Dallas & EDM in the Western Conference Final.
Any East predictions would be too influenced by bias (LGI!)
and Boston over NJ.
Boston wins it all.
Having said that......
Boston beats Toronto and Colorado beats Dallas.
Boston wins the cup in 6
Can't see anyone stopping Boston (barring injury of course)

I think the Leafs could take out Tampa this year, too.

FWIW, Barry Melrose said today the one team in the East that could knock off the Bruins are the Rangers. I don't think the Bruins are invincible and the Panthers are not going to lay down in this series against them, either.
West-Colorado vs Edmonton
Colorado vs Rangers
Colorado in a heartbreaker for me (7 games)
Sorry I am a Ranger fan so I am completely bias and hope we go through the Devils, Islanders, and Boston. Settle all family business this playoffs.

I am a Rangers fan that is so down on this team and I can't really understand why. They have played well over the last 60 games, but I just can't see a long run this post-season. Desperately hope I am wrong--there is nothing like a hockey run in the playoffs. Just some of the most fun you can get out of sports.

Damn, I agree but I think this team is better suited for playoff hockey. Boston is the only team that really scares me with that said it is a gauntlet to get to the finals.
Crazy that in the first 2 series, they could get to sleep in their own beds every night.
FWIW, both Brooks and Walker in the NYP have the Bs beating the Rangers in 7 in the East finals.

If the Rangers advance this year, it would be of benefit for them to not have to go 7 games every series. It eventually caught up to them vs Tampa last year. I'm a little anxious for this series vs the Devils. I don't like how the Rangers played since they clinched a playoff spot.
Hoping it's the start of a deep run.
Best playoff format of any sport.
Will be interesting to see how the Bruins fare playing a team over a 4-7 game series. Does their depth wear down the other team or do teams find weaknesses to exploit.
And yes Ulmark is the best goalie in the league this year but he doesn't have a playoff win career wise...plus he's got some injury or flu too. As does the backup Swayman.
Going to be a great playoff overall, esp in the East.
The TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS!
I know some of you are wondering how I cannot anoint the Bruins, the obvious choice….but to my recollection their goalie has never won a playoff game and has the flu….this could affect him these first two games at least. Toronto is healthy and brimming with confidence. Oh, 4 other reasons….
Matthews
Marner
Taveras
Nylander
I don’t think they have said yet, but they have a goalie named WOLL who is the next big thing. I expect Sammy to start, but if he falters, watch for the Big Woll! You heard it here first….
Go Leafs Go!
Leafs in 6
Canes in 6
Rangers in 6
Knights in 6
Oilers in 7
Avalanche in 5
Wild in 7
Heavily biased Rangers over Bruins in the ECF
Oilers over Wild in WCF
Rangers over Oilers for the Cup
It'd be cool if the Oilers won. That one guy of theirs is amazing. Playoff hockey is awesome though. Very intense.

Yep, it's awarded to the best regular season team

Agreed. It adds nothing to the broadcast. I hate when coaches/players are interviewed during the game in any sport.
2 pretty evenly matched teams imo, will hopefully be a fun series that goes the distance.

It looked more like a 4/5 matchup than it did a 2/7. Need to get 1 on Wednesday
Carolina is too strong for Isles. Isles will be competitive but lose by one goal every game. Sorry, that’s how I see it.

The Bruins were flopping around the ice like a bunch of flounders and the refs ate it up, 2 PP's in the first 5 min. Too much to overcome - especially with Lyon, who actually played great - so not pinning game 1 on him, giving up a back breaking softie on the Marchand shot.

Ullmark looked fine to me. In fact, no one was out with the flu. Bergeron was hurt in the last game of the season.

Huh? The interference call was legit and the Pastrnak trip was questionable. But Marchand was certainly high sticked in the face before all of that.........

The way I saw it, Marchand tried to sell the call and reacted less to the high stick more to the contact. None of those other two were playoff penalties IMO - or no different than plays the Bruins were making. All borderline and in the playoffs if it's borderline I try and be consistent and draw the line. IMO it was not consistent.
And McAvoy (who I'm a big fan of), accused the Panthers of diving after he cross checked someone in a scrum. For the record, I thought that was a bad call too.
For what it’s worth, after Habs beat my boys in the playoffs a few years ago, I rooted for them to go all the way. I figured if you were good enough to best my boys you deserve to win it all. You almost did….

The Leafs should beat Tampa, but as usual for them it's a tough match up they could lose. Tampa looks old and slow, but still have the key elements to winning in the playoffs, goalie, good specials, skill and grit.
Good luck, 5 bowls, I'm hoping you get a good result, but I can't root for the Leafs.
The Lightning toggled their system against NYR and neutralized them in the ECF in games 3-6. Hedman is declining and they aren't as good as they once were. Keefe might be good but Cooper and Sullivan are the best at this IMO.
Brett: I sure hope your assessment is off a bit and doesn’t materialize. Plus, I can’t stand Cooper….arrogant prick if you ask me..
when TBL is getting goals from Bellemare you know you're in for a long night. He had 4 goals in 73 regular season games.
NJD played well for long stretches - and dominated at times, but my biggest concern for them, goalie, showed up. And not to say Vanecek is why they lost (he made some good saves), when I ranked the NYR over NJD and fans asked me why since NJD had a better record it was because I believed Igor can steal a game and I was not sure if Vanecek could. Well Igor did. He was incredible. And the Rangers had all the elements of my post-season formula working - goalie (check), specials (2/3 on the PP and 4/4 on the PK), skill (check), and grit (check) (23 blocked shots - grit is not just dropping the gloves - in fact it's not dropping the gloves at all - it's working the corners, blocking shots, hits, back checking).
Both NJD and TOR have a lot of pressure to win game 2 (captain obvious?)
SEA over COL was the only real surprise for me last night and I didn't watch a second of it - COL had been red hot heading in to the playoffs.

Even before this, in some ways, the Lightning scare me more than the Bruins do. The Lightning have had the Rangers number the past few seasons.
If they lose it will take a perfect effort from the team who beats them.
Ullmark/Swayman was my last hope, but Ullmark looked great in game 1.
They played without their captain and 1C in game 1 and dominated the dots and beat a really good team. Bergeron will probably be back tonight.
Tampa is nowhere near Boston (IMO).

Talent-wise, no, but I also know that the Lightning are the ones who kicked the Rangers out of the playoffs the past few years and Vasilevskiy seems to play very well in the Playoffs against the Rangers.
NJD will push back too, that was a nervous start for them but they still have a killer roster. That series will go long imo.
In some regards it's maybe better off for TOR and NJD to get blown out than to lose a heart breaker. the embarrassment may be more of a motivator than the heart break would have been.
Most playoff teams were healthy and most of the heavily injured teams did not make the playoffs.
COL and LVG did the most with the worst situation. CAR and TOR did well too.
I'm not sure I've seen a team ever get through a season as healthy as the 2022-2023 NYR. I wonder if these stats go back far and the provider can confirm if any team has ever been this healthy.
53 man-games lost and not to "key" players.

Final NHL injury summary for the 2022/23 regular season (playoff teams highlighted)
I'm worried that Bergeron may have a concussion .
The Bruins were certainly head and shoulders above the rest of the league during the regular season , including Tampa , but playoff hockey is a whole different game .
Tampa looked deadly in game 1 vs. Toronto and they are built for and know how to win in the playoffs .
Bruins need to get Patrice back and get over the virus that has been making its way through the team .
The Bruins are awfully deep and have had a historic season but they still don't want to lose their #1 center with Tampa then either probably the Rangers or Canes on the horizon .
The Eastern Conference is loaded this year . Loving every minute of it .
Definitely suspension worthy IMO, but I thought a game.

Toronto’s Michael Bunting has been suspended for 3 playoff games for an Illegal Check to the Head and Interference against Tampa Bay’s Erik Cernak.
No Pavelski for the Stars.
Hedman may play tomorrow, Cernak out.
so disciplined - everyone knows where to be
the forecheck is crazy, the neutral zone play is where the layers shine and defensively they have about 4 players who could win the selke and one who probably will.
Not wrong but how the hell is that missed when everything is being called against the Isles?
Quote:
a high stick missed by the refs, but Mayfield can't whine about it during the play.

Tonights calls on the isles were legit so as a fan Im not pissed but even before the highstick aho gets grabbed by the head and tackled also. That was a penalty also

no idea the refs suck.
love to see the Panthers pouring it on in Boston. Still no Bergeron for Boston and Bennett back in the lineup for FLA makes a big difference.
4 times in #NHL playoff history one team has had 5+ power play opportunities while the other had 0:
2017 1st round, Game 3: CGY (5), ANA (0)
2017 2nd round, Game 2: STL (5), NSH (0)
2020 1st round, Game 5: CBJ (6), TB (0)
2022 1st round, Game 2: CAR (6), NYI (0)
not that it should matter but the only other 6-0 PP game was when tampa was up 3-1 in the series, and they still scored 5 goals and won that game 5 in ot to close out cbj, so this 6-0 seems a little more punchy. if nothing else the isles should at least get to own this record.
I don't think it's possible for anyone to dislike the Bruins more than me, but I really hoped one of the Bruins dropped Lomberg on Florida. He looked like the epitome of the "talk tough with the refs holding him back" player.
I was annoyed by him just imagining his chirps, lol.
He is squarely in selke land right now with his D, he always was, but his offense looks good too.
That said, EDM is showing they're not just McDavid and if you focus too much attention on McDavid they can beat you in other ways. Game 1 LAK was able to control McDavid and generate enough offense to win, last night they were not.
EDM and LAK even at 1 headed to LA.
CAR with an OT win to go up 2-0 on NYI headed to NY
FLA ties up BOS at 1 a piece heading to FL
DAL (my dark horse) tied up MIN at 1 heading to MN
Tonight:
NYR vs NJD, NYR lead 1 - 0
TOR vs TBL, TBL lead 1 - 0
COL vs SEA, SEA lead 1 - 0
LVG vs WIN, WIN lead 1 - 0
If Mayfield lifted the CAR players stick into his own face then no, it's not a penalty on the CAR player.
similarly if you get hit with a stick on the follow through of a shot, it's not a penalty on the player who hits the person with his stick.
otherwise, intent is irrelevant, you need to control your stick, is the rule.
Quote:
Does the fact that Mayfield literally lifts his stick up have any bearing on the no call? I know you can't be reckless with your stick, but the guy had his back to Mayfield and Mayfield lifted his stick. Just wondering if it is 100% total strict liability.

Thanks--so the referee has a legitimate basis for the no call last night? I hate the Islanders, so I was happy they lost, but their fans are really vocal that they were robbed.

I haven't watched it in slo-mo to see how the stick hit Mayfield to confirm or deny that.
the bigger problem was Mayfield ignoring the play to chirp the refs leaving his man uncovered to score the GW.
So, even if it should have been called, it didn't have to become a goal.
add that context BEFORE the canes got 6 pp's to the isles 0, including a PP in the final 5 minutes of the 3rd. which was a penalty but also every bit of a "swallow your whistles" moment as OT. and in a game where the islanders thoroughly outplayed carolina at 5v5.
re: the mayfield play specifically, this typically gets called every time if a player is this loose with their stick. whether or not mayfield helps move the stick, obviously when a player has 1 hand on a stick skating the opposite direction it is going to arc up as this one did hitting mayfield in the face. this was not a situation where both players were engaged facing each other and the player got his stick lifted into the other players face. in a game where the canes got 2 high sticks, both incidental that turned into double minors, including 1 called by a linesman after the ref missed the initial call, this is a must call.

