NFT: RATS!!! (Again)

Grey Pilgrim : 5/19/2023 4:30 pm
Hey,

So I've got Rats in my Garage again.

These are crafty buggers. I baited a conventional trap with Peanut Butter and the rat ate all of it without triggering the trap.

:amazing:

Trying a new one (linked). Any suggestions for baits?

TIA

I had the same problem
double anchovies : 5/19/2023 4:44 pm : link
with conventional traps. I wound up gently squeezing the catch with a pliers so the trap would spring more easily. It took a bit of doing to get it so it would just hold the trap in place but it worked every time after that.

Good luck with this - maybe the new traps will work better.
Thanks DA

Will give it a try.

Thank you.

I also had a Jack Russell once. Champion ratter. But she's passed on and cats can get to places even dogs can't.

that looks like the bucket of death. I have done that with a ramp and i put a little peanut butter up the ramp to the lip of the bucket and then the beer can with peanut butter all over it, and eradicated 30+ chipmunks.

maybe the rats need that "plank", the mice/chipmunks do not.

work great. I don't even have to bait them. Different brands come in different sizes. I use these for small mice.

Stretch it out good. Put something on ends to keep it Stretch out.Make sure at least one side is up to the wall or garage door. Now put down those large rat glue boards. I caught 8 doing this
Are they rats or mice

Field mice are common but rats might be a sign of some other issue that needs dealing with

and get them with the 22 with night vision. Unless you are in close proximity to neighbors which would make that a poor choice lol.

You don't need a 22 for rats. An air rifle is more than enough. I shoot animals in the yard from my bathroom window - drives my wife crazy, but it's fun and I only shoot rodents (who do damage to my garden).

Creating a gauntlet for the trap path
MeanBunny : 5/20/2023 3:28 pm : link
You want to funnel the rat into a tight space and make a hard turn so the rat can't jump backwards so you need to have the trap sprung light and in a box or some top container that is tall enough so that when the wire comes down it doesn't touch the box. I also have a few freebie crumbs in the path as the rat comes down the death gauntlet. The gauntlet can be made with 2x4s or bricks or whatever so it's inviting on the way in that gets tighter and tighter until it gets to the chamber and then if you can make the trap be at perpendicular to the gauntlet than the rat has to make a hard turn sniffs around at the trap when the trap comes down on him he may try the jump back but he hits the back wall. Good luck these things are pain
Limit access from back and sides

I also forgot to mention that the rat will try to come at it from the sides or the back that's why I have the box

Seeds work well too.

Sunflower or peanuts, crush them up and leave some freebees. First day or two put them on the trap without it set. Let them get comfortable with it. The advice about a death funnel which gives them only 1 way to approach the trap is right on.

Also attaching the song Rats by Clutch, because.

+1

you have to seal up the garage. Otherwise, you will spend the rest of your life trapping them.

Rats don't need a reason, and they can make their own access. *grin*

Tough SOB's.

I've dispatched at least 100 over the last few years. We live in the Sonoran desert (Phoenix area) and there is no end to them. Eliminate 4 or 5 of them and in a few days a new group appears. I use the Hav-a-heart brand with no bait at all. Once a "customer" is in the trap, it's time for a swim. Quick and painless and the neighborhood coyotes benefit.
