He is looking for a new contract, and the Cardinals will undoubtedly be looking for some lofty compensation.
As a starting point: would you be willing to give up a conditional 1st round pick in 2024, and then pay him a Jessie Bates-type of contract: 4 years, $64 million with $36 million guaranteed?
On top of that, McKinney will certainly be looking for a similar contract...don't forget he is a free agent after this season.
Can this team afford to have two safeties making about $13 million to $15 million per year? If not, would you rather have Baker than McKinney?
RE: This situation is much more nuanced than simply acquiring Baker.

people said that about hopkins and they released him. id give a 3rd round pick for a rental only and get the comp pick back.

McKinney's a good player, but nowhere near the player Baker is, or Bates, for that matter. He does have age on his side, though, as he's a few years younger than both of them.
This looks to be a pivotal year for him. It doesn't appear that his hand will be an issue, and as long as he's healthy there's little doubt he'll be on the field for all but a handful of the defensive snaps (pun intended), and calling the shots on D as well. By all accounts he's well-liked by the staff and by his teammates. If he plays well, I figure the Giants will make every effort to re-sign him, as long as his demands are not unreasonable. If he expects to reset the Safety market, I think he's going to be disappointed.

Do you think it’s a given that we pay McKinney? “Smart, tough, dependable”, smart and dependable went out the window last year.

Haha, classic. One poor decision and that’s it? Out the window?
I’m guessing it’s a good thing you weren’t thrown out based some asinine decisions you made in your early 20’s…

Lol I definitely would have been if I violated terms of my contract.
Even before that I was never as high on McKinney as most are.

McKinney is not going to be resigned unless its a very team friendly deal. The guy is out all the time, and he is good but not great.
