Having been a previous Bay resident, I knew a lot of Oakland fans. That's a good fanbase that has been completely beaten down. It sucks that it looks like they're going to Vegas.

They can’t get a stadium deal done. And that city has many other issues they must deal with. It’s a historic franchise I’m glad it’s getting another opportunity.

N$$$$$ in public on Facebook etc it makes me very uncomfortable he thinks it’s funny and he also thinks Glenn kuiper was not using it with malice so he doesn’t care …. But we can disagree of course peacefully I think it’s tragic
The A's fans I knew were pretty big diehards who would catch multiple games a year at that shithole of a stadium. I can't speak to their attendance #s, though I imagine they're abysmal. I think a lot of fans have just thrown in the towel @ this point.

Yes, they are/were good fans. They were always hardcore fans, many of them coming from as far away as Sacramento who had an appreciation and understanding of baseball. This is in contrast to the wine sipping hipsters who go to SF Giants games.
As someone who lives here I'm surprised how feeble the efforts have been to keep them in the area. The city of Oakland is a corrupt hellhole but I would have thought San Jose, Fremont or Sacramento would have made more of an effort to bring them in. This may be the first time in history that a California team that perhaps could have been persuaded to stay in California is getting run out of the state.

I wouldn’t show up either this point either. Pre Covid they had a 100mm payroll and made the playoffs 3 years in a row.
I just don’t think this is a sonics type situation. This team has to move, it’s the only option IMO.

After last night it's -183, which is worse than the next three worst numbers *combined*. KC is next to last with -73, then Colorado with -51, and several teams are at -49. That's -173.
Washington had the worst run differential last year with -252. After just 51 games, Oakland is within 69 runs of that number. Absurd.
I attended a corporate event where they got a suite
at an A's game. That stadium was empty, I mean hundreds of fans. To be fair there was a rain delay so that hurt but its the emptiest Ive ever seen a sports event live outside of the old XFL.

The A's lost the ability to move to San Jose years ago.
When the Giants got their new ballpark, for some reason, the A's gave up their minor league rights to San Jose, so there's that. That as it turns out, was a huge mistake.
I recall reading this years ago...
The A's will have to get worse than they are. The worst MLB team to date is the 1899 Cleveland Spiders of the National League at 20-134. Realistically, they are in the running for worst team since 1900.
Wikipedia gives the basic info on how the Spiders accomplished that. It had to two with somebody owning two teams and trading his best players to his preferred team in St. Louis.
The Spiders actually stopped playing home games at some point in the season.
Three quarters of a billion dollars of government cheese
offered by Cali and Oakland is "not being serious"
It's ridiculous that's we've normalized government raining cash on billionaires who own sports franchises to the extent that this level of subsidy merits barely a sniff and an eye roll.
At this point, we don't even know what Nevada and Clark County will offer the A's to come play in their backyard. It's almost certainly going to be less that what they would have gotten in Oakland.
Not to mention that they'll be getting a smaller stadium in a much smaller media market.
The latest report is Nevada is willing to committ 200M, and the county is considering another 200M in bonds that the team would have to service. But that's dicey, because if the team defaults the county is on the hook.
It's a hell of an approach -- sabotage your product to record levels -- and then try to convince your lender it'll be a success and you can pay your bills.
The A's figured to play Oakland and Vegas off against each other
That was the whole idea behind the announcement "binding agreement" to purchase land for a future ballpark. It was supposed to put the fear of God into Oakland and get them to fork over more cash.
Unfortunately for the A's, Mayor Thao essentially told them to piss up a rope.

Oakland's offer to the A's was ridiculous. A ballpark at Howard Terminal would have required years of construction and infrastructure improvements, required construction of affordable housing, all managed by a corrupt, inept city government. If it ever got done, anybody arriving by BART would have to walk seven blocks from the West Oakland BART station through a part of Oakland that looks like the South Bronx in the 70's to Howard Terminal. That's worse than what they have now. The Warriors were so desperate to get out of Oakland that they left a geographically convenient location close to freeways and BART to a much less accessible arena in San Francisco.
...why did the A's want to build a ballpark there?
Because Fisher wanted to use the ballpark as leverage to allow him to build a huge development including 3,000 residential units and 1.5 million square feet of commercial space and he wanted the taxpayers to foot the bill for the required infrastructure.
It's the classic move for a sports team owner, ballpark as a teaser for a giant real estate deal.
And if Oakland sucks so much, why did the A's buy out Alameda County's interest in the Stadium property in 2020?

