NFT: Carmelo Announces Retirement

Earl the goat : 5/22/2023 10:59 am
Good luck. Very nice career

But a ball stopping .. me first .. self proclaimed superstar

If I had a vote. Not a first ballot HOF

NCAA Champion. But poor nba playoff record

Last opinion. Forcing Knicks to trade for him and not waiting for free agency was just a selfish move

Like I said. Nice career but not great Just my opinion
I agree
NYG22 : 5/22/2023 11:17 am : link
If your measure is stats, great player.

If your goal is to win, not a great player (no a contributing piece towards winning).
He gets in on stats
UConn4523 : 5/22/2023 11:18 am : link
but I wouldn’t vote for him. One of my least favorite “superstars” since he came into the league.
Demanded the Knicks
bobc : 5/22/2023 11:38 am : link
trade for him instead of waiting a couple of months for free agency so he would make a few more dollars. the knicks then gutted the team to get him early and never really recovered while he was there, Never thought he ever had the team and winning a title as his first priority

I still say this is hard to argue when he won in college and internationally. He is obviously a contributing piece towards winning.

Winning a title in the NBA is one of the hardest things in sports to do, and some of the greatest of all time didn't win an NBA ring.

Chris Paul also doesn't have an NBA ring, and Dwayne Wade never won anything without Shaq and without James as backup.

Melo got as far as you can get without a championship roster.
I think he’s partly to blame for the cast issues
UConn4523 : 5/22/2023 11:56 am : link
he didn’t handle decisions very well and he ended up alienating the best team he played for. Rumored to be notoriously difficult to work with in his prime and you can’t get away with that consistently unless you are a dominant player like LeBron.
Sure fire first ballot HOf
Tuckrule : 5/22/2023 12:01 pm : link
His Olympic career alone is HOF worthy
Knicks need to do something
larryflower37 : 5/22/2023 12:03 pm : link
At the start of the season to honor him.
Still a top 75 player and one of the top Knicks of all time, everyone kills him for forcing a trade early but how many wanted to come to the Knicks and take on that burden?
He embraced NY and tried to bring a championship I don't know anyone else but Brunson that has done that.
Still one of my favorite Knicks of all time.
Great iso player who’s skill set got devalued
Jim in Fairfax : 5/22/2023 12:22 pm : link
For a long time a player who could score all by himself was the bedrock you needed on a championship team. Then it suddenly occurred to NBA teams that 3-point shots were worth….3 points. Now you needed someone who could operate off pick and roll and hit open men on the arc if the defense collapsed on him. Teams also started making better use of zone defense to attack iso players, it having been legalized just before Carmelo entered the leauge.

For stretches, Carmelo showed he could be that guy. He could hit the open guy when he wanted to. But he chafed at the role, and fell into the iso black hole from which he dominated in his early career. But the game changed and he never adjusted.
I think you guys
Semipro Lineman : 5/22/2023 12:50 pm : link
are full of it with your criticisms and are taking your Knicks-Lack-of-Championships frustrations out on him and a few others recently. Carmelo Anthony joins the list of great players who came in, put it all on the court, and then got run out of town by frustrated fans.

This ball hog/black hole nonsense is an exaggeration his play. Guys who supposedly play the right way like Kawhi Leonard (excluding first 3 years in the league) and Paul George average similar number of assists and shots per game without being call a ball hog. But yeah, Carmelo is the black hole, etc...
For the millionth time
nygiants16 : 5/22/2023 1:02 pm : link
Knicks couldnt just sign him as a free agent, they didnt have the cap space and he wanted the trade because of the impending lockout..Knicks traded Gallo l, Chandler and Mosgov essentially for him and 2 1sts...didnt gvie up a whole lot..

and people conveniently leave out that that team was trending in the wrong direction and likely would of ended uo missing the playoffs if it wasnt for Melo..

This whole he doesnt effect winning is a load of crap, all he did was make the playoffs in the west with Denver and carried those teams..

first ballot HOF easily, wanted the Knicks whrn no one else did..
Melo played 7 full seasons in Denver.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 5/22/2023 1:09 pm : link
The fewest wins they had during that stretch surpassed the most wins they had during the 7 seasons prior to his arrival. They made the playoffs every season with Melo. They didn’t make the playoffs once during the previous 7 seasons. Through their first 7 seasons, Melo and Jokic played in an equal amount of the Nuggets best NBA seasons by win percentage (three).

Willis Reed won a MVP and finished second the following season. The Knick with the highest MVP finish outside of him isn’t Patrick Ewing, Clyde Frazier, or Bernard King. It’s Melo.

Yes, he had 1 great season as a Knick when he was 3rd in MVP voting. He only got votes in one other season. Ewing was top 5 MVP in six seasons as a Knick. Don’t make like he’s the greatest Knick since Reed.