That is a reasonable point, but it is also OT where they bend over backwards not to make a call. Just a few seconds before that, a guy on Carolina was literally tripped and they did not call it and that would be called 95% of the time in regulation.
Quote:
in game 1 they called a phantom penalty on pulock that led to a goal, the canes deserved to win that game but it was the decisive goal, and they also missed a few blatant ones on the canes. a hook on nelson during a wrap around right as he was shooting, an obvious cross check on burns. it happens though, overall penalties were 4-4, like is said canes outplayed them, but still a bad whistle game.

there were a bunch of those both ways but even in the regular season when things are called tighter trips, interference, holding are more 50/50 calls.
high sticking is usually a more black/white call. either it happened or it didn't. the canes got 2 high sticking majors and a tripping call with 5 minutes left in the 3rd.
And the officials have not called about 4 blatant calls on Carolina but are calling everything on the Isles.

Fucking clowns. As usual the referee on tv takes the refs/replays back.
Get rid of replay. Now.
LVG @ WIN, series tied 1-1
TOR @ TBL, series tied 1-1
NJD @ NYR, NYR lead series 2-0
COL @ SEA, series tied 1-1
In other playoff news, Teuvo Teravainen broke his hand and will miss the rest of the series (at least - should CAR move on). Big loss, secondary scoring is a difference maker in the playoffs and already down Svechnikov, CAR was relying on Teravainen.
Its refreshing. I found it infuriating watching them figure skate in the playoffs the last few years, flying the zone, cheating for offense, waiting for teammates to do the grunt work.
Lol at Nurse though. That OT play is him in a nutshell. Trying to do way too much.
they lost Josh Morrisey during the game and Neil Pionk has been forced to play almost 40 minutes out of the 80 played so far.
Yeah losing a 76 point Norris candidate is a death blow. Knee on knee.
looked like he collapsed after trying to skate off after a hard hit.
love they're showing some faith in the kid.
he lost the draw cleanly, but I still like the confidence.
what a great game.
I doubt we see Point again though.
you lose a face off in your zone, bad things can happen
all three games so far today have gone to OT.
and in the 4th game the Avs and Kraken are tied at 1 (it's early though)
Sorry. Had to cut off the "lecture team" before they got here.
SEA is a fun team to watch for year 2 - them and Vegas seemed to have cracked the expansion code far easier than their predecessors. Has the pendulum swung too far toward helping these teams? I'm not saying the league should expand any more, 32 teams might even be too many, but I expect franchise teams should struggle initially - which should be ok for the league since in the early years it's a novelty - people will go anyway regardless of record.
Or did we just get some shrewd GMs?
mid-afternoon (3:30pm) in FLA, with another pivotal game 4, FLA vs BOS. BOS leading the series 2 - 1.
Dinner theater in MIN (6:30pm) and same theme, pivotal game 4, MIN vs DAL. MIN leading the series 2 - 1.
Night cap in LA (9pm) and to finish the theme, pivotal game 4, LAK vs EDM. LAK leading the series 2 - 1.
I call game 4 pivotal because either a team is going up 3 to 1 and a comeback becomes a longshot or it's tied 2 - 2 and anyone's series.
I think the locals probably feel the same way - I went to a game in Vegas and I thought MTL put on a good, entertaining show, but they have nothing on Vegas. It's a fun crowd and I don't expect that to change too much if the team is bad.
the mecca. MTL, the Bell Center doesn't have the "charm" of the old forum, but it's a great place to see a game. and MTL is fun.
Vegas 100% should be on your list.
Nashville is an awesome time.
Boston is great for a game. good crowd, lots to do around the arena.
I have never been to a game in Raleigh, but I did go to Raleigh for work recently and I feel like I could live down there. What a nice city. I stayed in Cary, NC and I was blown away how easy it was to commute to Raleigh (the airport) and even the city, and the community was beautiful.
So, CAR is on my list to go to.
I'd also like to see games in Denver, Minnesota, and Seattle - but I haven't yet.
I have never had a bad time at a hockey game, but lower on my list of "must see" arenas would be Toronto, Pittsburgh, Chicago, San Jose, Tampa - of the arenas I have been to - good times, but nothing special.
I like the arena better than Newark and the Panthers. The Panthers are great to see because you get great seats for nothing.
Oh yeah and I've been to Carolina for Giants/Panthers.
I was going to go to Pittsburgh or Buffalo for hockey as well this year but couldn't make it.
I always felt like Panarin's best trait is passing, but he has a sick wrist shot, and I feel like he's just not good with it in motion vs the set up. I think it's fixable if someone wants to work with him on it. I wonder what he's like in his career on breakaways - to know if this year is an anomaly.
Uphill climb, not watching the game, but hope they at least make it interesting.
The officiating in most games has been really inconsistent imo.
3 - 2 Bruins, with 13 left in the 3rd
He looks pretty shaky.
Taylor Hall playing like a Hart winner.
Barkov nowhere to be found. In fact if I didn't know he was on Florida I wouldn't even know he was playing in this game.
Tkachuk and Bennett the only Panthers noticeable at all. Other than Bobrovsky who is noticeable for the wrong reasons.
Oettinger was amazing.
LATE NIGHT WILDNESS
Great game though.
LAK are a good team. I don't get to see them much.
Tonights games:
a bunch of pivotal Game 4's:
NJD @ NYR 7pm (NYR lead 2-1)
TOR @ TBL 7:30pm (TOR lead 2-1)
LVG @ WIN 9:30pm (LVG lead 2-1)
COL @ sEA 10:00pm (COL lead 2-1)

Sunday marked the second consecutive day and third time this postseason that all four road teams won (also April 18) – the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs is the first to feature three or more such days in a single postseason.
On that front, they have two days off before game 5 (Celtics conflict?) and word is Bergeron is likely to return. Krejci still out.
Their depth is better than I thought, though.
FLA better hope Spencer Knight gets his personal demons straightened out or they're forked.
No Svechnikov, Teräväinen, and Pacioretty (though losing patches helped with LTIR and was predictable) and they're still getting secondary scoring.
I watched that video a couple of times and am not nearly as convinced as other Ranger fans about his intentions.
I'll add, I've seen videos of myself (at slower speeds and less skill of course) look to be doing something intentionally dirty when I know my intentions were clean (and vice versa).
Quote:
because no sense stirring up a hornets nest, but I do think it's kind of comical that all of a sudden Rangers fans feel like players have complete control of their bodies and how they fall, where they land, and 100% know intent of the player, but Chris Kreider crashing into goalies is just incidental.

I have no idea about the fall, but I do think the roughing call on Shesterkin was a joke.

lol, yeah when I watch videos of our team I'm always amazed at how slow we look. I blame the technology. Before Live Barn it was private, lol, now unfortunately our games get broadcast to the "fans" and are archived.
I think players can do some things to adjust/influence how they fall or land (like I think even Kreider probably could have at his rate of speed on the Price play), but I will never pretend to know intent and I'm also not going to conveniently pretend to know based on the teams impacted by the play.

MIN @ DAL in game 5 of a tied series @8pm
LAK @ EDM in game 5 of a tied series @9:30pm
I don't really understand running the goalie rules. It wasn't intentional, but I thought for sure it should have been called.
Didn't impact the game because NYR was never scoring on the power play.

Do you think the Kreider play on Price was a penalty?
Yeah, I think so. Especially real-time. Replay makes me think he was tripped a little but I probably still would have called it.
Yeah, I think so. Especially real-time. Replay makes me think he was tripped a little but I probably still would have called it.
I'm not sure. I view the two plays as similar. I think Kreider had more time to adjust his landing spot. Hischier was bang bang in the crease.
I don't think either play was intentional (at least not to injure) though I always thought having played the game so long, and been at high speeds (relatively speaking) and I felt like to an extent I could control where my body went while falling, and Kreider picked a soft landing spot. IOW, he could have done more to avoid Price. IMO.
Hischier only choice was to not go to the net and he was receiving a pass, so he basically did the same thing as Kreider, but with less room to adjust so once he got in the paint there was no other outcome.
I don't know if either is a penalty, defenders had their sticks in the vicinity of the players so fans of the players will probably point to that as the cause for the outcome, but IMO if one is a penalty, they both are.
So I figure it was either because Hischier stayed down at fist and it defused the situation a little or they knew he was driving to the net and it's a hockey play.
Not sure. That is a play I'd love to get the players honest thoughts on, I wonder if the beat writers will ask anyone.

Colorado’s Cale Makar has been suspended for one playoff game for Interference against Seattle’s Jared McCann.
Blast from the point hits Sebastian Aho square in the face and Brock Nelson swats it in to the net out of mid-air directly from Aho's face.
NYI up 2 - 0
I like them in the West.
EDM also winning a crucial game 4, to go up 3 - 2.
If so, it's an awesome series for a Habs fan like me because one of them is automatically eliminated.
If BOS gets Bergeron back (and Krejci at some point) I don't see TOR winning that series. TOR hasn't won a playoff series in almost two decades, I don't see them winning more than one this year (if they beat TBL)
Didn't Toronto blow it a couple of times against Boston in recent playoff history?
"They'll win tonight"
Didn't Toronto blow it a couple of times against Boston in recent playoff history?
they had an epic meltdown (the others IMO were just average series losses) and not that recent (2013), but the Leafs were up in game 7 vs the Bruins by 3 goals halfway through the 3rd period. Two goals by BOS with the net empty in the last 90 seconds tied it. Bruins won in OT.
and the Leafs lost the game and obviously the series.
I think the Islanders make a comeback and win that series lol
I remember it like it was yesterday. I had a beer league game (in metro Boston) and my teammates are all Bruins fans for the most part so a couple people had their phones on the bench and were getting updates and the ref was telling us game stuff on the ice during face offs, etc. almost no one was paying attention to our game (the people playing in it or the refs, lol). it was annoying.
Almost every NHL 1st Rd series every year has one point in the series where they have the extra day off. It's probably a balancing the schedule kind of thing. For this series it's between games 4 & 5.
"They'll win tonight"
YEAH! That was a nice goal
I thought starting Bobrovsky was a mistake (I was wrong).
Btw, I think Ekblad is really unimpressive.
Panthers were outplayed in every facet, except 1, the one that counts, the scoreboard.
that play by Makar was almost Dale Hunter bad.

Yeah, he said he was not aware the puck was not still in play.
BS, IMO.
In the regular season their leading scorer may have only had 70 points, but they had 18 skaters with over 20 points.
NJD had 16, CAR had 15, EDM had 15, BOS had 14, DAL 13, NYR 13, LVG 12, COL 12, I didn't check anymore
and in the playoffs so far they have had 13 different goal scorers in 5 games (per Nathan Grav on twitter)
that is some secondary scoring for you. It's so much harder to stop a team when every line can score.
Yeah, he said he was not aware the puck was not still in play.
BS, IMO.
Ha ha yeah that is comical. There is no way on earth he couldn't see the puck had been released long before. Even if he hadn't seen the puck shot, since when is it normal practice to ride a guy from 20 feet up the slot all the way to the back boards? Just a mind numbingly stupid play that cost him playing in the biggest game of the season to date.

Swap Kane and Tarasenko and move Panarin to the 3rd line and Lafreniere up
So I think it will be:
Kreider Mika Tarasenko
Lafreniere Trocheck Kane
Panarin Chytil Kakko
I don't think the 4th line or the D changed at all
Basically Gallant said Ruff outsmarted him, lol - in different words.

I don't know, a few years ago, but one of the stat-heads came out with a report that in a 2 goal game you should pull your goalie with like 7 min left. and a one goal lead in the 3-4 minute range.
and teams follow that (or something like it) - Rand Pecknold did it in the Frozen Four last year vs Michigan and it didn't work out and he took a lot of heat for it, but this year he wins a national title.

