When the Yankees get healthy and absolutely catch fire to the tune of a 25-10 stretch, surging back into the hunt in the AL East, I want you to all remember who told you to keep the faith amidst these dark and uncertain times.
This team is officially back to 10 games over .500.

Yup, amazing job to overcome Cole’s lousy start against an excellent bullpen

Judge is almost beyond words right now, but I absolutely loved seeing Volpe jump on the first pitch to deliver the game winner. Kid was ready, didn’t wait until he was forced to chase 2 strike breaking balls to deliver

He really is at this point and nothing he does surprises me. It’s amazing how much he means to this team and us fans.

He lifts the team by just being in the lineup and to see their reactions to his plays is really a fun watch. It’s like they can’t even believe some of the things they’re seeing him do but in the next second it’s a shrug of the shoulders and of course, why am I not surprised he just did that type of reaction from them.

As a fan, it’s very much like watching Mickey Mantle when I was a kid. You never wanted to miss one of his AB’s and if something had to be done, it had to wait until after he hit. Judge is very much in the same category now, can’t miss tv and it seems everyone at the game is in their seats for his AB’s. Concessions and bathroom breaks can wait.

He started off on fire, but if you look at the last month he has not been great. NOt terrible, but not great. And despite Stu11 know it all take, the fact is we've all rightly bitched at one time or another that he's come up small in big spots as a Yankee. That said, he's still the best FA signing they've had in years simply because he plays every day (every turn).
Rizzo and Judge are absolutely carrying this team right now...
rnargi : 5/24/2023 10:07 am : link
...good to see, but some of the others need to pick it up. Seems Volpe and Bader are the only other regular contributors on offence. Still don't see this team going anywhere, despite this nice stretch. We'll see how they adjust at the deadline. Moves will need to be made to truly contend. Need a true LF, BP and SP help, IMHO

See, this is what I'm talking about. Volpe? He's done next to nothing. I think he's a real deal talent, I'm excited about his future, but he's putting up a .195/.239/.427 line in May. Gleyber, on the other hand, gets ripped here day in and day out but is hitting .274/.330/.441. Hardly overwhelming, but he's contributing a helluva lot more than Volpe.
Also, since people went berserk over the trade last year...
Greg from LI : 5/24/2023 10:43 am : link
Bader's killing it for them this year while Jordan Montgomery is 2-6 with a 4.55 ERA.
It is kind of funny though
Essex : 5/24/2023 10:49 am : link
how the Yankees season always repeats itself. Basically, we struggle in many areas but the BP (sans Judge). Then the BP gets hurt and then our season goes down the tubes. Hopefully, this is the year the BP stays healthy because it really is pitching lights out.

Greg, I think we expect more out of Gleyber. He became enamored with the long ball to the detriment of his natural ability to slash to the opposite field. His offense has suffered for it, and it's not debatable. Why he's fixated on HRs is anyone's guess.

As for Volpe, he's a spark plug (13 SBs) and though he has struggled at the plate for stretches at a time, he's been in the mix. With that stat line, he still has as many HRs and only 2 less RBIs than Gleyber. Also they have roughly the same BBs. Volpe is a 22 year rookie who's played in all 50 games so far. He isn't expected to carry the club. Gleyber is expected to contribute heavily.
I'm with Greg
Matt M. : 5/24/2023 6:15 pm : link
By no means am I disappointed in Volpe or criticizing him. But, he's been hovering around .200 BA for a while and his OBA is less than .300. Yes, he is exciting and his ceiling is huge. But, SB alone don't make him a huge contributor.

I have been down on Gleyber for a couple of years now. But, he's batting about 50 points higher, has about 50 points more in OBA, and has scored 10 more runs. They have roughly the same # of ABs and Gleyber has 10 more hits, 5 more walks, and 34 less Ks. That last one is significant. He's no monster by any stretch. But, he has bounced back this year to at least become a decent contributor. The problem is he still gets too streaky in both directions.

I hate a discussion like this because if you get involved, it invariably seems like you are taking sides, which is not the case here. If I had to pick one to build a team with, I'd take Volpe because he is a better defender at the more premium position and I think his ceiling is huge to the point where I believe he is going to be a star.

