Given that they have not won since 1986, you would think there would be some humility.
But instead, there is this know-it-all-attitude
Vientos CANNOT play the OF!!!But Dom Smith did. Kevin Mitchell did. Dave Kingman did. Hell, even Todd Hundley did.
Alvarez defense is NOT READY!!! But a study of the Eastern League showed he was the best pitch framer. Scherzer said his defense was fine and he had no problem throwing to him. But No! The Mets experts say he is not ready. Then he comes up and if anything is a plus defender.
Vientos can play LF. Because anybody can play LF. Maybe not longterm or really well but for a season or few months. He absolutely can. Anyone who has ever played even HS baseball knows that if you give a guy reps, he will be passable in LF.
Here are the SPs for both clubs today along with the Starting lineups:

Agreed. Why not cross-train Mauricio in the corner OF positions as well as 2B since those are where he'll fit best in the majors?

They tried him ion LF last year and it was a complete disaster. Those that saw him said he took the worst routes to the ball they had ever seen from a player. I think Im good with him at DH, 1B, and maybe once in a blue moon 3B for now.

Mauricio has never played the OF in his entire life. He only just got moved off of SS to 2B ( much easier transition). The Mets (and scouts) still believe there is some rawness in his game both offensively and defensively. I think it's best he continues to mature with the bat and get as comfortable as he can in the field where he's at. We do not need him learning an entirely foreign position in-season IMO. We also dont even need him to play LF. McNeil should move to LF permanently next year IMO.
His game is indeed raw, as Zgiants pointed out. Let him work on defense. If he stink in the OF, then so be it. Let him play there and improve on occasion. If he continues to stink, then DH/2B it is.

Thanks E. That makes sense. Does Nidon't have any options remaining?
no they extended him cheaply in the offseason but no options
pete's line drive was anohter 99mph, xba 380. some bad luck so far for him in this one.
on that walk i think pham has a higher OPS than our starting corners.
Thanks Eric. So what happens to Nido once he's back and Narvaez returns some time in June? They can't possibly send Alvy down now? Nido would have to go.

that's the question. they said they are going to take it slow with nidos rehab and narvaez is still several weeks away so i think it depends on how alvarez plays. if he hits more he will stay up if he hits less probably goes down. stays the same who knows? seems somewhat telling they hit vientos in front of him day 1.
nido's salary is just high enough he may not get claimed if they try to send him down. especially with the eye issue.
sanchez adds another wrinkle if he comes up for perez and plays well in the few weeks before nido/narvaez get back.
It would be appalling to send Alvarez back down. Especially, with how well he's handled the pitching staff. Sanchez needs to be activated by Friday. Perez and Nido are almost assuredly gone soon. Perez probably demoted and Nido DFA'd. I guess the best they can hope for is for Sanchez to look decent so they can flip him to another team before Narvaez returns.
the only reason alvarez should go down is if he gets outhit clearly
nido can't do that but narvaez and/or sanchez could.
right now alvarez' defense has been very good but his offense has not been good. his avg exit velocity is 85 mph, his xba is .195, his xslg% is .308. he is k'ing 29% walking 8%.
remember in AAA he only had 16 at bats and 4 hits this year. last year on the season he hit .234 at AAA in 45 games. he's 2 full years younger than baty/vientos.
he should get every chance to prove himself on the strong side for the next few weeks and he should get the strong side until narvaez outplays him. if sanchez comes up and hits or if alvarez slumps worse there may be a viable reason to send him down. i dont think there's a clear answer on what's best for him or the team yet.
that one had a .300 xba so not as big of a robbery as it looked at first glance. but that's 3 hard hit balls with a greater than 30% chance of being hits all converted to outs by tampa.
and we're pinch hitting vogelbach against a lhp w/ tying run on 2nd
the annnouncers pointed out on the Raley K just now what a good job Alvarez did on framing that one. It was a low pitch and he had his glove above it and pulled it up. Got a strike. Interesting to see another team’s announcers perspective on his D
but it's hard to watch this game and not feel disadvantaged. since the end of last year when he started making bizarre comments about players it has felt like he simply lost it a little bit. that's continued with his litany of comments about the young players he's clearly been reluctant to play despite obvious abilities.
tonight the bizarre lineup, the pinch hit decision with vogelbach, and tampa taking them to school on the base paths is just watching this team give away free outs and free bases to a better team.