I think they had to replace Ullmark because I believe he's injured, but Swayman hasn't started in 17 days (I think I heard that).
Bobrovsky has been awful too but there Panthers have no other options.

No suspension. 2 min minor.
Cogliano has a broken vertebrae.
That was a 100% dirty play, even if Eberle doesn't have a dirty history.

Mostly agree...but he never even saw that last one
Tkachuk, Bennett, Reinhart, Montour, even Verhaeghe stood out more than Barkov. If he catches fire things could change, but IMO Maple Leafs will be heavy favorites.

He had a nice save on the one-timer too.
Tkachuk screened him, and Verhaege wired that - he had no chance on that goal. Carlo (?) needs to move Tkachuk out of the way or block the shot. More importantly though unless I'm missing one, the Bruins didn't even have a scoring chance the final 5+ of the 3rd or at all in OT. That game is not on Swayman even a little.
they have a lot of UFA's but still a good core.

Patrice Bergeron told the media that he has a herniated disc in his back. He will take some time and discuss his future with his family before making a decision on whether he will play next season.
Maybe Jack Hughes has something to say about that tomorrow night (or Jason Robertson - who gets no respect playing in Dallas)
Have to say I wish there is an Olympics soon that the NHL participates in because the US talent is at it's best IMO.

NJD vs NYR game 7 @8pm
I like the Rangers in this on the money line, simply because Igor has done what I thought he'd do and elevated his game to playoff Igor. You can't help but get the stats thrown in your face, I think it's 22 (?) consecutive playoff games he has allowed 3 goals or less. I don't pin the game 6 loss on Schmid anymore than I pinned 1 and 2 on Vanecek, but Igor is a difference maker.
I think Igor won 2 game 7's last year and most of the Devils have never even played in one AFAIK. That can also make a difference.
They were up 3 games to none vs the Flyers and blew that series. Making it worse, they were up 3-0 in game 7. One of the biggest chokes in NHL history. Maybe the biggest?
The Bruins were actually up 3 games to 1 vs Toronto in 2013 before losing the next two but everyone remembers that for the ridiculous choke job for the Leafs blowing the 4-1 lead late in that game. One of the bigger single game chokes in recent NHL history.
And now last night, the Bruins blow a late lead and give it away in OT and the team with the most wins in NHL history fails to get out of round 1 despite having a 3-1 series lead.
When the Bruins were up 3 - 0 in that game my buddies and I went nuts at the bar, way over-extended ourselves, partied like rock stars and then watched it all come crashing down.
it was glorious (to this habs fan).

You do know this series is being billed as the two best American players playing against each other, right?
Matthews vs Tkachuk
As I mentioned before you could argue Jack Hughes or Jason Robertson, or a few others, but certainly a strong case could be made for Matthews and Tkachuk - and they also happen to be their teams respective best players.
Conference Semi-Finals start tonight the matchups:
EAST
TOR vs FLA (starts tonight at 7pm)
CAR vs NJD (starts tomorrow at 7pm)
WEST
LVG vs EDM (starts tomorrow at 9:30)
DAL vs SEA (starts tonight at 9:30)
my new favorite (always a dark horse for me) is DAL. Yes, I'm disrespecting LVG (still) and SEA, but DAL has all the ingredients to win a title IMO.
Seems like Bobrovsky has found the fountain of youth. he's playing well. For now.
2nd goal off a Maple Leaf in front (Knies)
Knies comes right back and answers to make it 2-1
TOR ties it on the Bunting goal but then Verhaege get is back - 3-2 FLA.

no challenge. 4-2 FLA with 7:22 left.
DAL vs SEA puck drop now. Pavelski in.
SEA scored 1st in all 7 playoff games they've played in their franchise history.
Pavelski then tips it high slot into the net for his 2nd of the game, DAL up 2-1
Hughes, Kopitar, Point named Lady Byng Trophy finalists
3-2 SEA.
Pavelski was great, set a record for oldest player in NHL history with 4 goals in a playoff game.
I brought him up that way to someone on here and they said no way HOFer. He is a 1-time AS with no cups.
he has a strange career.
1000+ games, 1000+ points
accumulator? or dominant?
his best offensive season was at 37 years old
I love his game, but I think some people voting for the HOF won't consider him in totality, but will look at stats and he won't get in.

Oh wow I didn't realize he only made 1 ASG. Maybe I was wrong about the HOF then. He has had his best years the older he has gotten. Did captain the US team too. We'll see. The HOF voters in hockey are weird. Somehow Roberto Luongo is a HOF'er and Patrick Elias isn't.
Or when morons with the last name Fox do not know how to play a puck properly in their own zone on the PP.
I'm going to go with Edmonton vs Florida for the whole thing.
Seems like a weak-ish year, I'd go Beniers, I like his game. Not just offensively, but defensively he plays beyond his years.
Skinner is 24, I know it's not like Matsui-aged for a rookie and it's probably even young for goalies these days, but the other two are 20 years olds making their seasons more impressive.
He looks like he's on turbo. Or in today's terms has a "cheat code"
McDavid set up Draisaitl on the PP, then vegas answers.
1-1
but they are fun to watch.
Draisaitl with the intentional off the back of the goalie's head goal with 10 seconds left in the 1st, makes it a 3-2 Vegas lead.
but they are fun to watch.

Basically all of these teams are "fun" to watch when you're not watching the Rangers fuck things up
If EDM gets bounced I hope McDavid demands a trade.
I wouldn't even know what that trade would look like. I guess maybe something like Gretzky to LA (3 1sts and 2 prospects (and cash)). Gretzky was a couple years older, but also more dominant (statistically and in terms of rings).
The thing about McDavid isn't just his speed, which is phenomenal itself, but that he can do all the amazing things he can do at top speed. He doesn't slow down at all when he's handling the puck, making passes, shooting, etc.
Yeah that's fair. I probably was a little over zealous calling him a hall of famer. He's probably one of those guys who's leadership intangibles outweigh his #'s. The problem with that is he's never won a cup. If he were to lead Dallas to one this year maybe it makes a better case for him.
Marleau is another guy like Pavelski who is very likely not a HOFer.
Jumbo Joe probably will be eventually.

I always used to bet against SJ because I knew they couldn't do it lol
NHL playoff ratings have been really good so far, but it'll be interesting to see how they hold up if something like Carolina/Florida was the eastern final.
He will get in and should but I think the accumulator label is kind of warranted from a stat standpoint. He is 12th all time in points and 7th all time in assists.
but in 24 (holy shit that's a lot) seasons he had one great year - 2005-2006 the year he was traded from BOS to SJS. He won Hart and Ross.
Otherwise, 4 AS appearances and no other awards and no rings.

So who is this big winner replacement? Guys like Panarin and Mika no-show in the playoffs and they make dumbass trades for big name over the hill dudes and ... they don't do shit. As always.
The best player on the ice for the Rangers is the goalie whose "men" in front of him score 0 goals in game 7 playoff games. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
I also think EDM ties it up, but I have been disrespecting LVG all year, so I'm probably wrong.
this is one of those years the ping pong ball can be franchise altering.
Not like a Slafkovsky or Lafreniere draft, some scouts say Bedard is the best prospect since Gretzky.
I thought since McDavid, but it doesn't matter much IMO when you're deciding between Gretzky and McDavid. lol.
Odds for the top pick are below. But I should also say this is the best draft in a generation too. Adam Fantilli (consensus #2) is probably a better #1 than most years and Matvei Michkov is the best Russian prospect since Ovechkin. Add in high end talent like Will Smith, Leo Carlsson, and others, and there is a legit top 15 or so of this draft who can be stars.

The all-time NHL record for goals in a single playoff is 19.
this is game 2 of the 2nd round.
Two people.
Jari Kurri (84-85)
Reggie Leach (75-76)
If I didn't see it on a graphic I never would have guessed Reggie Leach if I had a million guesses. But he did have 61 goals in the regular season that year on one of those Broad Street Bullies teams. He did it in 16 games.
Kurri would have been one of my first guesses, he lead all those Gretzky Oilers teams in playoff goals. He did it in 18 games.
In recent history, the closest is Sakic in 1996, he had 18 but did that in 22 games.
Interesting tidbit Leach won Conn Smythe when he had 19 goals, but PHI lost the cup to MTL.
I think it's the only Conn Smythe winner for the losing team.

Yes, and Kariya got up off the mat and scored a goal. He has no recollection of it.
Kariya is still messed up from concussions. He had 6 documented concussions, and probably a lot more un-diagnosed.
it's why he retired. He was 35 so age obviously played into it, but he wasn't right physically or mentally anymore and not due to age.
fun game, but once NJD was up by 3 it was defense optional (on both sides)
The definition of insult to injury
But I thought the NHL always favors big market teams?
not enough OT's or even close games it seems.
Amazing….not one penalty against Florida. That Sam McCauley ref has some bad history with the Leafs…..but not making excuses, we lost……oh well…..just bringing this up to hear your thoughts….
not enough OT's or even close games it seems.
Yep I agree. Just look at the Devils. They've played 10 playoff games, and I believe 8 of them have been at least a 3 goal lead with 10 minutes to play. A lot of bad goaltending so far. Goalies getting yanked and the Panthers run has probably been the biggest story of the playoffs.

Like Chris Rooney with MTL. I think the officiating has been mostly ok, I have the benefit of watching the games with no bias - which is much less stressful, lol - so I think some things are missed each game, but usually both ways.
I thought there was some awful calls against CAR yesterday (and a couple against NJD). For example I never see the reverse hit called as interference. Technically it is, but it's never called. While down 5-4 yesterday, CAR got an interference penalty due to a reverse hit. Brind'amour went nuts, rightfully so.
Brossoit just injured, looked like a groin or hamstring.
Adin Hill in.
No Jonathan Quick. kind of surprised Quick isn't the backup.

Just 90 minutes after winning the NHL Draft lottery last night, the Chicago Blackhawks had already sold 500 season ticket packages — worth $2.5 million.

The NHL was probably doing cartwheels when that Chicago ball came up. Anaheim would have been fine, but in the stratosphere of LA he wouldn't have had the impact he'll have in Chicago. Its a great hockey town and a huge TV market. Instantly the Hawks will be back on ABC for national games probably 3 or 4 times next season. A big playoff game for Hockey or basketball at the old Chicago Stadium was one of the best atmospheres throughout sports history.
I don't mean to seem contradictory, McDavid has been franchise altering for EDM and Bedard will be too for CHI, but what does it mean? Without McDavid EDM is not making the playoffs, but even with McDavid they have not done well in the playoffs.
And CHI has no Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins, they don't even have a Zach Hyman or Evander Kane.
CHI is almost completely devoid of talent IMO.
They don't even really have good prospects and they have Seth Jones on a really bad contract IMO.
I do think they have a lot of cap room and if they were smart and patient they *would not* go out and sign a bunch of free agents, but they'd use that cap room to acquire premium draft picks and young players.
CHI is the team who dealt Panarin and Teravainen in an attempt to build a winner, may as well be the beneficiary of some other team's impetuousness.
Just need to be patient.
I think Bedard and Hughes are similar prospects. Bedard doesn't skate quite as well as McDavid and maybe not quite Hughes either (close), but Bedard plays a physical 5' 10" or whatever he's listed at and Bedard's shot might even be better than Hughes and McDavid. Bedard uses shot angles like Matthews does. I don't know I've seen more release points from anyone.
And don't forget two years before Jack the Devils got Hischier #1 overall and since have had #7, #4, and #2 overall to add to their prospect pool - not even counting any later draft picks.
CHI closest thing was Kirby Dach (and they traded him to MTL basically for Frankie Nazar).
Only the latest draft did CHI have meaningful draft picks (Korchinski and Nazar who I like), maybe Lukas Reichel from a couple years ago otherwise the cupboard is barren IMO.
So basically from a roster building standpoint - CHI is well behind EDM when they added McDavid and well behind NJD when they added Hughes.
A lot of pressure on Bedard.
What is a cartilage transplant? is that like a torn ACL or worse? Sounds worse. You don't get a lot of soft tissue or knee injuries in hockey compared to football or baseball (soft tissue).

Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog will undergo a cartilage transplant in his right knee on May 10. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Brian Cole at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. The 30-year-old forward is expected to miss the entire 2023-24 season.
I like Will Smith the most, but I think he's going #3 and then I like Leo Carlsson and 3rd I like Matvei Michkov because who knows how long he'll be in Russia.
Smith and Carlsson are good sized centers. Carlsson bigger, but Smith is 6-feet.
Michkov is a wing, but so slick and talented, if not for the uncertainty with Russian players he'd easily go #3 IMO.
If the Habs need to pick one of the next players it could be any of Zach Benson (W), Ryan Leonard (C), I love Sandin-Pellikka (D) game other than his size, but I could take him at 5 depending on who else is there, Dalibor Dvorsky (C), David Reinbacher (D) - this is a deep draft.
Best case FLA pick would have been at 17, but now I'd look to trade it for a player and MTL can speed up the rebuild (with some health this year)
tough one. I don't think so.
I think Suzuki is a legit 1C, he's not Bedard good, and Guhle is a top 4 D and Smith/Michkov/Carlsson are likely top 6 players.
I'd probably do it without Suzuki though. Two firsts and Guhle - which is kind of like 3 1sts since Guhle was a 1st.
and Maybe add in another piece like the rights to Monahan.
Maybe if Suzuki was 30 and not 23 I'd feel differently.
What do you think the Leafs do this offseason 5bowls if TOR loses tomorrow?
10 UFA's (not many core players) and 1 RFA (Samsonov)
Muzzin probably not on LTIR next year (right?)
so not a ton of cap space either (~$18M?) without Muzzin, ~$12M with him.
And the Leafs do have a 1st round pick (late 1st) but no 2nd, 3rd or 4th and no 2nd next year and possibly no 1st in 2025.
This has been a dull edition of the NHL playoffs!
I almost don't even care who wins the cup at this point.
Once TOR gets bounced, I do hate CAR but not as much as BOS or TOR, so won't care really who wins.
Zibanejad, Panarin Kakko and those other no show dorks may have just lowered the bar. Put your head down.
I have learned to grow as a human being.
but we must have or be approaching a record for goalies chased in a playoffs.
both starting losing goalies last night were chased.
Possible handshakes tonight in one game and a crucial game 4 in the other.
TOR @FLA @7PM, Panthers up 3-0, Woll in net for TOR
LVG @EDM @10PM, LVG up 2-1
I have no problem with Devils games being noncompetitive, though
A lot can change even over the next few days, but CAR is the cup favorite at the moment IMO.
I'm going with "being right"
Not sure how those from the broadcast booth to the front office changes work out. Jones has been an analyst for 20+ years.
I do think PHI should tear it down as much as they can. So many immovable albatross contracts IMO. Hayes, Provorov, Couturier, Atkinson, Konecny, and maybe more - no guarantee Couturier actually plays again.
I'd even trade their young players like Cam York (who I like) Joel Farabee, Owen Tippett, etc. - I don't know that there is an untouchable player on their roster.
2 more years at $5.5M
Good player, just so injured....

If you're NJD getting a OT goal to keep your team alive is special too. Less special, but still...
But yo check this out they eliminated the Rangers

Whatever. Another ex-Ranger who thrives once he leaves here.
Fast has had the exact same seasons in CAR he had in NY.
In some ways better in NY.
Anyway, big kudos to the Dallas Stars for jumping ahead in their series. Thought that they were done and it was not looking good.
Oh, baby. Can the Toronto Maple leafs go on a magical run? Big one tonight between Edmonton vs Vegas.
I think Florida ends the series tonight and Edmonton jumps ahead. Let's go. The dream ECF I always wanted: Carolina vs Florida.
I don't quite see it that way, 38 year old Brent Burns, Gostisbehere, Brett Pesce, those are not sturdy defensive defenseman, those are offensive defenseman. Their main difference IMO is their D constantly activate make it seem like their forecheck has 3 or 4 players constantly involved.
And their forwards come back (all the way) down low with the same vigor as they forecheck with. I said in the beginning of the playoffs Kotkaniemi has become a beast defensively and I didn't even know the half of it - he may not put up 100 point seasons (who knows), but he is playing an incredible 2C - eventually Selke level IMO and he hits everything in sight and he's scoring big goals and making big plays.
I actually see these two teams as a lot alike with maybe CAR getting better goaltending and a year or two later in their development.
I remember the play, I kind of viewed it as Meier with the cage struggling with the puck a little, seemed to be fighting it all series.
Burns is a massive dude, he's like an NFL TE. He can hit and play physical and he used to, he just doesn't anymore.
He had 40 hits all year and played 82 games - he's just not a physical player. I think that play was just opportunistic not stylistic.
either way, not a huge deal.
I may agree with that to an extent, but nothing like pinning a series loss on two people. (I did not read past the headline).
Two games tonight, one possible handshake.
TOR vs FLA @7pm FLA leads 3-1 (Woll in net again for TOR)

Hockey really needs an "alternate view" camera or something. So fucking annoying when there is a crucial moment at the end of the game and hands are blocking the puck.
I forgot about that. I hate feel good stories lol

What Brett said.
Also, seemed like he was more concerned with trying to match Tkachuk physically. And that is not Matthews game. He's big, but he's not Lemieux big and he doesn't play that way, so I think that took him off his offensive game a little. He played well other than on the scoresheet.
and overall, 11 points in 11 playoff games isn't a no-show.
Tavares is the real dog there IMO.

It worked out for NJD I guess, just wouldn't make me confident.
Pavelski with the chest high tip to cut the lead to 2 (being reviewed for a high stick).
other than Matt Beniers, who is way better than I thought he would be this soon, and IMO a better prospect than Owen Power. Side note: the talent Michigan is sending to the NHL is incredible, but it also shines a light on some of the prospect issues we see - Michigan hasn't exactly dominated the NCAA and they are littered with high 1st/early round picks recently:
Nazar (#13 overall '22)
McGroarty (#14 overall '22)
Casey (#46 overall '22)
Power (#1 overall '21)
Beniers (#2 overall '21)
Hughes (#4 overall '21)
Johnson (#5 overall '21)
Samoskevich (#24 overall '21)
Duke (#126 overall '21)
that '21 draft is insane for Michigan
Brisson (#29 overall '20 draft)
Bordeleau (#38 overall '20 draft)
I can go back more but basically I'd be switching Michigan teams - in fact a lot of these guys never played together since some went to the NHL after their freshman years.
Back to SEA they basically did what LVG did and have what I call 4 3rd lines, but in SEA case maybe 1 2nd line and 3 3rds. and really good D. Point is, no stars just blue collar players, and I guess it works since Vegas had success with it and now Seattle does too.
From a not-a-fan-of-the-team standpoint, it can be boring hockey.
Seriously. What were they thinking?
Ovi did it in almost 30 less games.
Crosby with the points lead by a lot (20) - with 201
Crosby is a couple years younger than both Ovi and Pavelski so he could wind up taking it back if the Pens can right the ship.
Kucherov (53 goals, 160 points) is really the only other active player threat. Maybe Pastrnak (35 goals and 79 points at his age)
for those who care about these kinds of things.
Pens should trade Crosby.
Pens should trade Crosby.
We were just discussing him as a HOFer or not and his stats say no, but maybe his playoff performance helps. Still a no from me, but closer.
He needs a ring, IMO.
And one thing should also be clarified is it's the hockey hall of fame, not NHL HOF and he was on the US silver medal Olympic team, no prizes for 2nd place (well other than the silver medal) but that is the team who tied up the gold medal game in the final seconds (to lose in OT to Crosby/Canada).
Still a no from me, but I often overlook international play when I evaluate HOF or not.
Nick Bonino had 2 goals.
Rocco Grimaldi had 3 points (1G/2A)
Cutter Gauthier had a goal
Lane Hutson had an assist
Luke Tuch had a goal.
Group A probably comes down to USA and Sweden, if they win the games they should.
USA has Germany (tomorrow 5/15), Austria (5/17), Denmark (5/20) France (5/21) then Sweden (5/23) to wrap up group play.
Sweden has (notable names)
Patrik Nemeth (ARI)
Par Lindholm (ex-NHLer)
Leo Carlsson ('23 draft eligible)
Lucas Raymond (DET)
Jesper Wallstedt (MIN)
Jakob Silfverberg (ANA)
Rasmus Sandin (WAS)
Alex Nylander (PIT)
and as teams get eliminated from the NHL playoffs, sometimes they join the worlds.
Except they won five championships? The canucks are probably the closest equivalent.
Then they wind up losing in the second round. I guess the 2023 Boston Bruins would be "over hyped team" personified.
See: Tony Romo/Dak Dallas Cowboys
👍
They are a very flawed team and IMO why Ken Holland (GM) and Jay Woodcroft (to a lesser extent) should be on the hot seat.
I don't believe Connor McDavid is the type to do it publicly but he has to be close to requesting a trade I would believe.
Probably wins another Hart this year, and it would be 3 in his first 8 years of playing putting on par with Gretzky and Orr.
And you could say some of the lack of team success is on him, but his production does not indicate that. It's on their D, goalie, system, etc more than him.
I hope he requests and is granted a trade.
I think most sites had Vegas as the favorite in the West.
they were in first place basically wire to wire.
But no one stood out after that. Maybe COL.
EDM could equal BUF if EDM made it to the finals regularly and lost.
They went to one conference final in the McDavid era, last year (and were swept by COL who was favored IIRC).
Prior to last year EDM hadn't even won a playoff series since 2016-2017, in fact they had only even won 1 playoff game since 2016-2017 before last year (in the McDavid era)
lol, oh. Ok, I can see that.
SEA @DAL
DAL goalie, Jake Oettinger who was Tim Thomas-esque last year in the playoffs, has not been as good this year, and was yanked last game (in his shortest career outing) how will he bounce back?
Dallas has such a talent advantage, this series really shows how effort > talent in hockey, especially if you have a leaky goalie. And the goalie leakage is tied to poor D and lack of engagement physically.
Hoping for a good game where both goalies make it until one is pulled for an extra attacker to tie it (which happens in dramatic fashion) and then we get OT. Is that asking too much?

6. Mark Stone (LVG)
7. Sergei Bobrovsky (FLA)
8. Carter Vehaeghe (FLA)
9. Phillipp Grubauer SEA)
10. Yanni Gourde (SEA)
You can eliminate all the DAL and SEA players for whichever team loses
I do think someone from CAR can sneak in, but Freddy has been great, someone like Burns or Aho maybe.
I see youth hockey teams and leagues in Arizona, St. Louis, Florida, Dallas, Raleigh/Charlotte, etc. and the way those communities grow the game is with identification and participation from local stars.
Canadians are going to play hockey. It's probably saturated, just like MIN, DET, CHI, BOS, NYR/NJD/NYI, PIT, PHI, etc. so the new fans are likely coming from those undeserving fan bases.
So, if MTL is out, I don't care who wins and honestly I hate seeing other teams take a lap with Lord Stanley, but I will feel less hate of one of these teams. Except CAR, I hate them almost as much as BOS and TOR.
I wouldn't mind see Tkachuk win a cup. he is one of my favorite players to watch.

