Sy'56 Grades the 2020 NFL Draft

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/16/2023 2:31 pm
Giants tied for 12th:

12 (t): NEW YORK GIANTS / 0

HC: Joe Judge

GM: Dave Gettleman

Andrew Thomas earning an All-Pro honor at a premium position made up for a class that only produced one other sustainable starter out of nine selections. Darnay Holmes has been up and down from the start of his career but 11 starts (potentially and counting) at nickel from a fourth rounder presents good value. The misses along the offensive line have contributed to the grade flattening out overall and none of their five 6th/7th round picks exceeded expectations for sustainable time. Tae Crowder did see plenty of starts but he played his way on to the waiver wire before the end of year three.

1(4) Andrew Thomas – OT/Georgia

2(36) Xavier McKinney – S/Alabama

99(3) Matt Peart – OT/Connecticut

4(110) Darnay Holmes – CB/UCLA

5(150) Shane Lemieux – OG/Oregon

6(183) Cam Brown – LB/Penn State

7(218) Carter Coughlin – LB/Minnesota

7(238) TJ Brunson – LB/South Carolina

7 (247) Chris Williamson – CB/Minnesota

7 (255) Tae Crowder – LB/Georgia

Analysis of the 2020 NFL Draft - ( New Window )
That is a Really Good Draft
OntheRoad : 5/16/2023 2:45 pm : link
Andrew Thomas and Xavier McKinney are excellent

Darnay Holmes, Shane Lemieux, and Tae Crowder have all been starters. It is not their fault there were no better players on the roster.

Carter Coughlin and Cam Brown have both played and contributed.

The only dud was 7ᵗʰ rounder Williamson.

McKinney can be excellent - I think he will be.

But factually - he has started 29 out of 50 games since being drafted by a previous regime.
The Raiders that year...

I'd listen to the argument that this was one of the worst drafts of all time.
Sy, did you
section125 : 5/16/2023 3:22 pm : link
do 2019 grades? If you did I missed it last year.

Anyway, decent, not great draft. Mid level grade is warranted in my view.
Reading through all the teams picks
beatrixkiddo : 5/16/2023 4:05 pm : link
Just reinforces that the draft really is a crapshoot. Lucky to get two starters in a draft and maybe some rotational pieces here and there. Hope we hit on all our top 3 picks this draft, anything out of the OL backend for rotational or ST contributions would be gravy.
That was a weird dark forest
Spiciest Memelord : 5/16/2023 4:28 pm : link
Giants were in not remotely hitting on a 3rd round or later pick for years, year after year. I mean a monkey throwing darts could have done better, not sure if somebody intentionally trying to draft poorly could have done that bad.
That was a good draft.. Thanks to Sy!
edavisiii : 5/16/2023 4:30 pm : link
Very few teams go 7 for 7! Thanks Sy for keeping us in your loop. I am busy, I can't read 200 pages on the NFL Draft. Your articles are quick, to the point and your writing style is excellent. Enough details, a little sarcasm, a little humor...thrown in to keep it interesting! Plus looking back, your predictions and rankings are as good, if not better, than anyone.
The elephant in the room here
Chris684 : 5/16/2023 4:30 pm : link
Is that many of the important Dave Gettleman draft picks are turning into 2nd contract players for NYG including the QB. Not an endorsement of the guy, just an observation.

In fairness though, I felt that 2020 was the first year that DG was stripped of a lot of his power so to speak. I think Judge owns the successes and failures of the 2020 and 2021 drafts.
Thanks to Eric as well!
edavisiii : 5/16/2023 4:31 pm : link
You do a great job of moderating and keeping things in their perspective. I will be sure to offer support when the time comes!
Did you see the re-draft from Bleacher Report?

Giants take Jefferson at #4.

Jags get Thomas at 9 and Vikings take Xman at 22

I was going to say TJ Brunson never saw playing time but he did have 3 tackles in 2020. I have no memory of the giants drafting him though.

7 WRs, 4 CBs and 3 Safeties in the top 25 redraft.

That really shows where the game is going
If you're only going to get 2 picks right

I'd like it to be the first 2.

AT & Xavier are good pros, with AT being a stud.

Peart has been a whiff.
Going to work on 2019 soon

DG and Judge really blew off the 6th and 7th round. Judge wanted to
Ivan15 : 5/16/2023 8:34 pm : link
Prove he was really good at assembling special teams. In my mind, Coughlin was the only player with fill-in starter potential.

Peart was the big disappointment in that draft class. It looks like the Giants will give him one more chance to salvage his career.

I think Lemieux has won the opening day starter job all 3 years, only to lose the job due to injury 2 out of 3 seasons. There is still room for him on the roster if he can keep from getting injured.
I think it was a solid draft
Lines of Scrimmage : 5/16/2023 9:06 pm : link
but there is a very special aspect to this draft that tilts it to good imv.

Andrew Thomas represents the first upper tier OL drafted by Giants since 2004 (Snee). That is mind blowing to me but explains the root cause of most of the long standing offensive issues.

I agree with the poster above regarding Lemieux and also with the other poster with Judge having a big say in special teamers.

ryanmkeane : 5/16/2023 10:26 pm : link
Holmes: real solid value in the 4th. At least the guy attempts to be out there every Sunday and makes plays. It’s a shame Love didn’t last here as that’s another solid 4th rounder.

ryanmkeane : 5/16/2023 10:28 pm : link
Peart might go down as one of the softest OL ever drafted by the Giants. To get absolutely zero from that slot in the draft is awful. Similar to Reese drafts when the 3rd round was essentially a dart throw.
And that is why…

people melting down over the eagles drafts need to get a grip.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would take Chase Young, who has one foot firmly in "bust" territory right now (injuries notwithstanding) over Andrew Thomas, who is looking like a cornerstone, perennial All-Pro at a marquee position.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that post was sarcasm...at least I hope so.
it was a 6 or 7 way tie for 12th
fkap : 5/17/2023 9:09 am : link
which puts the draft at middle of the pack. Didn't suck, but not exactly jump for joy. 2 rock solid hits, and a bunch of lunch pail picks (which are necessary).

Terrible article. Chase Young wouldn’t be picked over Thomas and Wirfs.

Bleacher report is garbage, probably written by a crappy AI. I wouldn't even take Jefferson over AT, a stud LT is much much harder to find.
Player Development and coaching
FanMan : 5/17/2023 11:40 am : link
Is it fair to say that prior coaching staffs have also failed miserably in coaching up any of the round 3 and lower picks. So there was the triple whammy of missing on picks, missing on FA signings and failure to develop lower round talent. Great recipe for success. Oy vey.