The greatest Knick since Reed was Andrea Bargnani of course

It’s not out of context because the purpose was never to imply that he was a better Knick than those guys. That would be ridiculous. The purpose was to inform. TBH, I never thought that anyone would take it that way. I simply posted a fact about Melo.
Melo was a beast on Denver and was pretty damn good
Kmed6000 : 5/22/2023 2:50 pm : link
when he first came to knicks. He was never the same after the knee injury. Def a 1st ballot HOF.
When Melo first came into the league
Kmed6000 : 5/22/2023 2:57 pm : link
he turned a bad franchise into a respectable franchise on day 1.

17 wins in 2002 before Melo
43 wins his rookie season with an eh roster around him. Then 49, 44, 45, 50, 54, 53, 50. Then melo leaves and outside of 1 lucky season, they were a perennial 30-35 win team.
It's not the NBA HOF
elpeces : 5/22/2023 4:13 pm : link
It's the The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. College and the Olympics should get him in on the first ballot.
I'm not going to enter any argument about
Beezer : 5/22/2023 4:31 pm : link
whether or not he's a first-ballot guy, etc.

I'll just say this: He was the single most frustrating Knick of my life as a Knicks fan, and that includes Charles Smith (those misses) and John Starks (that game).

The Knicks could be cruising, moving and grooving, dishing and swishing. Enter Carmelo, late game, and the action would stop. Ball to Melo. Iso bullshit.

He was good enough that sometimes? It worked out. But fuck all, if he didn't drain the life out of many Knicks would-be wins.

One of my son's favorite players. One of my least-favorite. We still joust over it. lol

You guys are nuts who don’t think he is a first ballot hall of famer
GMEN46 : 5/22/2023 10:11 pm : link
Melo definitely had his moments where he frustrated me, but he is an absolute first ballot hall of famer. I actually think he was underrated. He is one of the greatest scorers in NBA history and I always take what players say over what the media portrays. He is one of the most respected players by his peers. Kobe said Melo is the hardest player he ever had to guard. He was mostly on winning teams, never had the supporting cast. Replace RJ with prime Melo and this Knicks team wins multiple championships. He is an absolute beast and will go down as one the greatest players to never win a ring. Almost took out the lakers in his younger days with the nuggets. I def appreciated him more after he left Knicks.
The Knicks offense came to a grinding halt with the ball in his hands
GeofromNJ : 5/23/2023 10:34 am : link
Dolan should never have forced the front office to trade for Anthony. The Knicks would have been better off with Gallinari and using subsequent drafts to improve the team. The Knicks were never going to win with this guy. He simply refused to share the ball. Once in his hands, he held it, attempting to feign the defender until the clock ran down. As
for Hall of Fame - who cares. I was simply delighted when the Knicks traded him - and who they got in return was immaterial. I knew that ultimately the Knicks would improve with Anthony gone.
Some really dumb takes here
TyreeHelmet : 5/23/2023 1:06 pm : link
Melo was a great Knick and one of the best scorers in NBA history. Go listen to and read what fellow nba players think of him.

The Melo trade was a good move for the Knicks. It’s comical to argue otherwise.

The moves after getting Melo was disastrous. They put dogshit around him his entire time with the Knicks. And that includes players, coaches and front office.

Yup build around Gallo and Amare, The same Gallo who played 54 games in the 2 years after the trade..

I never embraced those Melo teams
Sean : 5/23/2023 1:26 pm : link
I was apathetic towards the Knicks then, it sucked. I like caring and when you are numb or apathetic it’s hard to consider yourself a “fan”. Fortunately I got that feeling back this year with the Knicks and really enjoyed this team.

It’s why I never buy the fact when BBI’ers here say they’ve become “numb” to the Giants. If you were numb you wouldn’t be here posting, haha.

As for Melo, I appreciate him taking on the challenge and coming here. Great scorer.
I get it that
Enzo : 5/23/2023 1:28 pm : link
his tenure here didn't result in all that much winning - but some of these takes are comical. However, I do think most fans appreciate him. I was at game 2 vs. the Heat and when they showed all of the ex players in attendance (and there were a lot), he got a massive ovation.

Also, FWIW, he was probably among the more well liked stars around the league when it came to his contemporaries (how many guys were close with LBJ, Kobe, and KD?)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Knicks have given out some of the worst contracts in the history of the league - but the Ron Baker contract, despite being relatively small, might be the most ridiculous.

The knicks don't opt in Chauncey, they amnesty Amare instead, and now all of a sudden you open up another max.

You could've had
CP3
Smith
Melo
Sheed/K-Mart/KOQ/etc...
Tyson

History looks a lot different.