I was discussing the Jets the other day. I know it would never happen but I would love to land Hellebuyck and Ehlers. You never know, unless he owns one already Canada has a law that non Canadians can't buy homes in Canada (with some exceptions I'm not sure either Connor or Hellebuyck meet - they are both American). I know Cole Caufield can't buy a home there. Through 2024, so the timing may work out.
I think that may have contributed to Tkachuk looking to get out of Calgary.

It’s been hard for Canadian teams to sign free agents due to high taxes, cost of living etc. Yesterday Canada banned home sales to all foreigners for 2 yrs including US Citizens. Can you imagine signing a contract & not be allowed to buy a home for your family? Ridiculous...

Who cares they'll trade that for Wayne Gretzky
they may trade it. I would if I were the Rangers.
because they can win now with players ready now, so it makes sense to trade the pick and this is the year to do it.
Scoring a goal in a Game 7?
And lose all of this? I'm just joshing they'd make a trade for an older guy with that pick.
A center, a wing, and a D.
Not saying it will be easy to add them but I think it's possible and some players may need to be traded. But I'm also not saying something outrageous like the C, W and D are McDavid, Ovie and Makar.
the center is a 2C/3C, the wing is a top 6 RW and the D is a top 4 D.

I can see Ovechkin being a Ranger in the final year of his career lol
Also are you saying that the Rangers upgrade over what they got now or to add this guys and play with exactly who they got now?
But i was not suggesting the Rangers acquire him.
I was saying add to the core (a C, W, and D), but maybe they'd have to deal a player to make it work.
Chytil is one, if they can get a 2C it makes Trochek the 3C which makes everyone better. not many other on-roster trades feasible unless Goodrow
If they can find a taker (and mutual agreement by him) for Panarin I'd move him in a second.
Maybe trade a couple prospects and I'd shop this year's 1st.
I think with those adjustments the Rangers are a cup contender.

Ok. I never do off-season hockey talk. A rare case for me.
welcome back Quebec nordiques
link - ( New Window )
Draisaitl may join team Germany. USA only beat them 3-2.
I think he would be the best player there.
Can't see Quebec or Atlanta really happening. NHL likely doesn't want to have to go through realignment. Any of the east teams being moved to the west will raise major hell.
USA goals from Carter Mazur and Rocco Grimaldi
Link - ( New Window )
not a very impressive win, but a win and this tournament upsets often happen.
sentimentally I would like to see Hartford and a return of the Whalers logo and goal song, but no way would I move a franchise there if I were an owner.
Atlanta has failed twice already
Quebec has failed already
I'd look somewhere new.

Yeah I saw that today. Oh well I figured as much. He's not awful but I just don't think he's the guy to take them to the next level. That having been said, as the playoffs wore on I liked his lineup decisions better and better. You can definitely quibble with starting Vanacek in game 4 vs Carolina however it's not like he gave up a bunch of softies. We'll see. Hopefully they're able to keep Brunette as an asst one more year at least.
Yeah I would say Milwaukee or Salt Lake City. No way on Houston. I'm ok with Hockey in sunbelt cities, but Houston is an absolutely awful sports town. If the team stink they won't draw all.

FLA @CAR 8pm
Teravainen expected back.
I think Florida wins tonight
hockey is still very provincial. In MA where i live, every work meeting i go to almost every father and half the mothers are hockey coaches. lol.
Same out in MN, MI, even with many of my work buddies from IL and PA hockey is very popular. Maybe a couple more states.
But you get out of the "hockey states" and people aren't interested.
that's why I like these playoffs (other than the hockey quality). It won't change overnight, but you can already see hockey becoming popular in non-traditional markets.
But I also agree it is marketed very poorly.
The NHL idea of outreach is the hockey is for everyone campaigns toward minorities or forcing players to wear pride jerseys in warmups, and I won't comment too much on that, but IMO they are missing a massive opportunity by being so narrow in the marketing. Still do "hockey is for everyone", but don't ignore the masses.
anyway, I won't get on my soapbox on this topic...

"hockey is for everyone" is for the masses. They are selling the idea of inclusivity to their current customer households. The NHL isn't actually trying to make inroads with minority customers.

Do you think so? I have some examples I can share, where I think they are missing a huge opportunity with girls/women - not just the NHL, but NWHL and hockey in general.
boys in youth hockey is growing, but girls had been growing at 5x the pace (which makes sense to me since so many fewer girls played), but then suddenly seems like the push was abandoned.

Its impossible to have this discussion here.
I'm highly cynical of corporate "outreach". I've been on a few of these campaigns from the inside, and was appalled at how shameless it was. Complete theater.

Well look at you lol
Anyway, I live in NJ so we got the Devils and I also run into New Yorkers who cut the sports discussion off when hockey is brought up but they'd rather waste my time talking about the Knicks or Mets.
Terrible. Could alter the entire series
Yet they've won 6 in a row on the road somehow
I would've been fine with the call, but Carolina regained possession of the puck after the "interference",AND the Panther was out of the crease when the puck was turned over to the goal scorer. Should have been allowed IMHO
STILL going
STILL going
I can't believe FL hasn't won this like 5 times already
I'd be BOILING if I were a Canes fan at that game.
I went to bed sometime in OT #1. Would have rather seen the conclusion but even though the spirit was willing, the body wasn’t.

Minority opinion? I've never heard someone ever say they didn't like NHL overtime before. This place never ceases to amaze me. Interesting take, and of course the first time I've heard it was here.
I kept trying to go to bed, but I couldn't lol and I don't care about either team.
I went to the 4 OT playoff game with the Pens and Caps when I lived in DC and one of my work friends was one of the rare Caps fans and wanted to go. NGL I did regret that a little because sitting in the arena when they stop serving beer after the 2nd period and not caring about either team is different - when I would have preferred to watch it on my couch, but in the end I'm glad i was there.
Such an epic game - and playoff should absolutely not be decided by 3v3 (which I love) or shootouts
not sure, but you have to think a couple OT's in you lose the home ice advantage/crowd, if you had one.
I was reading something recently that said road teams are winning in these playoffs at a record pace.

He made multiple statements that it would be "a family decision" in that year end presser. Also said it would be leafs or a hiatus. Hopefully he stays away from the Penguins.
We'll probably never know, the Leafs don't seem to generate much coverage or online discussion.
not sure, could have been either way, I was just going off the statement the Leafs put out. They definitely made it sound like a firing "..decided to part ways.." but if that's team spin, my apologies.
Can you keep Marner, Matthews and Nylander? Tavares is unmovable and expensive for two years. That will be a very interesting team to watch over the next 12 to 14 months.
top heavy roster and no elite goalie.
Hard to pay everyone and still have a bottom 6/bottom pair D that don't get abused.
It's not easy, but also no weeping from me when you have McDavid/Draisaitl/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Hyman, Kane
or
Matthews/Marner/Tavares/Rielly, etc.
this is the definition of a goalie stealing a game. and if you asked me before the season (or even during it) to provide a list of goalies most likely to steak a game in the conference finals, Bobrovsky would have been near the bottom of the list.

I wish they had that data for Richter in the 1997 Devils series. He was unreal in that series - better even than Lundqvist ever was in the playoffs, or better than his own performance in '94.
the best goalie performance in my mind is Tim Thomas when the Bruins beat Vancouver. but he is so unconventional, kind of like Hasek, that I'm not sure analytics grade him well, lol.
But I remember Richter in those days. He was very possibly the best goalie on the planet from that era.
the 1996 World Cup of hockey is my favorite period of hockey, not just because the USA won (it didn't hurt) but those teams were absolutely loaded.
Richter was MVP. Hasek didn't play, but it wouldn't have mattered IMO.
"MATTEAU! MATTEAU! MATTEAU!"
He was streaky and was prone to giving up bad goals at times. When he was on his game, though, there is no one I'd rather have.
Great game.
Hope we get a good one tonight too.

Did you hear what Gretzky (I think said) no one was really going up the middle and everything was off the boards? I didn't feel like I was at the edge of my seat like I was in previous overtime hockey games. I did like it though a ton maybe I did more because it carried me until ALMOST the end of work.

Remember he was 7-0 in penalty shots? That's one statistic that I always remembered back then about him and I left off somewhere paying attention in 1997. He saved that one against Washington that was called on Messier but did he allow any after that? I cannot remember exactly because those years were a blur. I was still a Rangers fan but they were very hard to watch those years.
Richter made something like 50 saves in that game. Just unreal.

Gretzky is not great in this role. I really want him to be, because any time the guy opens his mouth I'm expecting him to impact some wisdom, but he is so boring and he is so monotone almost personality-less. Not a big fan of Messier or Chelios either and I love all those guys (on ice).
Hank is better, his insights are actually insightful, but mostly about the goalies and goalies are all nuts.
Valliquette is the best but Lundqvist is great too. I wish Vally would get TNT playoff time.
I also think Biz sucks. Subban bores me.
The NBA with Shaq and Barkley is fun to watch. I'm more of a casual basketball fan, though.
I was wondering, when do you start thinking about putting the other goaltender in? I'd have thought about doing it after the second or third OT, but I don't think anyone ever does it.

He was always great in the playoffs vs the Devils. People rightfully gom on and on about Messier and his 3rd period parlor trick, but Richter stood on his head that game. Devils completely dominated most of the first 40 minutes and could easily have been ahead 4-0. That '97 series really was about disallowed goals and that crazy in the crease rule.
I was wondering, when do you start thinking about putting the other goaltender in? I'd have thought about doing it after the second or third OT, but I don't think anyone ever does it.
it has to be harder for a goalie to come in cold in double OT, no? I would hate to think about being the replacement goalie and letting in a softie after the starter made 55 saves. I doubt, other than for injury, teams would just change the goalie, but I'm not sure.
As for the tiring, I am amazed players can get through a whole game. I think boxers have to be in the best shape of any athlete. I sparred with a pro at the gym I used to go to (like 30 years ago when I went to a gym) because he needed a sparring partner and holy shit after 3 rounds I could barely keep my hands up to block punches. it was the most physically exerting activity I have ever done. I kind of got into a little and if some of the mma stuff was popular then I may have gotten into it (recreationally obviously).
but other than boxing I think hockey requires the most physical endurance of any sport and I'm amazed professional hockey players can make it through the average game let alone playoffs or OT. I was listening to Crosby talk about it once and he was talking about the 2010 Olympics and he said the pace was so fast he had to shorten his average shift to 37 seconds (or something like that).
By the second OT it reminds me of a boxer in the 10th round.
Or whatever ...
Who is your least favorite Ranger or all time?
USA goals from
Gauthier
Tuch (3 pts)
Grimaldi (2 pts)
DeSmith with the shutout.
They are now a perfect 5-0 in group play with a 21:5 goals for/against.
Two games left. France and Sweden. Sweden is probably for 1st place in Group A.
Sweden has an OT win, so they are 1pt behind USA depending what happens with their game vs France today

Oooh, that's a tough one. I'd have to think about that. First one that came to mind was Donald Brashear. Second one that came to mind is Chris Drury, both the player and the GM. Wade Redden? Brett Howden is up there, for sure. Erik Christensen was garbage, but it wasn't entirely his fault.
I agree, I'm just saying if you pull the goalie to start say the 3rd OT. I wouldn't want to be that goalie just coming in to the game.
Especially if you pull the goalie just due to fatigue. Injury sure - in that Pens Caps game Barasso was injured and replaced I think by Wreggett, but that's different obviously.

When a goalie gives up a goal in a double OT he's the last one I blame. Maybe it was the Jason Arnott goal I am thinking of but there was so much space (and it was a perfect pass by Elias) that how could he not score?

