Was the best performance of any live show I have ever been to. I only went because my girlfriend wanted to see her and man was she full of energy. Much respect for her
Dallas, 1985 or 86. friends older sister (Pinky) managed an exclusive hi end furniture store/warehouse that the Hunt brothers used to frequent.
Was visiting my friend that week, we'd play epic 1 on 1's, best of 7. Winner at end of week got to give loser a haircut.
Then we'd go out down the Greenway, get dinner and drink a little.
One morning, hung over, 9am, when we are summoned down by
Pinky hissing on the phone" you have to come down an meet Tina Turner! She's coming in in 30 minutes!"
SowWe threw on the clothes from last night( we smelled none so good) went down, and proceeded to find some corner to hide in.
I must have dozed off, but was awoken by murmuring and lo! Tina is walking with a 15?person entourage toward us... and right at the couch I was slumped in! No graceful escape.
Hoping they'd veer away, I tried to be inconspicuous.
Well. She sat on the other end of the white leather couch I was decaying on, turned to me and said 'Hello" and smiled. I waved weakly back ,grinning "Hi..."
But a minute earlier the prosecutable-war-crimes level gas I was holding in spewed out, Spleen like, with the velocity (silently, mind you), of a propane tank on steroids.
I almost suffocated.
She merely wrinkled her nose, and kept smiling, getting up saying politely" Good bye"...
"Seeya" I waved back.
absolute legend. One of the greatest musicians and performers ever IMO. Charismatic, magnetic, and telegenic with endless energy. She was also very generous in helping other musicians. RIP. God bless. Prayers to her family and friends.

Magnetic...the perfect word to describe her as a performer. True legend...and that's a word that gets thrown around way too liberaly.
she was everywhere for two reasons:
1. the video for "What's Love Got to Do With It" was on MTV and VHI all the time
2. HBO played Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome seemingly ever day
What's Love Got To Do With It and We Don't Another Hero...part of my soundtrack of my youth growing up in the 80s. And though it's not really my music per se, I loved it.
RIP to an absolute legend.
IMO, she had a really interesting but classic American life

I think Elvis did it best.

Loved her version of Proud Mary better than Foggerty's, and he's no slouch
I think Elvis did it best.
I never heard a version by him, but he sure didn't look as good in a short dress
And it was not even close!

Almost cost Pinky her sale.

That is funny.
Most unexpected guilty pleasure performance of all time.
