Rick Middleton traded on this date in 1976. UGH
For the original #88

Ken Hodge with the 1977 Ferguson Jersey! Esposito was already a GM convincing management to trade for one of his buddies.

This is from stories I have heard - I was born in 1974 so this is outside my memory.

Yup. And the MSG party line was that Nifty had to go because of the NY nightlife as if they didn't have bars in Boston. Don Cherry instilled and demanded discipline and the rest is history.

The Espo trade was a disaster too that could have been even worse. Ratelle (especially) and Park continued to excel. The Cat actually wanted Bobby Orr in the deal which would have far worse since he only played about 20 more games before injuries forced his retirement.
The Espo trade still makes me wanna hurl
averagejoe : 5/26/2023 12:02 pm : link
but Rangers did get to Finals with Espo vs Canadians in 1979. Won game 1 in Montreal and was up 2-0 in game 2. Went on to lose game 2 and were crushed in next 3 games.

Did not understand the trade then and dont understand it now.

The Middleton trade was even worse. Nothing to compare it to.

At least the Rangers (finally) retired Ratelle's #19 a few years ago. And, yes, while the Ratelle/Park trade lives alone in Rangers' history, the Middleton trade was awful too.

But hey, at least we got Gary Doak, right? Or did we trade him in the Ratelle/Park trade. Ugh - bad memories indeed.

Doak was gone prior to that. Joe Zanussi was the spare tire that went to the Bs
My first thought...

"Which fucking one?"
mention the name Ken Hodge around my dad
Greg from LI : 5/26/2023 1:20 pm : link
His reaction will be as if you insulted my grandmother.
Trivia: Middleton is 4th in career points among Rangers draft picks
Vanzetti : 5/26/2023 1:27 pm : link
He accumulated 988 points.

Can you name the three guys ahead of him?

Brian Leetch, Rod Gilbert, Doug Weight?
Greg from LI : 5/26/2023 2:48 pm : link
.
Leetch and Weight are right
Vanzetti : 5/26/2023 3:07 pm : link
Gilbert would be except he came to the Rangers two years before the NHL instituted the draft when the league was still under the sponsorship system

There is one other guy who was drafted
um.....Tony Amonte?
Greg from LI : 5/26/2023 3:21 pm : link
.
Damn!
Greg from LI : 5/26/2023 3:24 pm : link
Had to look it up. I always forget how high his eventual point total was.
