Lawrence extends for 4 years per garafolo

Eric on Li : 5/4/2023 4:36 pm
Mike Garafolo @MikeGarafolo
The #Giants and DT Dexter Lawrence have agreed to terms on a four-year extension that makes him one of the highest-paid defensive linemen in the NFL, sources tell @RapSheet and me.

Another extension from GM Joe Schoen for a core member of the team.

I can only assume there's a restructure of this year's numbers that lowers his 2023 cap hit.

They fold this year into the new one - so basically a 5 year $102 mill contract.

Pretty much. His cap number will be lower than the $12.4M it was scheduled to be. Great job by Schoen, Brandon Brown, and the rest of the F.O. These are, dare I say, Eagles' types of moves.

My only critique of his play last year was the playoff game against the Eagles, but that O Line is no joke. I hope he has a better showing against them this year. But even if not, if he can recreate last year, he was so dominant....

T E A M.
This is the guy that stayed an extra year at Clemson (along with Christian Wilkens) because they wanted another shot at the championship and because they were having F U N.

He is enjoying the ride while it lasts and I think he believes in the future of the team.
Look at it this way; he is buying something with the money he may have given up by holding out longer.

Saquan, now it is your turn.
Dex should give Wink a really nice gift for making this possible.

He was a great Nose / DT at Clemson and I never understood the previous coaches moving him outside … it made zero sense. Anyway, thats history and the man got paid. Good things continue to happen.

No. You wait. Let him prove he can continue to stay healthy. Initiate talks during the season and if things are cool health and performance-wise, offer him an extension during the bye week like they did last season with Barkley.

He didn’t say it was a steal. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say most people thought the contract would be higher than it is. That’s all. Not everything requires an embellished contrarian response…

Probably one of the easier ones with him being a top of the market player and the market being set. Not that it's a huge difference in money but pleasantly surprised he came in under Payne. I think the additional leverage of the 5th year helped there.
The Right Stuff
ThomasG : 5/5/2023 8:52 am : link
Dex is a core player who stepped up his game last year and proved to this regime how he can be a consistent disruptor on the Defensive Line game after game.

Handing out contracts to obvious longer-term pieces like this is an example of what you do.
It’s nice to start keeping our guys for a change

I’m tired of signing FA that don’t pan out. I hated the long line of good DTs we lost to other teams over the years. We finally started to build the foundation of the team.

I couldn't disagree with this more.

First of all, what's the scenario where you're NOT trying to re-sign Andrew Thomas to a second contract? How bad would he have to be and/or how serious would your injury concerns have to be to even consider a future where AT is not the Giants' left tackle? I would say this sort of scenario carries extremely low probability of playing out, but obviously there's a greater than zero (but not by that much) chance if we're being honest.

Secondly, left tackle is not a position that is likely to have a market correction in terms of contract value. So the price for a very good to great left tackle is already established and will only go up from here. A year from now we could be looking at AAV approaching $30M for a great left tackle. And even if the AAV doesn't continue to climb at the same rate, it's not going to reverse and come back down - maybe, MAYBE, it remains static for a year if there are no other major contracts at that position.

So what we're left with, IMO, is a situation where the outcome associated with the greatest risk (i.e., a world where the Giants regret signing Thomas because they wish they didn't have him on the roster, due to either injury or performance) is extremely unlikely to occur, even with AT's injury history. And for any outcome other than that, there is a very low opportunity to have that translate into a cheaper contract. Playing it safe by waiting might actually be the riskiest move financially if the left tackle market continues to escalate.

All in all, what is gained by waiting other than the leverage that the 5yo and two subsequent franchise tags represent? IMO, that leverage already exists. The only reason not to sign Andrew Thomas to an extension right now is that his 4th year of his rookie contract is already so cheap that there aren't any cap savings to be had this year, so AT might just not be a priority until after the roster is set and the cap situation for 2023 is a bit more locked in. If Schoen is looking to create cap room this year, an extension for AT doesn't do that - that alone might put some other contracts ahead of AT in terms of the order in which the Giants address them.

But if you're just looking at the most economic long-term roster construction, taking care of Thomas sooner rather than later is the move, IMO.
Congrats

'Sexy Dexy' deal done quicker than I thought it would get done. The deal is similar to the one for Payne (both have the same agent), so that is not a big surprise at the same position. Now don't be foolish, and overspend to keep Barkley around here, let him play on the tag.

I would have to believe it's the latter.
I think they can get a deal done w/Barkley with an out after 2 years.
Optimus-NY : 5/6/2023 9:36 am : link
The NYG are going to be smart and deliberate with it. It's in the best interest of both sides. Barkley can get his guaranteed money and re-test the market again if he isn't happy after two years, or ride out the remainder of the deal. A 4 year type of deal would make a lot of sense with an out after two. This way the Giants could potentially have SB for all of his 20s (he's 26 now). Spotrac had a good article about it. Click HERE to read it.