Most forwards play around ~15 minutes a night, that doesn't seem that tough. 60 minutes like guys played the other night seems brutal.
Let's allow though for the fact that a: they're not sprinting the entire 15 min and to be conservative we'll say b: hockey players are slow, so say a 40 yard dash takes the average hockey player 7 seconds, so make it 10 seconds to allow for less sprinting time.
15 minutes of ice time at that rate = 90 40 yard dashes at full speed.
it seems exhausting to me.
Even if it was 50.
The countervailing factor is the physicality - I think that wears you down quickly.
The countervailing factor is the physicality - I think that wears you down quickly.
I agree, but it also depends on the pace, I think playoffs is faster than regular season and playing a full hockey game is still pretty physically demanding.
just watch the in-between period player interviews, half those guys can barely speak they have no breath. and they've been off the ice a while.
The Swiss have Hischier, Neiderreiter, Fiala, Siegenthaler Canada's big names are Toffoli, Lucic, Fantilli, Krebs, Blais

looking at the FLA goal
CAR has been dominant, out shooting FLA 12-1, including 6 short-handed shots.

A point in this game of any type clinches at worst 2nd place in Group A.
Depending on if Sweden and USA win their games today in any way (Sweden plays Denmark) then Group A winner will come down to USA vs Sweden on Tuesday.
puck drop imminent in Vegas, DAL @LVG 3pm, LVG leads 1-0.
Meanwhile USA beating France 5-0 in the 3rd. Cutter Gauthier with a couple goals and an assist, Drew O'Connor with a couple goals.
They were leading Canada 2-1 with 16 seconds left and the faceoff in Norways zone. Canada center won the faceoff directly out of play - should have been a face off outside the zone, but the refs said no for some reason and redid the faceoff in Norways zone. Norway won the faceoff but Canada beat them to the puck and wound up scoring the tying goal.
Headed to OT
I thought Raanta played well last game, but Brind'amour knows what he's doing.

I didn't notice any obvious injury.
the "big" game is USA vs Sweden at 9:20.
USA is perfect in group play so far 6-0-0-0 for 18 points with a 30:5 goals for:against
Sweden is 5-1-0-0 with just the OTW blemish on their record for 17 points and 23:3
Winner gets #1 seed in Group A, loser is the 2 seed.
Finland, in 3rd can't catch either team no matter what happens.
Germany is the surprise 4th place finisher
top 4 advance to the medal round.
In Group B
Switzerland secured top spot
2nd-4th still up for grabs among 4 teams.
Czechia has 13 points through 6 games
Canada has 12 points though 6 games
Slovakia has 11 points through 7 games
Latvia has 11 points through 6 games
Canada and Czechia play each other, winner of any type is in 2nd place. Loser is probably in 3rd.
Latvia plays Switzerland and needs a point to have a shot., Not sure about tiebreaker between Latvia and Slovakia.
QF's are 1vs4 and 2v3 and will be played on the 25th.
Semis the 27th
Finals the 28th

they finish group play at 6-1-0-0 and 20 points for most in the tournament.
won't matter at all unless they win the next three.
Sweden led 1-0, then USA scored the next three.
USA goals from:
Nick Bonino
Connor Garland
Lane Hutson
Dylan Samberg
Sweden had two goals from 2023 draft eligible Leo Carlsson
The Swiss win Group B and wind up with 19 points, 1 shy of the USA.
QF's:
USA (A1) vs Czechia (B4)
Sweden (A2) vs Latvia (B3)
Canada (B2) vs Finland (A3)
Switzerland (B1) vs Germany (A4)
Czechia's notable players are Dominik Kubalik (DET), Karel Vejmelka (G, ARI), Jakub Zboril (BOS)
So hard to predict these games.
Almost no upset is really an upset, don't you agree?
USA went undefeated and IMO didn't get much help by drawing the Czechs.
The Swedes probably have the most talent.
Canada is never an easy out.
Finland is never an easy out.
Germany is the surprise to me. I guess them and Latvia, but I wouldn't be that surprised if either wins.

It was fun as a novelty but I have no desire to go to our tuna can stadium for a shit production.
Dallas is in trouble.
That was a nice goal lol
lol.
lol.
Even the elite goalies are volatile. Oettinger was unbelievable last year.

he was. and if you asked me the worst goalie in the playoffs I'd have said Bobrovsky even though he wasn't the starter when the playoffs began.

The fact that a two-time Vezina winner is largely viewed as a joke illustrates the point about goalie volatility.
If he doesn't play, I like CAR to avoid the sweep.
World Championships times set for tomorrow (ET) - there are two rinks - one in Finland one in Latvia:
USA (A1) vs Czechia (B4): 9:20AM

Sweden (A2) vs Latvia (B3): 1:20PM
Canada (B2) vs Finland (A3): 1:20PM
I don't think I've ever seen a dumber penalty in my life before?
"I don't think anyone in the building feels worse than he does about it. I'm not going to pile on him. He's been a leader here for his entire career and leads by example every day on and off the ice. He made a mistake. Fortunately, Mark Stone's OK," he said.
DeBoer acknowledged that Benn could be looking at supplemental discipline from the NHL for the cross-check. George Parros, director of the department of player safety, attended the game.
"We will live with the consequences, whatever they are. We'll live with them tonight and we'll live with them going forward," DeBoer said. "It's a reactionary sport. It's a heat-of-the-moment sport. There's a lot of stuff going on there on the ice. I'm not judge and jury. I'm not going to play that tonight."
Jim Nill (DAL), Don Sweeney (BOS) and Bill Zito (FLA)
Toss up IMO, all deserving.
Duclair?
Seemed like a clean hit by Bennett.
Slavin didn't look good.
2-0 FLA
.
Yep!😁😁
Lol...you gotta admit, that grin was awesome...he looked like a kid having the time of his life.
And to think, the Panthers postseason was THISCLOSE to ending on that Marchand breakaway in like Game 5 or 6.
A 25 year old superstar who shows up in the playoffs.
I can dream.
Such revisionist history though. Tkachuk was a great prospect, but Matthews had the "generational" level.
And it's not like Tkachuk had a great playoff track record until this year.
The best thing you could say about Tkachuk over Mathews prior to this year is Tkachuk's teams won a playoff series. One.
It's kind of why I wanted the Habs to take Brady over Kotkaniemi in 2018. I knew the way Brady's game, like Matthew's would translate.
But Matthews is a great player (but softer than I would like)
To pjcas' point about the Tkachuks and their style of play, would not surprise me in the least to see LVK shut down FLA as Knights style 'is very hard to play against', assuming they finish off the Stars. Fairly easy to project Knights as favorites even though they don't have Bob in net.

Adin Hill has been better than Bobrovsky (in fewer games, but facts are facts).
Maybe not in terms of expected goals saved, but in every other metric.

Matthews is probably still better than Tkachuk. Leafs don't deserve criticism for that. The Oilers and Canucks deserve shit for their picks, though. Puljujarvi and Juolevi. lol
Not quite as bad, because Kotkaniemi is a good player, but not in Tkachuk's class.
USA 3-0 over the Czechs.
USA goals from:
Matt Coronato (CAL)
Nick Perbix (TBL)
Cutter Gauthier (PHI)
Shutout from Casey DeSmith (15 shots)
Germany is beating the Swiss 3-1 in the 3rd.
the other two games are at 1:20.

I agree with this. Vegas isn't a "fun to watch" hockey team but they get it done and win.
Also I don't think Florida is a team who needs to be "shut down" they just look like a team who takes care of lucky bounces when they can and capitalize on their opportunities. Not exactly Gretzky or Super Mario with their passing but they keep winning.
I guess that's why the Rangers/Devils/Islanders are all sitting at home?
Game 6 v. Boston was really a one goal game - empty netter at the end.
They are fortunate for sure, but you make your own breaks too.
Interesting. Bruce Cassidy gets fired from the Bruins, goes to Vegas.
He was the first team to beat the Bruins in Boston this year. His team is tops in the West.
Now he's most likely going to the Finals with a chance to beat the team that ousted the Bruins.
Talk about revenge!!!!!
this and honestly I was surprised that everyone on the telecast including have another donut you fat pig Koharski said no way interference on the game winner. He had his stick between his legs the whole time. They easily could have deemed that interference. Not to mention the missed high stick in the final minute of game 3. Though I'm sure Islander fans will have no pity on missed calls against Carolina lol.
It's useless having them IMO.

I agree. I think they should have called it back. Watching it live, I was wondering what the hell the goaltender was doing.

Canada beat Finland 4-1
So, it's down to:
USA vs Germany Saturday at 11:20am
Canada vs Latvia Saturday at 7:20am
No one had that final 4.
USA beat Germany 3-2 in group play, Germany has more "star power" than USA.
Canada beat Latvia 6-0 in group play
So many odd-man rushes for Vegas.
and if you go by the suspension rule of thumb that 1 playoff game = 5 regular season games and view that as a 10 game suspension, I can live with it, but I would have thought maybe longer.
So, I guess there is a shot Sullivan shakes loose I guess, but I can't imagine Dubas would just let go Sullivan, I feel like he would want a worse year than this past one before making that call.
Dubas also allegedly consider the Senators and being brought in with a potential new ownership group.
What is it I don't get with Dubas?
I think of the Maple leafs as very top heavy and not a well rounded team.

I think Dallas wins and makes a series out of this. Vegas will likely win in 6 but you never know?
some teams had been doing it through the whole playoffs. Toronto, Edmonton, maybe more.
Adam Fantilli (2023 draft eligible) with the GW halfway through the 3rd. Canada tacked on a ENG.
Canada was losing 2-1 entering the 3rd.
Good game, loved the energy and passion from Latvia, in the end Canada was too deep
USA up 2-0 on Germany.
I need to go do some yard work. lol, will check in on the game later.
it's not even really an upset (thought it looks like they did choke).
Moritz Seider is the best player on either team.
the rest of the players are pretty comparable IMO, maybe a slight edge to the US, but not like some lopsided roster. They played a 1-goal game in group play.
USA always does seem to choke in this event though.
Hill let in the first questionable goal I have seen from him. It was tipped, but still seemed questionable (to me, lol).
Now DAL has a chance to head back home to force a game 7.
Would be crazy if the Celtics and Stars both come back from down 0-3 in the same year.
This is how they usually do it. mediocre group play, get better as it goes on, and does enough to win.
I didn't watch the games today, but not surprised at all.

Gotta give DeBoer credit: not charismatic, has his head in the tablet 'too much' lol, but down 3-0 in games and 2-0 in Game 5, they held together. Dallas was so aggressive on the forecheck and in neutral ice. Clendennin? A guy the Rangers cast aside

When did Luke Glendening get cast aside by the Rangers? Is that who you mean?
Long time Red Wings player.
He is one of those little known NHL success stories that happen less in the NHL more in the NFL. From Un-drafted to 10+ year NHL career. Know how he made it? He can win a face-off. ok, he can do more than that, but really IMO he's a bottom 6 guy who can win a face off.
Benn back for DAL, and you know they won't consider sitting him, but they should. they won 3 games without him.
Unfortunately, as the team captain and a good player he's in.
I do want DAL to win, but Benn playing has me kind of hoping they lose. But I don't want LVG to win, so I'm conflicted.
It's good I don't care that much about it. Just hope for OT but more importantly a game 7.
8pm in DAL
Huh?
I remember watching FLA vs BOS and saying how bad FLA D looked. FLA D looked like Norris candidates compared to DAL. Other than Heiskanen (who was not great) their D were absolutely brutal, coughing up pucks, covering no one, getting beat by speed, bad pinches, hanging Otter out to dry (and he did nothing to help himself - his positioning was so erratic). And the forwards looked like it was a pre-season season game against a non-rival. If Gallant was fired, at least in part, due to game 7 vs NJD, deBoer should be worried.

