Should get reposted. I was down on using a higher pick on C but after reading that article, I honestly wouldn’t have been mad using a first rounder on him..it was a fantastic article.
RE: I didn’t want a center but if you’re taking one here,
he’s the guy. Fills a need. Safe pick in the sense that he’s a known quantity and he ticks the “smart” and “tough” boxes. Should be an upgrade over what the Giants had at C last season.
How would you not want a center, have u seen the depth chart?
if you want to get pumped up on him go look for anything jim nagy has said about him. he compared him to creed humphrey and said he was 1 of the top 31 players in the draft.

Schmitz, a 2022 All-American, does “everything” well, Nagy said.
“He’s what you’re looking for in a center. He’s played a ton, he can handle it mentally, he’s a good communicator, he’s tough, he’s durable, he’s strong,” Nagy said. ” … He’s stronger than I thought he was watching him in person against really good people. He can really anchor, which I questioned a little bit on tape. So he’s got everything from the neck up, he’s played a ton of football, he’s gonna be able to help the quarterback a ton, you’re gonna be able to take a lot off the quarterback immediately.
“This guy’s ready to play … I think he’s a Day 1 starter and you’ve got a two-contract player that’s going to be a high-level player.”
Schmitz is a highly consistent zone-scheme center with decent size. He is well-schooled in all phases of the run game. He consistently uses the proper footwork and angles to find early positioning and has the tenacity to finish blocks at a high rate. He has plus football intelligence and makes the calls for his offense. His drive power is average and he can be hit-or-miss getting to second-level targets. Schmitz lacks length and his edges will get a little leaky in pass protection from time to time, but his overall technique and teamwork in the run game should create a plug-and-play opportunity in the pros.
John Michael Schmitz IOL, MINN
Height: 6-4, Weight: 301
Instant starter at center. Large but nimble. Reach blocks galore on his film. Recovery ability is there too. Not dominant but simply blocks everything. Fills a major need. (Chris Trapasso)
Johnson thought Schmitz was extremely smart and would do great with the line calls. I am guessing the Giants put a lot of stock in the mental part of playing center.
57. New York Giants: John Michael Schmitz, C, Minnesota
Big, thick and experienced, Schmitz (6-3 ½, 301) started 36 games over four seasons at center for the Gophers and guided one of college football’s most physical running games. Schmitz allowed just two sacks and three quarterback hits in the past three seasons. He was PFF’s highest-graded center, a first-team All-American and a finalist for the Rimington Trophy.
Minnesota’s offense used the zone read and often relied on a combination of zone and sweep runs. Schmitz is both physical at the point of attack and can pull when needed. He fits perfectly into the Giants offense and could start right away at center.

Your first rounder should be trying to hit a ceiling, no problem with the obvious and safe pick at the end of the 2nd. He's plug and play, this shouldn't drive your decision but shouldn't be overlooked either. He's a cheap Day 1 starter that shouldn't be bad at starting.
The scout had me at "He's a prick and will try to kill you on every
I wouldn't have believe you if you told me that the Giants would pass on Hyatt, Tillman and Mimms in RD-2, after going Banks in RD-1.
Seems more like a Gettleman, "see hole, plug hole" kind of pick.
Not at all….
I mean let’s start with NOT having a legit center on roster
Secondly, Schmitz had a first round grade by most. It was very good value. Center is an important position. How many times as bbi complained about pocket getting blown up up the middle. We plugged a huge hole yea but got a ton of value here….
Same here, but the big three were Avila, Tippmann, and Schmitz. Any of those three being available at 57 was a longshot. Giants were blessed to have one. You take Schmitz and watch him flourish and stabilize the Center position form Day 1.
with first 2 picks (aside from a true #1 WR). I’ll let you guys argue whether value matched with the need, but with that Philly DL we certainly need to get better in the interior OL
athletic upside as Sy says, but knows his assignments, is tough and intelligent, and pulls very well. The Giants like to run a lot of sweeps with Barkley.
But I am having a very, very hard time getting as worked up over it as some others in here. He was still a worthy selection and a borderline third rounder relative to where we were picking. We've gotten inverse spoiled picking so early in rounds in the past few years!
Other interior OL were going much earlier. Ones expected in the 3rd. So I don't believe JMS would have lasted.

No guarantee of that. This guy has to win a job. He could get Jones killed if you start him right away.
Agree. Certainly could have solidified the pick

Thank you
Thank you
Why would I doubt smart people making these decisions?

Do you watch the giants? Bredesen will start.

No he won’t. You don’t make this pick to have him as a backup.

I think Dabs will allow a real battle for the position.
They've needed to set a floor on the offensive line. This isn't a sexy pick, but this is a solid pick.
He would not have been. Houston just drafted a center & Denver was likely going to take Schmitz.
This right here..

Agree. Bredensen be the backup C/G
Because we've been trying to fix the offensive line since like 2010.

@JimNagy_SB
John Michael Schmitz rolls out of bed reaching frontside DTs.
There aren’t 31 better/cleaner prospects in this year’s draft.

Some? lol
Go back to April 24 and read the Y28 post with the Leonard article from the News … explains a lot. I’d attach but I don’t how. Lol
