Day.

Fans may remember that Bill Belichick shocked other NFL teams when he grabbed Cole Strange (also an OL at Tenn-Chattanooga) with his 1st round pick last year.

Rams coach Sean McVay (who had no early picks) was being interviewed live and when the Patriots selection happened, he was disappointed, saying his hope was to draft Strange with the Rams first pick (#104).

Strange had a very solid season as a starter for New England, and certainly validated where he was drafted.

I enjoy listening to the many player interviews when the 3 days of practices end at the Senior Bowl. A typical question asked is "who were the toughest guys you went against this week?"

For the DLinemen interviewed, I remember 3 of them responding to that question and mentioning Curtis. I think that's one of the best insights you can get as fan, because its honest and unfiltered from the opposing players.

The other player often mentioned as the toughest matchup in those DLinemen interviews was Cody Mauch.

Very interesting because the Giants OL coaches have now run the Pro Day drills for both Mauch and Curtis.

little interesting tidbits.

but I can't remember the Giants coaching running so many of these workouts. It's a huge advantage for the team and I hope this continues.
With Glowinski locked in as the starter for 2023...

... a developmental RG makes a lot of sense late on Day 3. At this point, Marcus McKethan is next in line; he might not be much farther along in his development than Curtis, and the ACL may hamper him this spring and summer. I have no idea what the staff thinks of Wyatt Davis or Solomon Kindley. Curtis is apparently built like Matt Peart, so there's some stuff to work with.

Any indication whether he did any center work at the Pro Day?

Can’t speak to the Pro Day, but he did not take any snaps at Center during Senior Bowl week
Curtis has an unusual asset in common with Josh Ezeudu.

Like Ezeudu, he shifted between tackle and guard mid-game his senior year. In Curtis's case he also switched sides, from LT to his previous position, RG.

Curtis will turn 24 at the start of the season. His age might compound the level-of-competition concerns. He was a full-grown man blocking low-level recruits, some of whom were still filling out.
Thanks Y28. Great info as always.

Curtis doesn't seem like the type of prospect who projects to center anyway.

Figure a year of playbook and being at mini camp and start of training camp helps Mckethen. knee surgery was august so should be close to 100% small leg up but I know Sy thought he had some holes in his game ( and some positives like massive)

Fits the profile of versitle OL, ideal 6th man potential starter

Don't forget McKethan. Schoen actually brought him up during a recent press conference, without being prompted.

It would be awesome if McKethan can beat out Glowinski for the starting RG spot.

That would not be my expectation. But it is not out of the realm of possibility that McKethan is the starting RG in 2024.
