Thursday Game Flex Passed 24-8

BeckShepEli : 5/22/2023 5:08 pm
24-8, games can be Flexed In/Out of Thursday night. Schefter reporting it
The NFL just doesn't get it.

Accept that the number one priority of the NFL is to maximize $ s, all the decisions their decisions make sense.
Trying

to piece together who were the 8. Mara publicly said he was against it correct? Mark Davis actually did as well

"Four of the eight teams who voted against flex scheduling were the New York Giants, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers. The two abstentations were the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos."

I guess one could guess NYG/NYJ/Chicago/Packers/Raiders are 5 of them but teams could have flipped since then presumably.
John Mara was right to oppose this.

Really unfair to ticket holders, even with 28 days’ notice.
This why

Exactly. As long as the sheep keep buying tickets...oh well!
So
DanMetroMan : 5/22/2023 5:45 pm : link
if somebody wants to book a weekend in New Orleans to see the Giants/Saints they have to now worry about not even being able to see the game if it's flexed. Really cool to the fans that don't have enough money to book thinks "later".

Let’s just say that NFL players and coaches consider it pretty rich that the league is trying to curb kickoffs in the name of “player safety” while simultaneously flexing Thursday Night Football and scheduling teams more than once on those short weeks, too

For example this season, Giants play the Saints in New Orleans on Sunday, Dec. 17. That's a huge travel game for fans.

Imagine booking that trip in advance a week before Christmas, and then having to change flights and hotel IN NEW ORLEANS if Giants/Saints was flexed to TNF.
If Mara....really wanted to kill it....it wouldn't have passed

That specific example actually couldn't happen - teams are limited to one road TNF per year. But his general point holds.

The NFL does get it - green, and lots of it. And they figure they aren't going to screw more than 3 or 4 thousand fans a year. When has the NFL ever put the fans before TV dollars. Look at how they have shortened the games to get more commercials in.
from CBS sports article
wahl35 : 5/22/2023 7:50 pm : link
But the determination the league and the owners have made is that, all of those people above who are impacted across those teams and cities equal a number that is far less than the number of people who will be watching on a screen somewhere. And that number is what matters.

"Very, very important point," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Monday when the inconvenience to the fans was mentioned. "Every owner in that room lives and breathes sensitivity to those fans. But only 7% of our fans have ever been inside a stadium. Seven. Percent. So you've got a lot of fans — a huge majority of the fans that are out there — that this is good for them."

Nope, disagree. They think the cause for the historically bad track record of Thursday night games is the scheduling. Nope. Maybe, just maybe, it is the short rest for players, the limited time to prepare, the travel, etc. No, they don't get it.
And I'll ssy this for the millionth time ...
robbieballs2003 : 5/22/2023 7:59 pm : link
If you want Thursday night games to get better then the solution is simple to me. Expand the season by one week. Add in an extra bye week. The players play the same amount of games. The NFL gets an extra week of revenue. You have the SB on President's Day Weekend. Then you have every team playing on Thursday night with a bye week the week before as their extra bye week. It isn't that hard to figure out. That is how you get a better quality product on the field.

I don't think Dallas' and Detroit's Thanksgiving Games count for TNF exemption purposes or neither team would ever play in a regular TNF game.

I agree. The NFL is proposing a lot of bs changes in the name of player safety then pull this garbage. Amazon is not happy with their investment and wants the NFL to bail them out with better games. They knew what they were getting into when NFL wanted every team in a slot when they were the only televised game. It is not the NFL’s fault that Amazon’s product sucks regardless of the game on the field.

I ask this all the time - why does nobody bitch about Thanksgiving Thursday games but all other Thursdays. Nothing is different other than being a holiday. Teams and players still have short weeks and road teams still get screwed. It is no different than any other Thursday game

Flexing time on the same day is 1 thing. Flexing with ability to change days is wrong

Always remember the only score that ultimately matters to the owners is the franchise value

By the league of greed. Then again, I think Thursday night games are a terrible idea in general. At least the Giants voted against it.

The point is none of that matters. The only thing that matters to the NFL owners is money, and if the broadcasters are happy, the NFL keeps getting more and more money. They will do whatever it takes to keep the TV people happy. Amazon wanted this and they got it.

At least known Thursday games you can plan accordingly from the time of schedule release not 1 month prior. Also, except for Week 1 and some Thanksgiving games the NFL has been more cognizant about not having a team travel an extensive distance before a TNF game. The only reason NYG@SF is on TNF is because we are in Arizona the week before and Bay Area is a less than 2 hour flight from Arizona. The one thing I will say is that, based on the current TNF schedule from Weeks 13-17 and the rules for flexing teams, I am not sure there is any match that would be worth flexing. The worst looking matchup right now is Week 16 (NO @ LAR). The problem is I am not sure there is anyone else worth flexing that is allowed under the guidelines. Detroit and Tennessee both already have away TNF games so their matches CAN'T be flexed in. I guess they could flex in DAL @ MIA if Thanksgiving doesn't count. If Amazon was smart they would use flex scheduling no more than once because then they can make the argument next year that they are not doing it just because they can.

Well you can play in 2 TNF games, you just can't play in 2 road TNF games, at least according to Schefter, so that has nothing to do with those home games. (I think the Detroit exception I noted above is because one of them is week 1, which obviously isn't a short week).

Dallas at Miami will not be flexed. NY and Philadelphia play on Christmas day. This opens up for Dallas to be televised in the 4:25 slot nationally.

This was discussed on a Dallas forum and Dallas has literally zero chance of being flexed because of their schedule between week 13 and 17. They are playing nationally televised games every week.
PSL
Simms : 5/24/2023 10:29 am : link
Any team with a PSL in place wins. The tickets are paid for. Just another NFL reach to maximize revenue. AND they know most will still watch.

With work the next day and the 6 hour round trip attending Thursday night games are a reach for me personally.

The NFL and its pay for view model on the cusp on launching will create a different type of fan.