he did his job and walked. how can you let him run here and leave an easy out on the base paths even if he isn't the tying run you still need to get him across.
I kind of associate high exit velocity with a hard hit ball, and I've never associated a pop-up to short CF with a hard hit ball. You're mileage varies obviously. All good...

im with you, exit velocity on every at bat is new and i was also surprised to see a number like that on a ball that looked like a ho-hum fly ball. clearly he's got a lot of juice in his bat and that could translate to making a real big impact.

Yeah I agree...but that ball was sky high.
One thing that doesn't make sense to me is how Pets projected distance was shorter than Alvarez.. ball actually went further in the stadium and had a much higher exit velocity. I see Acuna hitting like 460 foot HRs.. how was Petes only 416?
RE: RE: Pete's being interviewed now in front of his locker.
pete's numbers at dh speak for themselves. buck said he's been sick the last few days and probably shouldnt be playing, which has no doubt happened a lot the last few years but they cant score without him so he can never sit.
time to take the training wheels off and fully invest in the kids. vogey, pham, escobar, canha, marte can play for the final 2 spots and earn their at bats.
and remember tonight a month from now when there's a legitimate reason to consider promoting mauricio. or who knows maybe even tomorrow if marte needs an IL trip. you know when i wouldnt mind vogey at dh? when this is the lineup vs a rhp:

hopefully marte/canha get it together but theres a chance they dont.
and next year we may need dh for our ace.
Don't forget about Nidon't. He belongs on that list of players fighting it out for the last few roster spots. Mets are gonna need to make some trades, of for no other reason other than addition by subtraction. I think they could get something in return for Vogelbach. Nothing like they gave up of course, but something still. Nidon't and Mehscobar are a different kettle of fish, but maybe something for Escobar if they eat some of his salary.
im not even sure he's going to get a chance unless narvaez has a setback or someone else gets injured.
not trying to make too much of 1 game/1 homer but the way alvarez threw the ball that entire game and the reality of where his body of work is, plus the homers that will presumably start coming with more frequency, i just dont see him going back down again unless he totally falls on his face.

Yup, re: Alvy. Nidon't can take a hike for all anyone cares. DFA his @$$. Good riddance.
Heading into his at-bat in the bottom of the 9th inning, Francisco Álvarez thought back to his appearance against Josh Hader earlier this season and vowed to perform better this time up

Francisco Álvarez on what it means to play alongside Mark Vientos and Brett Baty in the majors
1.) Nimmo CF
2.) Lindor SS
3.) Baty 3B
4.) Alonso 1B
5.) Vientos DH
6.) McNeil 2B
7.) Alvarez C
8.) Canha LF
9.) Marte RF
I like it, but I'd like it even more if we call up Mauricio. Play him at 2B, move Mcneil to LF and let Canha be first guy off the bench.
There's a bit too much of a roster crunch going on at the moment. We very well might see that later on this season, but I think it'll have to wait at least month or so until after the catcher situation sorts itself out. By then, both Nido and Narvaez will have returned and a decision would have been made about who's going where. Sanchez and Perez will hold the fort for another week or so until Nidon't returns---expect Sanchez to be up tomorrow for Perez.
The Mets won't carry three catchers. Either Alvy goes down (doubtful at this point) OR Nidon't gets traded or DFAd once Narvaez comes back in early to mid June. Then it's a matter of what to do with Vogey and Escobar. Keep in mind that Luis G in a holding pattern at Triple A Syracuse now. Canha or Pham might be trade candidates as well. It's not a simple fix anymore.
1.) Nimmo CF
2ientos DH
6.) McNeil 2B

