Eagles writer: Giants have 4 of the worst division contracts

Vin_Cuccs : 5/25/2023 9:26 am
Warning: this is a long post!

Jimmy Kempski of The Philadelphia Voice posted articles reviewing the 10 worst contracts in the NFC East. See the link to the article below.

As a bit of a spoiler, he has the Giants with 4 of the 10 worst contracts in the NFC east:
1. Daniel Jones-Giants
2. DeMarcus Lawrence-Cowboys
3. Dak Prescott-Cowboys
4. Curtis Samuel-Commanders
5. Dereck Barnett-Eagles
6. Michael Gallup-Cowboys
7. Leonard Williams-Giants
8. Logan Thomas-Commanders
9. Adoree Jackson-Giants
10. Mark Glowinski-Giants

Kempski is always vitriolic and extremely biased, and this article is no different. This is the same writer who produces the "10 reasons why [your team] will be a dumpster fire" prior to the season.

I will never quite understand why writers from other teams, specifically Philadelphia and Dallas, act like fans as opposed to just reporters/writers. Say what you will about the Giants writers, but they are always professional and unbiased.

The funny part about this article is that any objective writer can see that the Eagles clearly have a smorgasbord of brutally awful contracts:

Fletcher Cox: 32 years old, significant decline in play. 1 year, $10 million, $20 million dead cap hit. 4(!) void years.

James Bradberry: 30 years old, 3 years remaining, about $1.25 each year, but cap hits of $3 million, $4 million, and $8 million, respectively. Dead cap hits of $20 million, $17 million, and $12 million, respectively. 4 (!) void years.

Darius Slay: 32 years old, 3 years remaining, about $1.25 each year, but cap hits of $11 million, $10 million, and $14 million, respectively. Dead cap hits of $46 million, $35 million, and $24 million, respectively. 4 (!) void years. His first 2 void years have dead cap hits of $14 million and $6 million, respectively!

Lane Johnson: 33 years old, 4 years remaining, about $1.25 each year, but cap hits of $14 million, $16 million, and $17 million, and $18 million, respectively. Dead cap hits of $62 million, $48 million, and $21 million, and $11 million, respectively. 3 (!) void years. His first void year has a cap hit of $22 million and a dead cap of almost $4 million.

Jason Kelce: 36 years old, 2 year deal, just over $1 million each year, cap hit of just under $11 million and $12 million. Dead cap of $35 million and $24 million, respectively. 3 void years.

Brandon Graham: 36 years old, 2 year deal, just over $1 million each year, cap hit of just under $10 million and $7 million. Dead cap of $23 million and $13 million, respectively. 3 void years.

AJ Brown: 25 years old, 5 years remaining, under $1.25 each year for the next 3 years, but $15 million and $30 millon the final 2 years. Cap hits of $5 million, $8 million, and $12 million, and $26 million, and $41 million, respectively. Dead cap hits of $39 million, $50 million, $42 million, $30 million, $20 millon, and $9 million, respectively. 2 void years.

Jalen Hurts: 25 years old, 6 years remaining, about $1.25 each year, but cap hits of $6 million, $21 million, $31 million, $45 million, and $54 millon. Dead cap hits of $110 million, $104 million, $90 million, $69 million, $44 million, and $24 million. 4(!) void years.

Sure, these are good players, but these contracts are awful! The more you research this roster, the more it looks like a ticking timebomb. One would assume, eventually, this will catch up to the team.

Say what you will about Schoen's dealings with Daniel Jones, Adoree Jackson, Mark Glowinski, and Leonard Williams, but they can get out of all contracts (except Jones) after this season with basically no penalty and Jones out is after next season with a limited penalty. Very team-friendly deals..

If you choose to respond on Twitter or via email, be careful, because sometimes he will post overly emotional responses on his page.

I think he is confusing bad contracts with the talent of the players. The writer may not love the player(s) on this list, but the deals are structured well. Sure, void years and playing with funny money are great to sign players, but bad contracts with lots of void years for aging players tend to be a recipe for disaster.

An interesting perspective from an opposing writer.

and I refuse to click on his reasons--but in what universe is Adoree Jackson a bad contract. Isn't this his walk year?
What a joke that is
Rudy5757 : 5/25/2023 9:35 am : link
The Eagles probably have the 10 worst contracts.
and yes the Eagles have some of the worst contracts
Essex : 5/25/2023 9:37 am : link
on paper in the division--but that would be without context. They are going for a world title this year and probably the next 2-3 years so they are going to do with the ramifications later.

Adoree Jackson wasn't a bad contract at all
AcesUp : 5/25/2023 9:43 am : link
The process was poor, yes. But it did work out. 12.5 AAV was perfectly fine for a CB of his caliber, even with the missed games. His cap number is only bloated this year because it was the last year of his deal.
Leo's contract is horrible.
BLUATHRT : 5/25/2023 9:47 am : link
Even though after this year it's off the books, the AAV of it is outrageous (Thanks DG).
Leo contract
AcesUp : 5/25/2023 9:51 am : link
Another example of poor process. Poor process was really DG's fatal flaw. He had a host of others as well but all the big ones stemmed from that. He was an unevolved scout working over his head as an executive.

exactly and it is not like the Eagles do not have some bloated contracts in their final year. This guy is a total clown. Plus, I think Jackson at his age is better than both Bradberry or Slay even though those guys get some much acclaim. Anytime the Eagles went against a team that can throw those guys got torched.