I also agree. I have said it many times. I believe there should be ZERO government loans, subsidies, etc. for sports arenas.
There's a reason why they never want to let people vote on this stuff
Most people, even most sports fans, are against these subsidies and they'll vote them down every chance they get.
Nsshville just voted to give the Titans 1.2 billion dollars for their new digs despite overwhelming public opposition.
Exactly. Even as a big Yankees fan and Giants fan, I was never in favor of either getting a single sent from their respective municipalities and/or states. It's bullshit.
I not really a fan of domed stadia, but in this case what the Hell is the point of a retractable roof? The damn thing is not likely to ever be open, so why waste the money.

You're playing in the desert. How many days will be cool enough to open the roof? The average high temperature in June, July and August is over 100F.

Most baseball games are played at night. Average temps at night during those months are in the 70’s. Seems reasonable to be able to play under the stars, no?

Not when the game starts, at 7 with the sun still out for about 1.5 hours. It is expensive, supposedly, to close the roof and it takes time in game. So, again, it's not likely to be be open very often.

Huh? That wasn't *Oakland's* offer, it was the *A's demands* of Oakland! Anyone who says the A's fans or the government of Oakland is at fault here hasn't been paying attention. The A's owner is a joke, with a long history of announcing deals before gaining approval (Laney College site, for one). Attendance is awful because they have been gutting the roster and threatening to move for years. No fan base can overcome that. They have a crumbling stadium on a great transportation-friendly location. Best thing was to tear down and build anew on that site. But owner wants mega condo/retail development deal, etc., etc. I hope Vegas wises up and smacks Fisher's open palm away.

The A's and Fisher "demanded" affordable housing ? No, that was the City of Oakland appeasing their constituents that hate anybody who's rich. After getting bent over by Al Davis they needed to show how tough they were going to be with the A's. You mention Laney College. Calling that institution a college is a bit of a stretch, but the site is one of the better spots in Central Oakland. Its closer to downtown ( or Uptown in Oakland parlance ) that the current coliseum and its still close to BART and I-880. The Laney people complained about all the extra traffic a new stadium would bring and apparently Oakland decided that appeasing the snowflakes was more important than keeping baseball in Oakland.
Have you looked at where Howard terminal is on a map ? Its in one of the worst parts of Oakland, its at least seven blocks from the nearest BART station, there is no existing infrastructure to support traffic and crowds and I would venture a guess that it would be as cold and windy as Candlestick.
They picked it because they don't want just a ballpark, they want to build a twelve billion dollar mega-project that included over 3000 residential units and 1.5 million feet of commercial space.
I don't know why you keep going on about how unsuitable the Howard Terminal site is like the City of Oakland forced them there. Fisher wants to build there and he wants the taxpayers to pay for the required infrastructure upgrades.
As for the affordable housing component, I'm pretty sure that if you're going to build a housing project of that size in California, some percentage of it has to be affordable.
And if you think that the only reason to require affordable housing is because the city "hates rich people", you're kind of telling on yourself.

To pace 40-120 you need to be 12-38 or 13-37 in first 50
The Rachel Phelps analogy is on point
All 30,000 seats.
Pay with poker chips?

Vegas from offering hundreds of millions for a new stadium near the strip.

That's the first thing I thought of as well

...and that's exactly what they did, going 13-37 in their first 50

As for the affordable housing component, I'm pretty sure that if you're going to build a housing project of that size in California, some percentage of it has to be affordable.
And if you think that the only reason to require affordable housing is because the city "hates rich people", you're kind of telling on yourself.

Exactly. Well said!
