ESPN's Mike Clay recently ranked all 32 teams' interior defensive linemen, and coming in at the very top of the list was the New York Giants, led by Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams. ..... The group of Lawrence, Williams, Robinson, Nunez-Roches and Ryder Anderson ranked No. 1 on Clay's list. |
Fletcher Cox is the only one that concerns me on the Eagles until proven otherwise.
The potential of Jordon Davis and Jalen Carter is concerning....but they must make the same jump....that A.Thomas, D.Lawrence did and hopefully E.Neal will...
This jump is not easy. College studs means little in the pros. The Eagles have been hoping to replace Cox for years....
There was no interior depth last year. That's been fixed... no?

And MLB being weak. Dex was being doubled and the RB was beating the LB 1 on 1 again and again. When Dex was out his backups were put on roller skates. There was a reason that MLB was the big target in FA and they added the depth they did on the DL.
They are getting back some injured players and brought in re-enforcements.
Top 10, top 5 is doable.
My reaction as well.
Can't stop the run if you don't have Linebackers. Double Williams and Dex, squeeze through the hole, and no one is there because the RB blocked our crappy ILB
They added Nunez-Roches and Robinson, two players who excel in that role and can spell the starting DTs. The ability to stop the run was also largely on the weak middle LB unit last year as well. Okereke will be huge in that department
The linebacking play and edge setters were not good in run support, but ranking this interior DL overall #1 is lofty. Epecially seeing them get their butts pushed around in that Philly playoff game.

Has it? On paper, it should be better. Kenny Golladay was supposed to fix the WR problem. I don't believe anything is better until I see it being better.

Our backups on rollerskates would have been an improvement on our backups being one armed pancake blocked by Kelce.
Eagles are probably better than 18th but they did get run over the second half of the SB and they were not a upper tier unit last season. I think getting out to big leads earlier in games did mask some of the issues.
Williams playing with the neck issue had to be very problematic. Imagine playing that position with that issue.

It's projections. Should the Eagles be top with just Fletcher Cox and Milton Williams? Because neither Davis or Carter have proven anything.

100%. It's hard to overstate how poor the ILBs were last year. With any luck Beavers pans out too.
Interior pressure is the most effective defensive weapon and the most difficult to do consistently.
Stopping the run is of course important but it is secondary these days because nobody wins just by running the football. Plus if you blitz a lot you are going to get some big runs against you.

This is not true. Did you not watch the Eagles run all over the Giants in the playoffs? If the offense gets 5+ yards running on first down it makes a huge difference in terms of how effective they are.

Yes running alone is not going to chalk up a lot of W's. There was a big uptick in rushing yards last year and also pts. scored dropped a bit. These two things are connected.
Stopping the run gives you more opportunities to get after the passer in bad down/distance which leads to good things.

Stopping the run is always important, it's just that being elite at that without a pass rush won't win you big games. Without a certain level pass rush, you cannot win against good teams in this league.
But say being #1 against the run with a #5 pass rush, likely better than being #1 in pass rush and #15 run defense, even in modern game.
