Smyly at 19 pitches already. Can be a great start to the series to get to the bullpen early
-Was told there is a “feeling” the Mets still view Mauricio as a potential trade chip for SP help. This feeling is coming from other teams who have spoken to the Mets this season
-Rudick is viewed as legitimate prospect by the Mets (and externally). Breakout is viewed as legitimate. Not the next big thing (most likely) but not just a throwaway big start. One to watch.
Of course, you never know what is going to happen with injuries but the depth at starter is significant.
What we likely need is a high leverage reliever or two but that shouldnt cost Mauricio.
Carrasco is finished. Hopefully, he moves to the pen as the long man when Quintana returns.
I’m sure they are snooping around. It’s not a coincidence that Teheran signed an mlb day the day after the Padres released him. Teams allow players to “negotiate” with other teams in these cases. I’m sure the Mets are on the hunt as we speak. El Paso is a terrible pitching environment so Teheran may well pitch well but the numbers were ugly. Good authority they did speak with him though .
Sanchez, Pham, and Escobar all starting with better players on the bench...
Ugh...
Kinda lame. Think the whole thing is overblown. Alonso was excited. Typically he'll just say LFGM or something and not actually pronounce it out.
It's fine letting him hone his defense at 2B or whatever a little longer but he should be a part of this team at some point in 2023 IMO.
He's just performing too well in AAA to ignore. If he keeps this up I think he should be up by end of June at the latest.
Trade Pham and make Canha the 4th OF.
I actually like a bench of Canha, Vogey, Escobar, and Narvaez
He is fucking horrible.
of course xxxl guillorme without the defense (vogelbach) does his best small ball impression flying out semi-hard at 96mph.
if its a 1 run game and you are putting up mcneil because a base hit ties it i get it. in this situation there was no reason for that switch when vogelbach has been the opposite of a run producer.
Everyone knew it was going to happen. Why keep Vientos out there when you can have the 300 lb ZERO up at bat? I would love Buck if he wasn’t so ignorant and stubborn.
Would have been nice to have had him here over Canha. Almost the whole lineup is homegrown. Would have been cool for him to be a part of it.
Haha!
Well there's a number of decisions and events in this game tonight where I don't know how you can honestly say that. Pinch hitting for Vientos and sitting Alvarez have in fact proved not to be "best for the team".
So why is it happening?
Scherzer may not opt out.
Money off the books next year: Carrasco ($14 million; replace with Vasil), Canha ($10.5 million; replace with Mauricio); Escobar ($9.5 million; replace with Guillorme); Pham ($5 million; maybe replace with Rudick).
That right there is 4 players making a total of $39 million where you can get equal or better production from cost-controlled players.
That will almost pay for Ohtani. If Mets lose out on Ohtani, spend on FA pitching. Let's say Dodgers go for Ohtani. Spend on Urias. As Dan has mentioned a number of times, next year's FA is horrendous for hitters beyond Ohtani. Devers/Machado locked up. Pitching it's not bad.
Mets could still have Verlander, Scherzer, Senga, Urias, Quintana, Peterson, Megill, Vasil. If Scherzer opts out, replace him with a Nola or Giolito. Cheaper on a yearly basis and younger.
Bring in the homegrown hitters:
CF Nimmo
LF McNeil
SS Lindor
1B Alonso
3B Baty
C Alvarez
DH Vientos
2B Mauricio
RF Marte
bench: Narvaez, Guillorme, Rudick, Canha or Escobar on a cheaper re-sign
eventually you have Ramirez/Williams/Parada stepping in as McNeil and Marte age out.
He's such a tease. He looks like Babe Ruth, but he hits more like Buddy Harrelson.

That's not a knock on Buddy, who was scrappy and at least a contributor with his glove at SS.

They're listing Jett Williams as a CF ? I thought he was playing a lot of SS in the minors.
Most of the Met Pitching prospects are 2 years away. They have to fill that gap, and I shudder to think of Eppier making any more deadline deals this summer.

Other GMs LOOOVE Eppler though! lol
that was a good list other than the rudick omission probably.
fangraphs has 118 prospects graded 50+ and the mets 7 are tied with Cincy for most in MLB. they also have mets farm 4th most valuable 1 spot ahead of tampa. graduations are going to pummel it over the next year but if they can transition these kids into a successful 1/3 of the lineup not much will matter.
Mauricio 2-5, 2b, error, CS

Nifty skill set, dunno if he’ll do enough damage to be a long term regular
Some of these ETAs are a bit silly. Parada 2026? Jett 2028? Vasil 2025? Tidwell 2026?

Rudick is likely not to be a long term starter on a team like the Mets, I can agree. But he looks like he could possibly be quite a 4th OF, which is quite valuable.

buck seems intent on 2 of them playing together in a merry go round but rarely all 3 at once.

Not sure why the #Mets called up Mark Vientos to not prioritize playing him daily.
In minors this year
- 13 HR
- .333 BA
- 1.104 OPS
vs RHP in minors this year
- 11 HR
- .327 BA
- 1.105 OPS
Guess when you can get Vogelbach and his .721 OPS in there vs RHP you make it happen.

this has been my biggest gripe in terms of not calling up vientos earlier. vogelbach is on pace for like 6 homers now. he is a 300 pound version of guillorme, except he cant hit lefties at all and with no defense.
i respect his ability to get on base but if he isnt doing damage he is simply nowhere near an everyday player.
1 easy way to break up morel's homer streak would have been to bench him the day after he hit his homers.

it makes absolutely no sense. Vogelbach is slugging .377 vs. RHP this season. He's not some "proven" above average MLB masher, he's with his 7th organization for a reason. I've been mildly defensive of him (as a bench bat, quality AB late in a game ala Lenny Harris) but this is ridiculous. Morel was scorching hot, called up and is playing every day. We all remember what Mike Jacobs did, why not see what the kid can do? This isn't like suggesting benching a guy like Marte... it's Vogelbach!

his may numbers are even worse so the trend is going backwards.
in 18 games / 54 plate appearances in May:
.200 / .333 / .311
(644 ops / 87 rc)
he has 2 doubles, 1 homer, and 4 rbis.
his only positive number is 9 walks (to go along with 9 total hits). that's it.
vientos, escobar, baty, alvarez all deserve playing time more than vogelsnack. even canha has almost twice as many xbh in roughly the same playing time. pham has been better this month. all of them bring more versatility since they can play defense.
i get since his only value is the bat he cant rebuild any value without at bats, but he doesnt need starts and he certainly doesnt need to be subbed in for vientos right now.
doesnt really matter, he should have stayed at organization #4 and we'd still have holderman.
for all the issues with the lack of vientos at bats now he was over a 900 ops in AAA a year ago. think about how many at bats have been wasted between then and now on trash. and how many prospects were given up for ruf, vogey, naquin when they could have just kept jdd (who even had an option remaining i think).
even if all those prospects stink, they at least could have been traded for other things at the deadline.
