Saving face is the biggest hurdle

The Giants were willing to offer Barkley above market rate....

But his side turned it down.

Very curious to see if the Giants are willing to return offer to the table.

Which is probably 4 million over going RB rate.

But due to Barkley position on team....might be worth it.
Thank you.

Joel Corry an Andrew Brandt are two of my favorites. Any time I had questions they helped me out on my cap blog. Intelligent and kind gentlemen.
Really good overview
Reale01 : 5/17/2023 11:25 am : link
My comments based on what I heard and knew before.

Team Barkley will see 22 million gtd for two years as the absolute floor. (That is two franchise tags).

The Giants will want at least three years of control and maybe four to spread cap hit.

I think something like 4 years 50 million with 25 million gtd and 16 million signing bonus will get it done.

Salary
3 million (GTD) Cap 7
6 million (GTD) Cap 10
10 million Cap 14 Dead 8
15 million Cap 19 Dead 4

This would mean a possible release renegotiate year 3 and certain release renegotiate in year 4. AAV 12.5

That would seem to be reasonable

if he would get his head out of his ass. He ain't getting 17 million per. If his agent is continuing to push for that, he should FIRE her.

They did not talk about two of the most important points regarding Barkley negotiations: 1) That the $12 franchise number for next year cannot be assumed due to risk of injury and poor performance, $22 million guaranteed now is better than that. and 2) Signing Barkley before DJ meant the Giants could have used franchise tag on DJ in his negotiations. Barkely rejected an above market deal for him and that cost the Giants $ in deal with DJ. I do not blame Giants for letting him sit and wait. He wants $22 million guaranteed on franchise tags? Great. Be healthy and have a great 2023. After 2024 he will have played 7 years. What will he be worth then?

My comment and suggestion were based on what it would take to get it done IMO. You are correct - the 22 million is NOT a given, BUT I think (and Corey said) Team Barkley is likely to consider that the floor and will not sign for less than that. Good point in that the Barkley refusal likely cost the Giants money on the Jones deal. One reason that they COULD offer less, the question is how much less and is it really worth it?

I did not mention it in my original post - but playing time incentives could be an important part of the contract - possibly pushing him to or a little above the 12.5 million mark if he meets them.

Right. Getting Barkley to sign and retaining the ability to tag Jones both had value, but now that value has been reduced.
Joel Corry gave a lengthy analysis of the information available
Marty in Albany : 5/17/2023 9:42 pm : link
Unfortunately, Corry said there was not enough information available (especially about how much $ was guaranteed in the Giant original offer) for him to make a prediction as to what Barkley would do: sign a new contract, play under the tag(s) or somehow take less money to play somewhere else.

Based on this interview, my guess is that we won't know anything before it happens unless someone on the Giants leaks some information. It appears that Barkley's side is wisely keeping their collective mouths shut.
