Starting Lineups and Starting pitchers for today's game

Notes:
-Pete's playing today despite being sick and is at 1B instead of DH (thought Buck might rest him after last night)
-Pham's in LF and McNeil's in RF
-Marte is resting and Bucks has---surprise, surprise---left Vientos out of the lineup.
-Alvarez is resting today with Perez getting the start at Catcher.
-Escobar is at 2B again.
-At least Baty's in the lineup today...

of right now they have decided Baty and Vientos will platoon at 3b. Quite the way to develop young players.

I agree but I will say this

I feel that when you just DH you don't nearly get into the game as much as you would if you were playing at a position.

So the logic is that it's better to not have them in the game at all vs get the experience of DH?

So you keep marching up trash instead of letting a rookie get swings?
Major league at bats are major league at bats

So play them in LF and 3B. Even if this was a valid reason (it’s not) there’s a simple solution.

The levels of stupidity they are willing to go to on these lineup constructions tell us all we need to know and there is no justification. They are wrong. They have been wrong for weeks if not months if not for an entire year on Vientos. This wasn’t 1 lucky homer, he averaged 93mph exit velo in his half assed role last year, had 3 balls over 100 in his first game up, hit a game tying homer in what to that point was a shut out and the biggest win of the year.

If he didn’t play yesterday do they win their biggest win of the year? Has tommy Pham helped them win a game all year in like 20 starts?
Another ball crushed for Pete...
moze1021 : 5/18/2023 2:08 pm : link
wouldn't it be nice to have another RH hitter with that kind of power in the lineup today?
.
DanMetroMan : 5/18/2023 2:11 pm : link
Low upside move but I expect teams to check in on Michael Lorenzen. 3.80 FIP in 2023 averaging nearly 6 innings per start. FA after the season

Giolito please

And Aroldis Chapman

Where are the fans
allstarjim : 5/18/2023 2:17 pm : link
Need to chant "Mark VEE-EN-TOSE" EVERY HOME GAME.

Followed by: "FIRE BUCK"

Loudly.

If Vientos truly gets platooned with Baty, then this is a fire-able offense, IMO.

Cohen needs to hear it loud.
Megills line looks good is he pitching well or getting lucky?

I'd be surprised if the Mets go after Chapman with his domestic violence stuff (also quit in the Yankees last season

"Yankees reliever Aroldis Chapman has been ruled out for the American League Division Series after he skipped a mandatory workout, leading to a fine and likely ending the All-Star's seven-year tenure with New York"

I could be wrong
Halfway into game they have 4 hard hit balls as a team in 17 pas
Eric on Li : 5/18/2023 2:24 pm : link
Same number Vientos had in game 1.

The 4 are Alonso, Nimmo, Lindor, baty.

Almost like ev correlates with who the good hitters are. Bottom of the lineup is 1/8 a day after it hit 2 game tying homers to get team to extras.
Eppler probably agrees with Buck's sentiment
moespree : 5/18/2023 2:27 pm : link
Those now unnamed "markers" he talked so much about in spring start to make sense. Playing one or multiple positions. They just don't see Vientos having much value as a DH.

Why? Who knows. I don't understand what either of them are doing anymore.
Megill
DanMetroMan : 5/18/2023 2:27 pm : link
has looked solid but the weak contact, meh. 3 balls have been hit 102+ and 6 95+. Bradley for comparisons sake has allowed 3 95+. Obviously I'll take this Megill performance each time out.

They're the problem, not Vientos. Buck might not be here next year at this rate. Hire Stearns or Cherington this off-season. Eppler can go recruit Ohtani and then go back to being locked up in a room with typewriters and other archaic automata.

Update on Nationals - Marlins game
allstarjim : 5/18/2023 2:33 pm : link
Eury Perez, making his 2nd MLB start, just removed to start the 6th inning after 78 pitches (48 strikes). His line: 5 IP, 3 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 1 ER (solo HR allowed).

Another really strong start for the phenom. Other than getting touched by the long ball, he has been pretty impressive. Right now he's in line for the Win as Miami leads 3-1 going to bottom of the 6th.

Perez is a defensive stud.

AND he hits better than Nidon't. What's the point of having Nidon't on this roster again? They may as well DFA him now. Start making examples of these vets who can't cut it.

The Sanchize is 1-4 with a BB and K for @SyracuseMets, Mauricio 0-4, BB, K #Mets
Here's the line so far today for Tylor:
Optimus-NY : 5/18/2023 2:46 pm : link
-79 pitches (48 strikes)
-21 batters faced
-6 I.P.
-4 H
-2 R (2 ER)
-1 BB
-4 K
-1 HR
-ERA 3.88

Would be nice to get him the win today if the Mets can score in the 6th. I'd be afraid of bringing him back for the 7th. He seems to peter off after 80 pitches. The way he's going today, I'd risk it, but the pen needs to be ready.
Little dribbler to 3rd

wouldn't bring him in for the 7th. He's a 5 inning guy and his command was already wonky in the 6th. He did a commendable job vs. the best team in baseball but 8 HH balls. Be happy with what he gave and pull him.

For the second straight day a Triple-A Syracuse Mets pitcher has been ejected following a sticky substances check.

Today it's reliever Eric Orze. The right-hander was ejected as he was coming into the game.

Not watching but tampas xba is .305 (Mets is .225) so it would seem like they got a little luck. Hopefully bp can get through it.

He was outstanding last outing... which of course makes it less likely he'd be moved. St. Louis is suddenly playing well so I have feeling they hold onto both he and Montgomery. That being said, they should have their eyes on all potential SPing.

The only team ahead of them now are the Marlins. The Mets' biggest enemies are themselves at this point (I mean management and Buck). Play and support the kids because they provide the team with the best chance to win. This isn't the time for ego trips or insecurity.

To be sitting only 6 back of Atlanta right now with all that has happened is pretty fortuitous. That said, I’m still going to be looking wildcard with this team rather than the division. That’s where my expectations are at the moment.