The only games they won in the series is when Benn was out. That should say something right there.
Both big letdowns, but Bruins bigger because they won Presidents trophy, but Celtics probably hurts more because how close they were to the finals.
I am still going to watch, and hope for OT's and game 7, but I'd take competitive hockey.
It's the little things that matter.
It's the little things that matter.
I think Vegas wins the whole thing in 5 games. Possibly 6.
If those two play like they have all playoffs, we're in for a great series.
FLA D is porous. LVG D is stout. but the forwards on FLA are more talented (the top lines) so see who attacks their opponents weakness better and which goalie maintains their high level of play.

PJ- DeBoer is such a weird coach to get a handle on. Even seeing him close up with the Devils for a few years and leading them to the finals in '12. He's become a a classic re-tread coach who's had success everywhere he's gone including making a few finals. However once he gets to the biggest moments his teams never seem to get it done. Also he doesn't have a real go to system, though he likes to rely on a heavy forecheck which does leave the D vulnerable at times. The one stop where he didn't have a ton of success was Vegas. Like any re-tread he seems to have a shelf life of about 3 seasons before things go south. I suspect Dallas keeps him around, but you're right it's bizarre what a no show they were both last night and Game 3, when you would think with their backs against the wall at home they'd give it everything they had.

The Washington Capitals have named Spencer Carbery the team’s head coach.
#ALLCAPS
but I think it makes sense given the state of the roster.
Nashville and Washington will be rebuilding IMO.
If he can't keep Matthews after the season he will have "lost" Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk and Auston Matthews in a 3-year span. Sure he got back Huberdeau and Weegar, but the results were no bueno.
not sure. I don't know he ever said a specific reason. I do notice a lot of American players lately prefer to play for American teams (especially since COVID). Border crossing was a major hassle for families and the new Canadian rules about home ownership became stifling.
But I never heard a specific reason.

The Blue Jackets intend to name Mike Babcock as their new head coach once his contract with the Maple Leafs expires at the end of this month, Sportsnet can confirm.
I read speculation from someone, I forget who, that the Rangers and Blue Jackets were effectively in a stalemate pursuing the same candidate. lol, I hope not.
I'm right here, pj.
Babcock has the look and personality 'hockey men' love. But I just don't see him as some great coach. Quenneville - a total douche - is at least great.
I think the NHL is weird. You have 3-5 great coaches, 15-20 others who are fine and can succeed depending on the team (Gallant, AV, and Laviolette are in this camp, and then some dogshit. There's obviously degrees in that fat middle but you get my point.
Sullivan, Cooper, Brind'Amour are top tier. Maybe I'm missing someone.
The bad thing is, if he wins a cup this year all those teams hiring retreads are justified.
I view him more as a retread than someone like Lavy or Hitchcock or Sutter, etc because Maurice has a sub .500 playoff winning percentage (he's barely over .500 in the regular season) and has 1 trip to the finals and it was over 20 years ago.
Hitchcock and Sutter were all good coaches at most spots who ran their course. Same with Laviolette imo.
NHL coaches should make a SCF once every 15 years (I guess 16 now). A lot of moving pieces - team quality, luck, etc. Maurice just seems meh.
He has a career 44% winning percentage in the playoffs.
49% in the regular season.
before this season.
25 years, made it to one SCF. His teams have missed the playoffs more than they made it.
Look at Cassidy, too. He seems solid. Not great. Got fired from Boston who then had the best regular season of the post-lockout era.
Had same thought: was Hill going to get a game misconduct for swinging his stick at Cousins?
a face off.
Great reaction by Duclair
Really physical game
Wish I had watched the Bruins- Panthers series
Was Rat in tears in the Game 7 loss?
FLA has won 18 of 22 since
I wish they would get rid of all the high sticking/puck touching rules. If the concern is high sticking someone's face, there is already a penalty for that.
I always thought it was crossbar, not shoulder, so I had no idea what they were talking about being shoulder standing straight up. Chara's shoulder is much higher than Caufield's (for example) so I thought they used crossbar so it wasn't subjective.
The crossbar applies to deflections into the goal. The height of the shoulder applies to knocking the puck down and then playing it (whether by the guy who knocked it down or a teammate).

Yeah, I never realized it until last night. No idea why it should be different with playing a puck with a high stick or directing it into the net. Seems like it should be consistent.
Also, as I noted when I was having the conversations with myself last night during the 1st, thought Hill could easily have gotten a two for roughing in not a GM for whacking someone with his stick, if admittedly a half swing.
plus, goalies are treated kind of like QB's for the most part.
From a competitive fairness standpoint, I think it makes sense for the goalie to have a fixed height they have to deal with for tip-ins, but for other plays to treat height like a natural advantage that players have the benefit of when playing the puck. Separate from that, from an enforcement standpoint, when a player's not near the net I think it's much easier to judge a high stick call against the player's body rather than having to try and visualize the cross-bar height compared to where the stick is.
That doesn't address Brett's point of why you need it in the first place. With helmets and visors mandatory, it seems like the precautionary nature of the rule is perhaps overkill.
An imperfect analogy: I ref lacrosse, including women's: the only equipment they wear, are allowed to wear (other than keepers) are eye goggles. The rules are byzantine to protect their persons in the absence of equipment, compared to the boys' game. Head gear is prohibited (again, except for keepers) on the theory that if you start armoring the players up, it will invite more illegal stick to body/face contact.
I'd argue that if the rule against stick above the normalized shoulder were eliminated, it would send the wrong message (see above) and invite greater carelessness/volition, especially in games where a team is trying to 'send a message'. Maybe I'm a wuss, but I don't think rules to enhance player safety in a fast and violent sport are a bad thing. But I don't play in adult leagues like some of you guys.
My view is that those types of plays are so rare that I'd rather do away with any subjective judgment by letting them do it.
I also think players are just so disciplined and good at this stuff that the increased risk of injury is minimal.
I'd also pucks be kicked in, punched in, etc.
It's one penalty I like how they call it. I don't think it should be a 2/4 if you draw blood. it should only ever be a 2 unless you swing your stick with intent. which is hard to discern but not that hard. I don't like any judgment calls at all in any sport when they can be avoided which is why I suggest uniformity with the high stick playing a puck.
With the high stick penalty and the extra 2 I am a little surprised players have not started carrying razors or sharp objects in their gloves to cut themselves when the refs aren't looking like in wrestling. I'm positive some players already had cuts on their face and squeezed them when another stick comes up and it gets called so they can get the extra 2.
I also hate when people criticize a player for jerking their head back and say "the stick didn't even touch him" I have played with and without a cage and the reaction is 100% no different, a stick comes up toward your head, you move your head back as fast and violently as you can to avoid contact. Sometimes you even fall because you move your head and neck so fast to avoid contact. And then there is the millisecond after the incident when you take stock and feel your face and wonder "did it hit me"? Some players absolutely embellish it and that is unfortunate but overwhelmingly players do not, it's just a normal reaction.
Just curious what part of high sticking you think is overkill? Hitting the player with the high stick or the puck?
Prob. I watched the highlights so they probably cut out what you are talking about.
As game was winding down, TNT graphic'ed a stat that of 78 SC Finals (I'm sure the number is off was w/o glasses) with teams going up 2 - 0, the team up has won the Cup all but 3 times..ugh , not the Finals but you know who last 2 years

Not really paying attention to this series. Two pretty nondescript teams.
Howden's having himself a nice playoffs, but he's still not particularly good. Just a mediocre player getting hot, a la John Druce.
1st time NHL head coach, so no "retread" and that makes sense IMO since ANA is rebuilding and should not be expected to win for a couple years.
I do love their some of their talent though. Zegras is a cornerstone player IMO. Drysdale, McTavish, Gaucher, Perreault, Pastujov, Zellweger, and more.
Plus add Fantilli and they have a 1C - maybe Zegras moves to wing or Fantilli is 2C to start.
The Los Angeles Kings would also be part of this monster trade. Defenseman Sean Walker and goaltender Cal Petersen (30% of retained salary) would head to Philadelphia.

Some coaches or pundits say you want and need your goalie to be your best penalty killer if you want your PK to be successful so not pointing a finger at anyone else, but if this is true, and Hart gets moved it could be a steal.
He's 24 years old.

FYI I love Kristy but she's a complete Devils homer so I think she's really loosely speculating/wishful thinking. Just like Timo, if Hellybuck becomes available he's such a perfect fit that of course Fitzgerald will be in but there would be other suiters too for sure including very possibly Buffalo.

I really don't want them to move Schmid but I would give up Daws, Blackwood's rights, and Vanecek if it landed them Hart or Hellebuyck. I know they would have to add more but those 3 are expendable.
One goalie I wouldn't be surprised to see moved either is Saros.

It wouldn't be my first choice to move Schmid in the deal, but if we had to to get it done I'd do it for Hellybuck, Hart or Saros if he became available. Don't forget in the middle of all that goalie slop of a season 2 seasons ago Dawes acquitted himself pretty well for a nice stretch. He or Vanacek could be a solid back-up to a franchise guy.

Wow I knew Severson would get paid, all top 2 pairing UFA Dmen do but man thats a lot of term too. Good job by Fitz getting a 3rd for him. Severson was a good soldier for some lean years here. Solid, underrated 2 way dman. I believe he might be just about the last Lou draft pick if I'm not mistaken. Graves will follow him out the door soon. It's time for Nemec & Luke Hughes to be regulars and to put the $ towards extending Timo and maybe Bratt and adding a mid tier UFA fwd or two with size. If they can't extend Bratt maybe they get in on DeBrincat.
Alex Tuch and Peyton Krebs, a 1st (Noah Ostlund) and 2023 2nd round pick (for Eichel and a 3rd) - and I'd say Vegas pulled off a heist (if Eichel can stay healthy).
Props to Vegas for having the guts to take a shot.

I was very happy to see this news earlier. I’m glad that they landed a draft pick for Severson but I am shocked that he received 8 years. You are right it’s time for Hughes and Nemec to play regular minutes but I hope that they can sign an inexpensive veteran better than Brendan Smith as a security blanket.

As mentioned during second intermission tonight, nothing is done until it’s done, but Ryan Huska is the leading contender to be the next head coach of the Calgary Flames
that is pretty good.
For some comparisons, Caufield did 16, but he's 5' 7" and I think its easier for smaller. lighter, people to do pull ups. Case in point, Lane Hutson did 18 last year. Jack Hughes (not that one, the 2022 Jack Hughes (he is 6 feet) did 19 and that's the all time most for the combine).
Adin Hill is Conn Smythe right now. they may give it to Eichel or Marchessault, but Hill is the difference.
Looks like it's gonna happen

That Hill save with less than a second left was insane. I wonder if Pietrangelo gets suspended for game 5 for coming out of the penalty box for that melee after the final buzzer. Not sure what rule is there once the buzzer sounds whether he's treated as bench personell or not. Either way I think the off ice official that opened the door(if it was them not him) is gonna hear it from the NHL.

I can't tell if a star is being born or if this is Jordan Binnington 2.0 (wins a cup and stagnates).
Goalies are developing later. Seems to be a trend, so at 27, if Hill becomes a top tier goalie, could start seeing less investment in young goalies and more in this range. if we aren't already seeing it.
I'm of two minds about that save. He was face down on the ice as a result of the scrum in the crease, w/o time or ability to quickly regain his feet. So, for sure, a goalie is going to dry to make himself as big as possible under that (and all) circumstance and (upside down) snow angel. Tkachuk could not, maybe didn't think to, elevate the puck. Didn't watch the PG so I may have missed interims slow mo shots from the scrum on.
And about refs swallowing their whistles, Hill has been a revelation since Edmonton series, but man he gets away with a lot of stick swinging at his opponents, last night no exception, multiple.
For example, the mock pick to the Rangers (by Morreale) Danill But (great name), is massive and he's skilled massive not just all size.
top 10/15 in most drafts (but he's Russian so he's knocked down a little).
Danny Nelson (mocked to Vegas at 32) is a top 15 player in many drafts.