I think McNeil is too good a hitter to be hitting that low. I think McNeil is the ideal 2-hole hitter (with righty starting pitcher).
Here's what I'd like to see:
VS. LHP
1. Nimmo CF
2. Marte RF
3. Lindor SS - *Struggling this year, but does have .891 OPS vs LHP in 2023
4. Alonso 1B/DH
5. McNeil 2B
6. Vientos DH/1B/3B
7. Canha/Pham LF
8. Alvarez C
9. Baty/Escobar 3B/DH
Vs Righties:
1. Nimmo CF
2. McNeil 2B
3. Vientos 3B/DH (I'm trusting what my eyes tell me)
4. Alonso 1B
5. Baty 3B/LF
6. Lindor SS
7. Vogelbach DH / Canha LF when Baty at 3B and Vientos at DH
8. Alvarez C
9. Marte RF
May seem strange with Vientos hitting 6th vs lefties and 3rd vs righties...but I love Vientos hitting behind McNeil, and I love his RBI potential vs any pitching. Lindor is too good to continue to struggle against right-handed pitching. After Baty hitting 5, I like how the lineup sets up against RHP with Lindor-Vogey-Alvarez... can see Alvarez getting a lot of opportunities to drive in runs, and then Marte having an opportunity to be that turn lead-off guy at the 9-hole.
There's no way we're going to see the young guys high up in the order any time soon, but if I'm making a prediction, it's that Vientos is going to eventually be one of the most feared 3-hole hitters in baseball.
day on the farm so I didn't bother with a full summary but-
Tidwell continues to struggle with his command... an understatement

another rough outing for Atencio. He’s been a sleeper for many of us since before last season. Era now stands at 11.09. I could see him sent to the complete league next month if he doesn’t turn it around
in Taj Bradley, and Buck is going to bench Vientos in favor of Vogey, even though Vientos just hit a game-tying homerun off a RHP last night and has a 1.129 OPS vs righties at AAA this year.
Fucking genius.
How long is it going to take Buck to understand Vientos is not a platoon hitter?
But you know, it's important we get Escobar in the lineup with his .547 OPS vs RHP this year in the lineup. That's awesome.
Tommy Pham, too. .542 OPS vs RHP this year.
If you want Vogey in the lineup vs RHP, fine. Baty in LF and Vientos at 3B. Problem solved. Live with Baty in LF for awhile.
It's becoming VERY hard to argue against the fact that Buck STRONGLY favors veterans to the point it will become a ?? if he should be the guy leading what will likely be an increasingly young team in the next 2-3 seasons. Maybe he adjusts his mindset? One has to hope.

Bingo, and I like Buck for the most part. No excuse to have Pham and Escobar in there, but no Vientos. If this crap continues, it is pretty clear Buck is not the right man for the job. The front office needs to also direct Buck. I'm not one for the front office meddling in managerial decisions, but they need to tell Buck the kids need to play

Gary Sanchez can opt out from his minor league deal with the Mets tomorrow. One possibility the Mets are strongly weighing is asking Sanchez to extend another 10 days before a decision is reached.

I don't care if it's a lefty.
If Buck platoons Baty and Vientos and just keeps playing Pham and Vogelbach then having them up here is just a waste.

He's supposedly a better LF than 3B.
1-7 going forward for the next month has to be some combo of the top 4 and the 3 kids.
go out and win the series against the best team in baseball tomorrow - with the 3 kids in the lineup - and then go from there.
Baty LF/3B
Mauricio 3B/SS/2B
Vientos 3B, 1B, DH
Alvarez C, DH
Definitely could pay dividends later.

Let's hope so!
im with you, exit velocity on every at bat is new and i was also surprised to see a number like that on a ball that looked like a ho-hum fly ball. clearly he's got a lot of juice in his bat and that could translate to making a real big impact.
2.) Lindor SS
3.) Baty 3B
4.) Alonso 1B
5.) Vientos DH
6.) McNeil 2B
7.) Alvarez C
8.) Canha LF
9.) Marte RF
2.) Lindor SS
3.) Baty 3B
4.) Alonso 1B
5.) Vientos DH
6.) McNeil 2B
7.) Alvarez C
8.) Canha LF
9.) Marte RF
Lindor should be 7th or 8th. No way a guy with OBP of .300 should be batting 2nd

Yeah. Good luck with that. The 363 million dollar man aint batting 8th.
Perez at C, Alvarez at DH, Vientos at 1B would be pretty sweet. Give Alonso a blow.