BFD. Just Win, Baby. The only thing that counts is your record. The rest of this crap is like a Fantasy League for Lawyers and Accountants.
This is a terrible list and very biased
PatersonPlank : 5/25/2023 9:58 am : link
As pointed out the Eagles have some terrible contracts, and frankly I'd start with Hurts. I don't think Jones contract is bad at all, and over time I think it will turn out to be a bargain. Jacksons contract is fine, and Dex deserves the money since he is arguably our best defensive player

A Biblical reference. I like it!
God knows I'm far from a big fan of Jones
Greg from LI : 5/25/2023 10:11 am : link
But it's ridiculous to call it a bad contract when he hasn't played a down since signing it. Whether it's a good or bad signing is yet to be determined.
Tons of risk with those contracts but I get it
Andy in Halifax : 5/25/2023 10:13 am : link
Lane Johnson for example - if he maintains his level of play for the contract (5 years from age 33 to 37) then they have a contract in those 5 years that is quite a bit under FMV and then a dead cap hit of $22,476,000 (void year). Obviously the 6th year sucks, but they get to extend their window by paying him well under market.

I think those deals for the older players are a huge risk but could pay off for them if they manage to stay healthy.

christian : 5/25/2023 10:17 am : link
By the end of this Summer, Jones will be 11th in the NFL in AAV. And effectively be on a 2/82M deal, with no new fully guaranteed money in years 3 and 4.

Jones is on the ultimate trust but verify contract. I maintain the Giants won that battle.

Jones is definitely not on a mega deal, and is closer to the Carrs of the world, than the Hurts.
Daks is the worst in the division IMO
UConn4523 : 5/25/2023 10:25 am : link
mainly because they will have to extend him to decrease his cap hit next year which means way more guaranteed money, and now they are locked in with him even longer. And Hurts is already better than him, and depending on how things go this year, for what Jones makes you can argue he’s a bargain compared to Dak.

‘Needs to look in the mirror ‘ of his local team when writing about bad contracts.
2 articles worth right there.
It's silly to criticize the Jones contract and laud the Hurts deal.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/25/2023 10:36 am : link
Both teams have placed big bets on their incumbent quarterbacks. The Eagles' bet is much bigger, reflecting their greater confidence in Hurts, which may or may not be justified. Taking into consideration the teams' different circumstances, I would say both deals make sense, and that neither can be judged as good or bad at this stage.

The structure of Jones's deal is relatively team-friendly, though it will obviously be painful to cut bait at the 2025 inflection point if he falls short of expectations. That's a similar situation to where the Eagles were with Carson Wentz in 2019: even as Wentz descended to a plausible worst-case outcome, the mistake only set the team's cap condition back by a year or two. (Of course, landing Hurts late in round 2 helped, as did the Colts "shopping hungry" for Wentz.)

Including Jackson and Glowinski seems gratuitous. He might as well throw in Tyrod Taylor, Parris Campbell, and Darius Slayton. Players do get paid - even Giants. The one genuinely bad contract is Leonard Williams, and that whole situation has been terrible for four years. We just need to hope he has a great year, now that the D-Line has some depth.
Isn't a bad contract when a player
fanatic II : 5/25/2023 10:37 am : link
doesn't finish the length of the contract.

Two examples from this off season, Golladay and Elliott causing dead money into the future cap years.

If a player plays to the end of his deal and is then not resigned. Was that a bad contract.

Dak's value is directly related to his health. If he shows he's not the future this year, they will designate him as a June 1 cut and account for the remainder of his bonuses over 2 years.

If he stays healthy and plays like he did in 2021, they'll happily extend him.
Gotta hand it to Kempski

In what world is paying 30 year old corners to big deals good?
no way

Adoree belongs on that list. He has a very reasonable contract for a corner of his quality.

a numbers crunching article that has nothing to do with actual football.

I hope Leonard Williams ruins Philly's offense in 2023. I wonder if this guy will own it. Nah, no one ever owns shit anymore.

Who was unhinged that the Giants could ever cut Bradberry and let him go to Philly. He’s not very smart it seems.
He should have said
Dave on the UWS : 5/25/2023 1:41 pm : link
“Highest dollar contracts”. Then it would be accurate. Other then Jones, the other 3 are done after this year ( Glowinski can be cut for a little dead money).
To me, they don’t qualify as bad contracts. They don’t impact the team more than 1 year.

exactly the Adoree Jackson listing is just weird. That was a rare good move by DG and a decent contract. Just because the last year is high does not mean it was a bad contract or even is one for this year.

I like Vin, but what's the point of this thread? This is meant to stir shit up. He's a homer who hates the Giants. Simple as that.
The Giants’ worst contract is STILL Kenny Golladay.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/25/2023 8:43 pm : link
His cap hit is nearly twice Glowinski’s.
Beyond stupid.
LauderdaleMatty : 5/25/2023 9:34 pm : link
Wiliams and Jackson are two very above average guys. Why redo their contracts when both are injury prone and may not be on the team next year.

Glowinsky? Really? And Jones isn’t close to s bad as Dak IMO.

And tbh Hurts can easily make that list. If he gets hurt or falls back? Opinion piece that totally ignores the the deals they give Kelce and the other guy who is old as fuck too
Sorry. graham
LauderdaleMatty : 5/25/2023 9:36 pm : link
He’s older than Leo by 7-8 years and has a two year deal. It’s not just cash.

At number 1 while zero fucking mention of the “almost mvp” contract. Philly is in for a rude fucking awakening.
