The 1984 film had its faults - I'm not a David Lynch fan at all - but I always felt he got royally screwed when DeLaurentis had him cut four hours of film down to two. It just made a bad situation worse, especially if you'd never read the books.
Many Directors could learn a thing or two from Denis Villeneuve. Respect the source material. Peter Jackson did, and he created the greatest trilogy since the original Star Wars. Villeneuve is cut from the same cloth.