The only saving grace would be Cassidy winning a cup his first season out of Boston. - one when the Bruins won the President's Trophy and were kicking dirt on Cassidy.
reality is as much as it pains me, Vegas has been dominant these whole playoffs.
5 games vs WIN, 6 games vs EDM, 6 games vs DAL and can close out FLA in 5.
That's not fair, Route 9; you know I've given him plenty props. I do confess harboring one resentment, that he's equal in size to at least 2 Igors, giving him unfair advantage. lulz
I remember my college team going up against Dryden in the late 60s: talk about the Giant 🐙 he appeared surreal in size compared to the 5'7" - 5'8" kids who comprised the better part of rosters back then. Hill is also 6'6" but wider, heavier. Dryden was unique back then in the NHL as well. Now he'd be one of a pack

I'm with you PJ when my team gets a eliminated I'm ready for the off season and the moves. I have no beef with Vegas winning it. They have proved that 1st season was no fluke and at least their fans had to suffer through blowing a game 7 4-0 3rd period lead lol.
Devils are setting themselves up to be this type of team.
The Pacioretty trade was a disaster for them. They stepped in shit with Adin Hill.
Is there a bigger story these playoffs besides Hill? A 27-year old journeyman goalie. Never started more than 25 games until this year. Decent but not great career numbers - always seemed more backup-ish than starter IMO.
He's been unreal in the playoffs and the biggest reason for LVG success.
What I hate about it isn't they have no stars, that part is awesome, I just mention the no stars to show expectations, what I hate about it is, it's not reproduceable.
And someone will try. I can almost guarantee big off-season contracts for Hill, Barbashev, and anyone who is a FA from that team and I hope it's not from MTL.
I like what the Rangers have done, with the 20-20 hindsight exception of Panarin. And I only say with hind sight because of the contract. No way Panarin should be behind only McDavid and MacKinnon in contract AAV (not even considering the contract was signed 4 years ago where you would think a lot of players have passed him. Sure COVID and the cap has played a part, but not all of it - some of is just a bad contract - I hope Gorton learned a lesson).
But yeah, there is a palpable feeling in this city right now. Even people at work who never talk hockey are like, “I can’t wait for this game tonight”. If the Knights win tonight, this city is going to go bonkers over the next week.
I hope they do it, but I pray it doesn’t get violent tonight. Nine people were shot in Denver last night so hopefully that doesn’t happen here.

jeez, pj, normally I find your thoughts and prose eminently comprehensible and 80% of the time defensible. I have no fekking clue what you are saying here. lol

Panarin was the beneficiary of an insane NYI/NYR bidding war. NYI's final bid was a tad higher, but it seemed very likely he would've signed with NYI had NYR not been willing to go so high.
I absolutely do wish he signed with NYI though. I think he would've been enough to get over the TB hump at least once (Lee's $7M hit wouldn't have been retained and he was injured in the playoffs during NYI's best team) when NYI made those deep runs.

yeah i think what vegas has done is masterful.
karlsson, marchessault, theodore, riley smith are all key to the identity they've continued building since day 1.
swiping mark stone for brannstrom was robbery. another situation where NYI were the supposed bridesmaid and like panarin if they hadnt been who knows what happens vs tampa either year.
the eichel trade and pietrangelo signing were both pretty ballsy in the sense that they just kept doubling down even as many thought that first year was a fluke. and they established a culture right away that got all of the above to buy in.
they werent perfect and along the way they had their share of mistakes (pacioretty, statsny, lehner) and certainly cycled through coaches, but they have been aggressive, committed to winning, and generally made good evaluations. is the goaltending right now probably lucky? yes. but when you put yourself in the playoffs almost every year with a solid roster you give yourself that chance of lightning in a bottle. i think their template is exactly what any fan should want from their org since getting franchise players like McDavid, Crosby, Hedman, Hughes etc. generally requires a lot of bad hockey and good luck in almost equal measures.

lol. what I'm trying to say and having trouble articulating is on paper Vegas should not be good.
I think overall it's a good thing they are because it shows that hard work can pay off, but it's dangerous because teams will try and replicate their model - all sports leagues IMO are copycat leagues. Some team does something that works other teams try and do the same thing. I don't think their model is able to be duplicated because some things were just unpredictable.
Because of their success players like Hill and Barbashev will be way overpaid.
Goodrow is a NYR example of "copying" TBL resulting in an overpay.
pietrangelo is arguably one of the more decorated dmen in the last decade and captained a prior cup in st lou.
eichel had the huge contract pre-vegas for a reason and would be a much bigger star if he didnt have the back issues.
theodore and karlsson have each made all star games.
stephenson, martinez, and barbashev were smart adds with prior cups over the last several years.
i think their blue print is exactly what any NHL fan should want their team to do. hire great coaches with proven track records and add winning players who play winning hockey with the most talent possible.
really the only way to get players better than mark stone/alex pietrangelo is with an abundance of top 3 draft picks and its to their credit vegas hasnt been in that position.
He's a good player, just not a star IMO.
Eichel is, just with the neck injury Vegas took a risk and it paid off.
Pietrangelo is awesome, but past his prime.
they call themselves them misfits and I agree with that. Karlsson, Marchessault, Reilly, etc. I feel like Vegas is the epitome of a team that is greater than the sum of its parts.
hard to replicate that IMO.

good coaches do it. brindamour does in carolina, cassidy, deboer, gallant all did it before getting to vegas. much worse has been said about NYI over their recent playoff runs.
you could probably call any team that wins a cup without a few HOF'ers a 'sum of its parts' but it does happen. Vegas and St Louis being 2 recent examples.
teams like tampa and colorado and less recently chicago, pitt, washington needed to get lucky with hof high draft picks like doughty, ov, hedman, stamkos, kane, toews, crosby, malkin. copy catting the vegas way is much better for the game i think.
Clearly the expansion format helped enable teams like Vegas and Seattle (not taking away from coaches or GM's) but I view Vegas as having a 1st line (kind of) and 3 3rd lines. Excellent and deep D group, and timely goaltending.
they are very disciplined.
Anyway, I'm not articulating it well so I'll let it go after this - I think it's a good thing and admirable what they have done (so far) and how they have done it. I do not think it is repeatable and GM's will lose their jobs trying to repeat it. I hope it's not Hughes who shells out $$$ for Hill or Barbashev or any other pieces Vegas sheds after the season.
What you refer to (high draft picks/development leading to improvement) is how parity is designed to work. And it's still failed in places like EDM and BUF.

im not saying it doesn't necessarily work, im saying actively strategizing to go that route (aka tanking) would be a worse thing to copy cat.
Goodrow is a NYR example of "copying" TBL resulting in an overpay.
Before I read down to the Goodrow line, TBL and his signing by Drury (get more gritty) was exactly what your post had me thinking.
Last year in the ECF (even though NYR were ousted), as well as TBL the year before, and VGK this year, I enjoy watching teams that are all in to their style of play, hard work, more or less 100% all-for-one and one-for-all. It is appealing when you have a roster that is on fire this way, the same way I enjoyed TBL's years and Cooper's stewardship, as much as a bastid as NYR fans often felt. It's also the fallacy of the Goodrow signing, coming into a very different set-up and, apparently, with a coach who could not extract the selfless, hardworking, cohesion across the roster. It's why I'm with Rick and Victor (on the Laviolette thread): these NYR, esp. the top six, alienate me for being above the fray, unwilling to sublimate 'their game' for the betterment of the team...and not because I was any fan of GG.
I think Cassidy's is a great story, pretty humble given the precipice over which he's looking. I do think Eric has a point in terms of (dare I say it) 'talent'. Sometimes, the talent needs the catalysts and opportunity and the 'want to' to emerge as such. In sum, I don't get the put downs of Vegas, and yours is more nuanced.

Absolutely and that's no one's goal and the new rules guarantee nothing in terms of Bedard/McDavid etc.
In my head I see it like every GM looks at a roster and forms a plan to make it into a contender. that involves the draft, development, free agents, trades, etc.
I just don't think most GM's if they see Vegas and say, if they can do it, why not us, and try and rebuild a similar team, will be successful - that is what I meant by fools gold.
It's kind of the easier way out IMO and like I said will likely lead to a lot of GMs losing jobs.
like whoever overpays this offseason for Hill and Barbashev or overpays in a trade for Theodore to be a top pair D or whatever move they make that puts them on the "recreating Vegas" path.

if i was trying to copy cat vegas it would be this:
1. hire accomplished coaches
2. use salary cap space to take on higher paid guys from winning teams who need space (culture players)
3. develop young players well, especially the more talented ones (in their case this was more young players from other orgs than draft picks since they were an expansion team)
4. be willing to aggressively go after difference making talent in trades + fa
both vegas and seattle as expansion teams were born out of #2 with players like eakin, eberle, smith, maf, neal, gourde, etc.
#4 is the hardest to get right bc demand always far exceeds supply and that's where vegas had the most mixed successes/failures. but they had more good than bad. i think what we saw at the deadline was teams getting more aggressive since we've seen vegas, tampa, boston, and some others do that. the islanders havent made a first round pick in like 4 or 5 years.
Damn. This really sucks.

Yeah, Habs have #5 and #31. Still #31 is a great return for Chiarot who was a rental for FLA and a regret signing by DET

Having played in Calgary, I never saw him play much, but he seems like a whiner. Game 4 after the game ending for example. Plus, I can’t stand his brother, Brady. So maybe I’m transferring my displeasure with younger brother to the older brother.
For a while there, I thought your boys would get another possible top 10-12 pick, but they made the playoffs by one stinking point over surging Buffalo. In fact they beat Buffalo in Florida 3-2 right at the end which pretty much sealed a playoff birth for them. Buffalo came close….but that means little now.
I like players who play "complete" games.
Plus I have been watching them forever.
People always think players who play with emotion are whiners when they're not on their team (IMO).
Rangers cup coming in 2091.
Honestly not that crazy about that deal. Too much $ and I know 8 years is what they get, but it's too much term.

After the regular season I would have been very happy with that deal but after his disappointing playoff performance I am meh. It's perfectly fair AAV but the 8 years is a long deal. The good news is that he is only 24 so it's not like they are signing a 29 year old for 8 years. Also it's tough to complain about giving Bratt $7.875 million when Palat makes $6 million a year for the next four years.
I wanted them to lock up Meier first but hopefully he is announced soon or else the Devils may need to make a difficult decision and seriously consider moving him.

Yeah that is the thing as the talent like Jack, Luke, Nemec etc... Mature and hopefully having Timo here going forward there is definitely upside for Bratt to even become a bigger scorer hopefully.
Presumption is Cole could have got more if were a FA (he was an RFA), but took a small discount for term and to respect a "pecking order" where no one makes more than Suzuki (team captain).
I suspect similar for Bratt.

Yeah. Pretty much true, plus it's similar $ and term that the Sabres gave Cozens and Thompson. Just curious what outsiders think of Bratt as fans of opposing teams. Do you guys think he's worth that type of deal? One thing it's not like the Devils rushed to give it to him. These have been pretty acrimonious negations especially last Summer. They have pretty much gone year to year with him through RFA.

That's going to be the issue with Meier. The Devils don't want to give anyone more than Jack Hughes who makes $8 million. Rumors are that the Devils offered Meier $8 million and don't want to go higher which will surely be a problem IMO.

I can't imagine Fitz pursued Timo for months thinking he would get him for under 8 mill/per long term. He'd have to be a naive fool, and Fitz is not that. This supposed existence of a "Jack cap" for fwds I believe has been made up by the writers.
