An interesting read on a Giants off day.
Link - ( New Window )
Kevin Zeitler, number 8.

Just for anyone thinking DG should have his reputation rehabilitated.
Jeez that stings,

Has Zeitler really been that good? Sheesh, I can't remember why he was released in 2020.

They didn’t resign him. Traded for him without a plan for keeping him. That’s roster building for ya.

He was released because he didn't live up to the contract and he was making a decent amount of money. It just goes to show you how much goes into success. Zeitler was really good in Cleveland and has been good after the Giants. Why was he not so good here? There are many reasons why GMs fail. You can see that getting the right coaching, culture, supporting cast, etc. all matter.

It seems like he's been pretty good every year, except the year he was here

He was released and it saved about 12 mil.

Because it’s better to have $12m than good football players?
What confused me about Zeitler
AcesUp : 5/26/2023 1:31 pm : link
Is that it wasn't like there was a bigger plan to reduce spending that offseason like we had last year. DG took a good chunk of that money and gave it to Kyle F'n Rudolph. Schoen had to then fix that mistake and give a similar contract to an inferior player in Glowinski last offseason.
He freakin sucked here
sb from NYT Forum : 5/26/2023 1:41 pm : link
...be it bad coaching, or not right for the scheme, or he just didn't want to be here and it showed in his play, but he was really bad.

And I believe he was a $14 million cap hit in 2021, a ridiculous amount for a guard.

I was glad they released him and still am.

Have to figure chemistry is a big part of Oline, and you can't be too excited to have Solder next to you (and whatever garbage was at C).
everything sucked here in 20-21

Not sure what your post means. You wrote they didn't resign him. That wasn't true. I was posting that they released him.
Yeah, as I recall,
Big Blue '56 : 5/26/2023 6:33 pm : link
he was pedestrian and that’s probably being quite generous.
Zeitler was okay but wasn’t playing up to the value of his contract.
Ivan15 : 5/27/2023 9:59 am : link
Part of that may have been the cast he was playing with. He had to cover the butts of the players to his right and left. Pugh had the same problem before he left. I think Zeitler was in the 4th year of a 5-year contract so the cap move was almost inevitable. He was, I think, 29-30 years old and wasn’t going to be part of the Judge rebuild.

He played near pro bowl level for most of his career. He came to the Giants during DG’s first salary cap purge.
Zeitler was very inconsistent

when he was here -- but you do have to wonder about our coaching staff now that he is shown to be above average before and after he was here

is there really anything left to wonder about judge or shurmur?
It’s the same phenomenon we saw with DJ.
mittenedman : 5/27/2023 10:16 am : link
Zeitler played in a dumpster fire here on an OL that got its collective ass whupped.

That’s what a good player in dysfunctional overall circumstances looks like. He was the same Kevin Zeitler he is now. He’s just on a much better offense.
And before anyone actually tries to defend Gettleman
Matt M. : 5/27/2023 10:26 am : link
because he's a good player, stop looking at every player in a bubble. The GM still hired the HC and coaching staff. So, if the player sucked on his watch, and so did nearly the entire roster, then that is on him.

It doesn't matter what Zeitler has done here. They traded for him intending for him to start. If he was any good while here, they likely would have extended him to reduce his large cap hit for a G. But, he sucked most of the time, so cutting him and saving the cap space made perfect sense. I have no problem with it whatsoever.

The new front office turned over more than 50% of the roster in one year and went to the playoffs. They seem to be on the up trend, so I'd like to trust them and their evaluations, since they've also made changes in scouting. To that end, their 2 biggest areas of need, interior OL and LB have seen some improvements already both in FA and the draft, so I'd like to see how things progress. I, for one, am excited to see Ezeudu and McKethan compete for the OG spots and even more excited for our rookie OC. Let's see where this goes.

It is when you're maxing out your salary cap credit cards on free agents to try to live up to your own blowhard ego like Gettleman was, after completely misevaluating the roster to begin with.
I think it also depends on the
DonnieD89 : 5/27/2023 12:30 pm : link
O-Line unit you are playing with. That depends on coaching and the talent that is playing next to you. Giants didn’t have that. Not giving Zeitler excuses, but the line as a whole was not good.
