A quiet week at Jints Central- we fans have questions

Y28 : 5/13/2023 8:11 pm
Other than the Giants schedule being announced by the NFL, it’s been a quiet week at Giants Central. Perhaps too quiet, especially following the fan’s intense interest leading up to draft weekend and the rookie minicamp tryout.

As fans, we still have some questions. The OTAs start May 22nd, and I am hoping we get some clarification on these 10:

1. The CAP. This week the CAP ramifications following the long-term extension to Dexter Lawrence became clearer. Depending on the website you chose, it seems that the Giants now have between $5.6 to $5.9 million in available CAP space. That amount of CAP space leads to several options for the Giants. Spotrac is reporting that when the Giants sign their top 3 draft picks, the CAP hits will be as follows:

Deonte Banks $2,468,981
John Michael Schmitz $1,158,788
Jalin Hyatt $1,022,784
TOTAL $4,650,553

Those 3 signings will eat up most of the remaining current CAP. Several NFL teams have already announced that all of their draft picks are signed. These 3 don’t count on the 90-man roster limit until they sign, so the Giants have some flexibility, if the goal is to sign another veteran first. What will the order of signings be?

2. Tryout signings. What happened following the rookie minicamp? As fans, we waited to hear some news following the camp, but to date we have heard nothing. I saw almost a dozen attendees send tweets thanking the Giants for the opportunity. And since the mini camp, I have seen the names of at least six that were invited to other team’s mini camps this weekend. Poster “godeep13” reported that Giants administration was really pleased with the under-discussed players that our scouts had uncovered. At the start of the mini camp, the Giants roster was at 90. However, the 3 unsigned draft picks and Saquon Barkley don’t count. So, the Giants could have signed 4 tryout players with any other roster moves needed. With the OTA’s starting in 9 days, perhaps we will hear more, after the coaches and medical staff see the returning players (though it’s voluntary) and make decision related to who is best to fill the bottom of the roster.

3. Scout Vacancies. Speaking of scouts, the Giants currently have 3 openings for scouts. Several teams made official announcements this week to name their adjusted staff. We are still waiting to hear about who will be filling those 3 vacancies.

4. College Scouting Director. Since the Giants hired Joe Schoen, the position of College Scouting Director has been “vacant”. Is Ryan Cowden coming on board? How will the top of the Administration staff be aligned?

5. Tony Jefferson. When last season ended, several reporters indicated that Jefferson would be adding to his reported 212 pound weight, so that his position could change from safety to linebacker. It seemed apparent that he would be back. Yet since that chatter back in January, we haven’t heard any more about the 31 year old free agent. Is Jefferson in the Giants 2023 plans?

6. Inside Linebacker. When Deonte Jones met with the Giants in early April, it seemed to confirm that the Giants were interested in adding a veteran to battle with Darrien Beavers, Jarrod Davis, and Micah McFadden for the starting position next to Bobby Okereke. I have certainly mentioned the name Raashan Evans enough, and Zach Cunningham and Miles Jack are also looking for work. Will we hear next week about a veteran ILB joining the Giants on a vet minimum, or near vet minimum deal? Solid veterans like OT Billy Turner and FS Jonathan Owens have just signed similar deals with the Jets and Packers. Teams that couldn’t fill their team needs following the draft will reconsider the league veterans that remain unsigned.

7. Another veteran signing. Was there a position on the Giants that management hoped to fill during the draft, but could not? Is there a veteran free agent that the Giants think could fill a need on a one year deal? While the common discussion amongst fans is to add a veteran ILB, perhaps the Giants have their sites on another position to add a veteran.

8. Saquon Barkley- just today, we saw several reports that the Giants final offer to Barkley had incentives that could have resulted in $14 million annually. Why is this being reported now? Is either side “leaking information”? Clearly the Giants are in the drivers seat here. Schoen has said many times that he is comfortable having Saquon play on the TAG. Obviously, that is not what Barkley wants. The Giants don’t need a distraction with a top player. Is there room for a compromise and a multi-year deal, or will this draf on until the July TAG deadline?

9. Leonard William and Adoree Jackson- These are two Giants that are a large portion of the Giants 2023 CAP. Right now its not clear if either are in the Giants post 2023 plans. Do the Giants negotiate with either to reduce the 2023 CAP hit? Or will they be former Giants in 2024, with the Giants gaining 2025 Comp Picks when they depart?

10. Andrew Thomas- clearly the top OL, and a player the Giants want long term. The Giants created significant CAP space with the Dexter Lawrence signing. The Giants will need additional CAP space to navigate the long season. Rather than negotiating with Williams or Jackson, is the Giants goal to extend a player like Thomas, who they clearly want at LT for many years to come.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I think that last week's quiet week at Giants Central will be followed with a busy week, with fans getting some of these questions answered. Stay tuned.

awesome post. Thanks. Your questions are very thought provoking. I am especially interested in how Schoen will generate more cap room, which if any of the tryout players are signed, and what happens with Barkley, Williams, and Jackson.
Seriously, solid stuff Y..

I still see SB signed to a 3 year deal…

Question for anyone: Who was the FA we talked to after A’shawn’s first meeting? Never heard his name again..Totally blanking on his name.

When the remaining 3 draft picks are signed they won't count as much

as you think against the cap. The reason for that is because of the Top 51 Rule which is in effect now until a few days before the start of the regular season in September. Those three you listed (below) will displace salaries already in the Top 51:

Quote:
Deonte Banks $2,468,981
John Michael Schmitz $1,158,788
Jalin Hyatt $1,022,784
TOTAL $4,650,553

If you go to OverTheCap.com and click on the Giants' current team Salary Cap breakdown (HERE), you'll see what I mean.

Look at the cap numbers for the last three players in the Top 51:

Quote:
#49. Rodarius Williams - $983,284
#50. Micah McFadden - $958,926
#51. D.J. Davidson - $958,530
TOTAL: $2,900,740

What you do is subtract $2,900,740 from $4,650,553. That gives you $1,749,813. All that will count against the cap now if those three are signed is that amount of $1,749,813. The Giants have it now as a result of the Dexter Lawrence extension.

correction... I think we have TWO area scout vacancies. Blaise was promoted to an area scout, but we don't know what area (he is the third in your equation).

to say it, but the reporting on the team has been found wanting for a while now. It's almost as if the print media has given up.

Duggan is industrious. (His colleague Charlotte has the best after-game, in-season injury updates). Art still provides a lot of good content on Twitter. Ryan has some decent inside info. But we're at a different level than even just a few years ago.
Great thread.....Bobby Johnson podcast was encouraging

I am less concern about ILB.

The 3rd Edge is my biggest concern....which is a nice sign. Showing how impressive Schoen did this off season