I will add that I love the move down to the 7 hole (6 sometimes). I was moved to the leadoff spot too soon. I know it was somewhat out of necessity, but it was too much pressure for a young rookie. People forget Jeter hit mostly in the 9 hole for a couple of years.
Volpe is just an easier player to like
NoGainDayne : 5/24/2023 6:50 pm : link
I've gotten too excited about Gleyber too many times. (Including the start of this year)

In the end Volpe has definitely been a bit of a disappointment but he's a likable personality and a high effort player. With Gleyber it is just far too often that you see him not execute on something he is perfectly capable of and like the level someone cares is a pretty difficult thing to measure but it makes it more challenging to really like a player that has the talent to do more than they do.

only in light of my high hopes for him. I also learned that he went to the same middle school as me shortly before his debut, which only intensified this.

But no need to bash through all of that.

What Gleyber is doing is remarkable. Increasing BB% rate significantly while drastically reducing K% is almost unheard of, and speaks to a strong possibility that he’s really unlocked something in his approach and preparation.

Up until a few days ago it looked like he had sacrificed some exit velo and slug to get there, but now the power is coming back.

Boone used 3 guys that inning and none of them could get anyone out but yeah it's his fault. He's managed a rag tag group decimated by injury to the best bullpen era in baseball coming in but he has "no feel for the game". Priceless. Do me a favor guys. Never change.

Looked tired? He didn’t look tired to me. He was cruising through the game and had a pretty low pitch count entering that inning. As it was he only threw 89 pitches including the three batters in the 7th. His velocity wasn’t down either.

Not sure what other things might’ve pointed to him being tired?

I’m not the biggest Boone fan, but that inning wasn’t on him. If he took Nestor out to begin the inning and the pen shit the bed like they did, he’d be getting killed for not having Nestor go back out for another inning. I know it never even crossed my mind to take Nestor out after the 6th.

This. A while back when Boone took German out under similar circumstances, everyone killed him for that. There was much yelling about how he was dealing and his pitch count was low. This time, he leaves his starter in and the same people are screaming about that.

I'm not much of a Boone fan but this stuff is ridiculous. The complaints are 100% based on the outcome. Pulling pitchers early is stupid! Except when you leave a cruising starter in and he gets bombed in a late inning, then that's stupid too!
Of course Boone has his faults
Stu11 : 5/25/2023 9:58 am : link
Mangers/Coaches have varying affects on the outcomes of the different sports. Baseball they probably have the least affect game to game. One area they do have a big affect is bullpen management. The main beef among his many detractors in here is his lack of "feel for the game". Nothing demonstrates a feel for the game more than the management of the pen. Well throughout his tenure the bullpen #'s have been elite year in year out. This while dealing with huge amounts of injuries year in year out and doing it with less than household names. So what exactly is this evidence of his "lack of feel for the game"?
You can't blame Boone

When are they going to DFA Abreu by the way, not a major league pitcher. He has no idea how to pitch, just throws.

when he looked tired and let the inning get away

Exactly. I expected to be pissed that inning because Boone yanked Nestor for giving up a hit or a walk or just for the sake of a matchuo. He was cruising.
Who are you replacing Abreu with?

Until some guys gets healthy, there's basically no one.

Kahnle will be back soon supposedly.
Boone's lineups are suspect

Puts rookie SS leadoff. Not even a rookie like Jeter had that pressure. Then he tries it with Bauers.
Not sure if the other hitters like being moved up and down the lineup

I noticed Cortes dropping down and falling off the mound on a pitch to the second batter he faced in the 7th and he had not done that earlier in the game. his pitch count was in the 80's by then.

Baseball replay is a fucking joke.

What game threads? Since the resident Yankees experts don’t want any

critical comments, we get about one thread a week now.

I didn’t want the hassle og signing up for apple tv so didn’t watch the game. I wonder how Vasquez looked compared to Brito. FB looks 95-96 and the cutter. Need one of these young pitchers to step up and Volpe to get hot to inject this team with some excitement. Can’t be asking Jusge to hit two bombs a night…..
