Peacock will exclusively carry NFL playoff game

HitSquad : 5/15/2023 10:31 pm
"The league and NBCUniversal announced Monday that the Saturday night game on wild-card weekend will be on Peacock.

The Peacock exclusive game Jan. 13 will start at 8:15 or 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on NBC stations in the markets of the two teams. It will also be available on mobile devices through the NFL+ package. It will be preceded by a late afternoon playoff game on NBC and Peacock that will kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but The Wall Street Journal reported that it's a one-year deal with the league receiving approximately $110 million."

Are we now officially on the road to having the playoffs (and maybe even the Superbowl) behind a pay wall?

If you have time and patience for it, great.

Again, if your issue is that setting yourself up so you can watch this game would require too much time and patience, there's clouds in the sky. If the game is paywalled, then sure, I get it - I wouldn't pay for it either. But it is an immaterial level of time and effort to add this to one's tv (assuming it's not a 1992 magnavox), let's not carry on about something that a child can do in under 3 minutes.
cool!

No one cares about change.

It's all going to lead to more money out of our pocket, one day soon. Fuck their free trial. Eventually, it's going to make them MORE MONEY and cost us MORE MONEY. Watch.

It's bullshit. And free trials can fuck the hell off too as one needs to be a fucking atom splitting engineer to figure out how to cancel.

I won't watch. Just like I don't watch the Yanks on prime, and I have prime. They can fuck off. Streaming sports fucking sucks.

From my POV, my rant is not because it's one playoff game. It's everything. Death by 1000 cuts.

It’s what everyone wanted

maybe not you specifically but the masses have been bitching about forced cable packages for years, decades even. Now it’s a la carte and it too is awful.

Streaming is great. Add/cancel anytime, can watch on any screen without hardware or running a cable line, can watch on the go, the picture quality is better, and you have a ton of variety to choose from. The cost can be a wash too, just depends on how much you want.
You're a dummy

if you don't realize sports is going to cost you even more of an arm and a leg on streaming.

I just hope the nfl doesn’t mess with that set up because it’s been pretty good for me. All games nonissue

to have all these different apps on the TV and to get billed for every service left and right. But I certainly do appreciate the new content of streaming services.

It's the changes made that don't benefit me that bother me, like the new You Tube Sunday Ticket. I already have DTV and almost every goddamn streaming service and now I need to get another one, just for NFL games & RedZone, and one that costs a lot more than the one I got for free by complaining to DTV about my bill thanks to you guys suggesting I do it !!!

The Peacock thing is pretty fucking annoying when we already have NBC/Sunday Ticket/Cable, etc

Think about it, get rid of your cable/satellite company which houses everything in one place (a la knowing the channel numbers) for subscribing to 8+ apps of which you have to open and then find what you're looking for or switch to the other app to find something...before you know it there will be 20+ apps these sporting events are on and such. It will come full circle one day back to everything being on one place like a cable box because dealing with 15 subscriptions and different apps with different interfaces is annoying.....

the plus side is that everything is on Roku. when i travel i just take my roku stick with me and i still have everything.

Goodell is an idiot. The NFL is this dominating singular cultural phenom because of the vision of leaders like The Duke, Tags and Rozelle, namely free, no barrier appointment TV.

Do you ever use it with a FireStick? I haven’t tried it since they converted to NFL+ but that’s what I was hoping to use this season

The other plus side is you can cancel any of them at any time and can view from any device, anywhere.

As for consolidating apps, that already exists within the UI. Just pick the app from the menu and off you go. All the interfaces are more or less the same in functionality - select Live TV and click on the game. It’s pretty much dummy proof. It’s also nice to know if the power ever goes out that I can still access from my phone instead of being SOL with cable.

I'm done watching my round of shows on Apple TV, so I cancelled last night. It literally took me like 3 clicks to remove the subscription. Extremely easy. Will be just as easy to re-activate when I'm ready to watch my shows again. What are you talking about?

I hate this idea
aimrocky : 5/17/2023 12:30 pm : link
and I'm not afraid of technology like many here. I understand free trials, but I don't want to put that effort into a playoff game.

I'm already financially overcommitted to the NFL (season ticket holder who purchased Sunday Ticket while living in the home market). I spend my entire Sunday consuming the NFL product, despite having a young family (we center our Sunday activities around the NFL celebration). When is enough enough? This...

I can sign up for a free trial, but I may just boycott this idea altogether to send my message, although I say that now and could change my mind if it ends up being a great matchup.
This is why marketing is evil

I'm not one who things everything about "the good old days" was perfect, but it was nice with advertiser supported football broadcast over the air. I know you still get those on sundays, but playoffs and superbowl used to be part of that as well.

Even if free, this would still be behind a "sign up wall" aka give us your personal information and let us track you.

I actually operate off the opposite logic. I'm a Spectrum subscriber (cost is not substantially higher than streaming services, and I get all of the RSN's). Spectrum has a fantastic app, that I use through out my house, besides in the main living room, where a cable box is still set up. Spectrum allows hardwire or cloud based service options for you main box, but I kept cable because internet outages happen more frequently than cable. The handful of times my internet has gone out, we have shifted to the main cable box for viewing.

Yes, I know I can watch on my phone, I just choose not to do that. The only time I watch TV is at home, and viewing on a small phone screen is not enjoyable to me.

Of these streaming services does the NFO expect fans to subscribe to?

Remember when the BBI threads of 5-10 years ago wanted cable gone, a la crate options, no contracts, etc? Well, now we are getting that and people still have an issue with it which I don’t get. Other than having multiple apps, which is all conveniently organized on your smart tv or device, what’s the issue?

You can sign up for any streaming service for a free trial then cancel, or pay for a month or two during the time you need it, and then cancel. I’m not seeing the issue unless you are someone that’s holding on to cable and doesn’t want to make the jump.

because you're just being upsold to different services. so instead of a cable monopoly controlling you, you have nfl pulling the strings by contracting out to all these streamers and you have to pay more for the same content plus still watch ads and manage the accts and who the f wants to do that. and you only get one free trial unless you f around with your ip or something. thats the jist as i see it.
I’m not worried about being upsold
UConn4523 : 5/17/2023 5:03 pm : link
since almost everything in every industry is an up sell. But I value flexibility over cost so streaming is better for me. If cost is your primary driver then you’ve got some decisions to make, to each their own.

The NFL is getting your money one way or another. If it isn’t your $5 from Peacock it’ll be somewhere else. And since they are getting the money either way Atleast you can now get the rest of what the service has to offer. In this case, Peacock is actually a great value at $5. There’s a number of good shows and they have an exclusive movie section - “Air” was just added yesterday, for example, along with a full movie library of other stuff.