I kind of associate high exit velocity with a hard hit ball, and I've never associated a pop-up to short CF with a hard hit ball. You're mileage varies obviously. All good...

He looks visibly tired and has got the sniffles. I wonder if he starts tomorrow at 1B in ehat will be an early game (1:10 pm start ET).

Sounds about right. Here are tomorrow's starting pitchers:

time to take the training wheels off and fully invest in the kids. vogey, pham, escobar, canha, marte can play for the final 2 spots and earn their at bats.
and remember tonight a month from now when there's a legitimate reason to consider promoting mauricio. or who knows maybe even tomorrow if marte needs an IL trip. you know when i wouldnt mind vogey at dh? when this is the lineup vs a rhp:
nimmo
lindor
mcneil rf
pete
vientos 3b
baty lf
alvarez
vogey dh
mauricio 2b
hopefully marte/canha get it together but theres a chance they dont.
and next year we may need dh for our ace.

Don't forget about Nidon't. He belongs on that list of players fighting it out for the last few roster spots. Mets are gonna need to make some trades, of for no other reason other than addition by subtraction. I think they could get something in return for Vogelbach. Nothing like they gave up of course, but something still. Nidon't and Mehscobar are a different kettle of fish, but maybe something for Escobar if they eat some of his salary.
not trying to make too much of 1 game/1 homer but the way alvarez threw the ball that entire game and the reality of where his body of work is, plus the homers that will presumably start coming with more frequency, i just dont see him going back down again unless he totally falls on his face.

Yup, re: Alvy. Nidon't can take a hike for all anyone cares. DFA his @$$. Good riddance.
Francisco Álvarez on what it means to play alongside Mark Vientos and Brett Baty in the majors
this doesnt feel like a win as much as the beginning of a new era.
"We grew up through the system with each other. We're basically brothers." Mark Vientos on playing with Brett Baty and Francisco Álvarez - ( New Window )
Great point! I really feel this as well.
Really hope these guys do indeed feed off each other. Now put them in spots in the lineup where they can do more damage!

I like it, but I'd like it even more if we call up Mauricio. Play him at 2B, move Mcneil to LF and let Canha be first guy off the bench.
He still passes the eye test to me.

Who needs players who can actually play?
No way! I'm really getting sick of this guy.
at their word that Alvarez is dinged (and I'm sure he's tired) but Vientos? WTF Buck?
Dirty Sanchez 1-2, and HBP twice.
Tidwell continues to struggle with his command... an understatement
Jett the Met on base twice yesterday, also collected his 9th SB
another rough outing for Atencio. He’s been a sleeper for many of us since before last season. Era now stands at 11.09. I could see him sent to the complete league next month if he doesn’t turn it around
Parada went 1-for-4 with a 2B and HBP
Fucking genius.
How long is it going to take Buck to understand Vientos is not a platoon hitter?
Buck Showalter on why Mark Vientos is not in the lineup today for the Mets:
But you know, it's important we get Escobar in the lineup with his .547 OPS vs RHP this year in the lineup. That's awesome.
Tommy Pham, too. .542 OPS vs RHP this year.
If you want Vogey in the lineup vs RHP, fine. Baty in LF and Vientos at 3B. Problem solved. Live with Baty in LF for awhile.
Buck Showalter on why Mark Vientos is not in the lineup today for the Mets:
Outside of being a veteran, no he isn't. Eppler should go all Billy Beane and trade every veteran so Buck HAS TO play young players.

It's becoming VERY hard to argue against the fact that Buck STRONGLY favors veterans to the point it will become a ?? if he should be the guy leading what will likely be an increasingly young team in the next 2-3 seasons. Maybe he adjusts his mindset? One has to hope.

Except Eppler seems to be a major part of this problem as well.

What is this? A menu? Buck is a stubborn mofo. Cohen needs to step in and check him.

Agreed. You're being reasonable though. Buck won't be satisfied.
