Speaking on the new fair catch rule, NFL exec Jeff Miller cites higher concussion rates on kickoffs and punts relative to other plays and says unprompted: “There may be more to come.”
Modeling says return rate will drop from 38% to 31% and concussion rate drop 15%, Miller says.
That's basically the xfl rule. Watch a video on it if you haven't seen it. It's pretty good.
I'm curious... which parts of the game that have recently changed do you feel are unwatchable?

they screw with the game until it's no longer watchable.

Let's start with roughing the passer. Then the incessant penalties that keep drives going when the defense makes a stop. Or, the long run/pass called back because of some ticky-tack penalty while obvious penalties (like those on Thibs?) get ignored. The endless commercials that draw out the game so that most games are now 3 1/2 hours for a 60 minute game. There are more, and there will be more in the future when the screw with the rules again.

probably dumb but why not have teams line up tight to scrimmage line like a punt? maybe on receiving 35-40yd line? would this reduce the high speed impacts?

thanks, cheers.
Which of these rules bars a player from returning a punt?
That's the whole point of this rule. They're moving closer and closer to doing away with the kickoff. Kickoffs and punts are still the plays that account for the most injuries. They're just slowing making the play less and less important until they can just pull the plug on it without much uproar.
