NFT: Air Purifiers

Anakim : 5/17/2023 10:46 am
Do you have any recommendations? With the weather change, I've been sneezing up a storm and my nose is running like a marathon. I have a large Hunter Tower air purifier, but the filters need to be changed every 3-6 months and the filters can be pretty costly.

Any you recommend? I don't mind the price so long as it's very low-maintenance (i.e. you don't have to clean it often and/or you don't need to change the filters and pay $50-$100 for replacements). Any self-cleaning, non-replacement ones out there that you just leave alone indefinitely?
You’re asking the impossible

Air purifiers filter dirt, pollen , etc out of the air. That stuff gets trapped in the filter. Expecting not to have to clean or replace the filter is not reasonable.

bought a top of the line one a few years back and returned it. Saw very little change, if any and didn’t seem worth it at all. You basically need to operate it in a bubble for it to be effective.

Removed from the market years ago because it didn’t clean the air and in fact polluted the air with ozone.

large room air purifier. Bought it to alleviate pollen allergies. Totally worthless...didn't improve my condition even a single bit. Waste of $700. Will eventually sell it to recoup something.
We have multiple in our home

Amaircare is great. We have another one made by Austin Air that is great as well. When you walk out of a room where you have one of these running you will literally notice a difference in the air immediately in terms of it smelling like dust.

The cheap Honeywell ones are crap even if they claim they are HEPA filters.

Yeah, I figured. Shot in the dark that something like that existed.

The Austin Air models have filters that last 5 years.

This brand was recommended to us last year to send our son up to school with. It seems to work well and can be cleaned.

Anakim - You can't leave them indefinitely. You have to at least clean the filter.
Build your own

It's cheaper and works much better. My ex is allergic to cats. We put one in the living room and the bedroom. The allergies were basically gone. The trick is to ensure that the tape is airtight to force air into the filters, and to buy at least merv 13 filters. I'll link cheap merv 13 filters from amazon. The box fan should be about 20 inches. I haven't found an extremely energy efficient one yet like some vornad0 fans.

The filters are good for 6 month. Set up subscribe and save and you are good. I can't stress how well this works and it's significantly cheaper than any other option... that doesn't work nearly as well.
