I guess it was inevitable after the Allen trade.

should really just close this one out without drama. That would be very nice.

Well....

In true John Wetteland fashion - never an easy close.

Still a sweep and a day off.

The umps made a bad call in the 1st inning by calling a Cincinnati fair ball dropped by Bauers foul. Then they made a second bad call allowing Jonathan India to score from 1st (should have been a ground rule double) and Boone got thrown out

Are you sure about the foul ball? I don't have peacock, so I can't watch this game and didn't see it. But, it is a common mistake by fans to think if the player is in fair territory and touches the ball while it is over foul territory that the dropped ball is fair because the player is fair. That is not correct.

It was definitely a fair ball. Bauer made contact with the ball while he was clearly in fair territory.

After review batter was given a double which I have no problem with but the runner from first should’ve been sent back to third. As soon as the ump signaled foul ball the play is dead, and just because the runner kept running hen the play is dead doesn’t mean he should score. Especially when the Yanks eased up on the foul call.

I don’t blame Boone one bit for getting tossed as the Yanks got penalized for the umps mistake.

That's the point. It doesn't matter that the fielder is in fair territory 100%. If the ball is deemed to be over foul territory when he contacts it, it is a foul ball.

Yeah I should’ve been clearer. Bauers made contact with the ball while it was clearly in fair territory. Granted, he was too but you’re right. He can be in fair but if the ball is in foul territory it’s a foul ball. This play the ball was clearly fair when he made contact while sliding into foul territory.
Gotcha. So, how did they determine it was ultimately fair? Was it a challenge?

Either way, the initial foul call makes it a dead ball, which cause most players to stop play. In my estimation, that should be deemed an automatic double. That potentially sucks for the offense, but, that is the most objective and fair method.
Just watched the clip -the ball was clearly fair

So, it is good they reversed the foul call. But, the initial foul call means the play is dead. I don't know how they award 3 bases to the baserunner

Yes it was and Cincy challenged and won the challenge. No problem from me awarding the double but like you, think there’s no way they should have given the runner from first three bases on a dead ball. Boone lost it and rightfully so.

I’d love to catch a jomboy of that interaction as it looked to me like he was saying you’re fucking us because you guys fucked up the original call?
I think among us we've watched a lot of baseball.

Has anyone ever seen the extra base being awarded before? I have not.

Honestly I did but it was a play where the guy from first was running on the pitch, the ball was rolling around near the side outfield wall and was touched by a fan. The runner had clearly rounded third and would’ve scored easily if it wasn’t touched.

It is rare though to see a runner awarded three bases that’s for sure and I’ve never seen what happened today. Everyone stops or at least gears it down once the play is called foul and the ball is dead. No way you can say what would’ve happened once the play is dead.

I wouldn't mind if umps actually followed the rule as written
and used their discretion. But they've been pretty damn consistent about not giving an extra base. And that's more workable, versus getting into very subjective calls.
Boone pressed the right buttons today

The corrected fair/foul call situation is no different from that for
shyster : 5/21/2023 3:51 pm : link
fan interference on a ball in play. Ball is dead when fan touches, but that doesn't mean runners are frozen where they were, or can only be placed at the next base. Umps can award whatever they think would have happened if the play had played out.

Someone above admitted it was 99% the Cincy runner would have scored. Then it was the correct call. There's no 100% requirement.

Example I came across: May 30, 2011, Twins@Tigers, score tied 5-5 in bottom of 8th, two out, man on first.

Double down left field line, fan interferes, runner from first awarded home. Extremely unlikely runner could have actually reached third base before the ball was touched, but didn't matter.

Run ultimately decided the game for Tigers, 6-5.

Of course, Ron Gardenhire got ejected.

I'd have to see footage of the runner as well. But, under normal conditions, it would not be 99% sure he scores and not close. The runner, at best, would be half way bet. 1st and 2nd waiting to see if the ball was caught. It was immediately called foul, so, at best, the runner would be at 2nd when it was called, which in and of itself is not likely. Even assuming that, the ball was not deep. Assuming the runner takes 2 baes at that point seemd unlikely.

There were two outs; runner would not have been waiting. And I'm sure that was part of the umps' decision.

Difference being in this case it wasn’t a fan touched dead ball but a foul ball call. Players stop reacting as soon as that’s called and no way anyone can say what would’ve happened if everyone continued playing.

The foul ball call was made immediately and no doubt at least a couple of seconds before a fan in the above scenario could’ve had a chance to touch it. Bauers and the Yankees clearly stopped playing at the foul call, and if anyone sees the replay even the home plate ump was in dead ball mode. Had his mask off and slowly walking out towards the mound. He stopped his job at the foul call as well as the Yankee players.

Definitely not your normal grounds rule bounce over the wall double or fan interference type play. The ump messed up and the Yanks paid for his screwup. Fairest thing to do there is award the runner two bases and not three. Awarding three was more of a subjective call and in this instance while he probably scores, it wasn’t cut and dried he would. Again, no one could say with 100% certainty what would’ve happened if the players didn’t stop playing because of the foul call.
Yanks are slowly but surely moving up in the AL standings -

Baltimore series is a good test as they're one of the teams ahead of us at the moment. No longer are they patsies; they've really improved.
