Waller on ESPN: "they value our opinions here"

FranknWeezer : 5/26/2023 5:29 pm
Searched but didn't see this posted. Let me know if I need to delete.

Quote:
"Yeah, they value our opinions here," Waller said Thursday after standing out in the Giants' third OTA workout this spring. "As a player, I feel like a lot of places I've gone, you're told to do things a certain way and you do those things. But here it's like, they ask a lot of questions. They want to know what you're thinking, what you want to do more.

"So to offer input is a really cool thing because coaches and players have to be in partnership. We're all together and shouldn't be clashing with each other. We're all going in the same direction."

"It's different from team to team. I'm on my third now. There's different cultures everywhere you go. There is different types of energies," Waller said. "This is a really light place, a really fun place, a really empowering place where you just be yourself always. And as long as you're not putting the team at risk by getting a flag or things like that, you can really let your personality show.

"That's what I love about being here. It's just been fun. It's also been challenging. Guys holding you to a high standard since I got here and I try to reciprocate that."

Cool insight

from a player who I believe is going to have a big year, provided he stays healthy. Really goes to show how much a culture change was needed and how we could become a destination where FAs might want to play.
Love the “buy-in” vibe

Solidifies the view that Toney was never going to be additive to team chemistry, so glad we moved on!!
Daboll has a collaborative approach to management but

I don’t think there’s any doubt who is in charge. Sort of the opposite of the previous coach, who seemed to aspire to be a Belichik-style autocrat but always seemed to encounter resistance. The old guy was kind of a poseur. Daboll seems to be authentic.
Clearly he’s still upset with McDaniels

McDaniels, judge with their belichick light routine. Daboll is from the same tree but he got some seasoning in other stops after he left the nest. Obviously he’s his own man as well, all the other stops gave him a great perspective. I feel like we got the “good” stuff from the patriots way/ little bill without getting the “bad”
Man I hope this dude

Stays healthy, if he does he could be an all time Giant.
Daboll doing what good leaders do,

establishing a system that’s fortified by ideas and talents outside of his own. A coach may have brilliant strategy or inspirational gifts, but no single person knows all the answers. Dabs apparently recognizes that he can build a better team by learning from those he teaches.

I enjoy real insights like this instead of the usual vapid dribble they have to say to maintain pr status quo.
Waller praising Daboll, the staff and culture

much better than a bunch of FA olinemen "retiring" on Judge in the middle of offseason wind sprints.

Recall how hot he got in Jack Anderson's face after the backup OL false started on a key 3rd down snap. Dabes was really lit. Yet, after Darius Slayton's unbelievable drop on a 1st down making completion, if he had held on to the ball with no defender within 4 yards vs the Vikings, BD sought him out on the sideline to support and offer encouragement--we need you in this game. Doesn't get much more authentic than those. Heart on his sleeve, but always in charge.

If not mistaken, Dabs initially displayed quite a lot of anger after Slayton's drop, but he then went over to him and gave him encouragement. But your point is totally right. Authentic.

+1
Credit should also extend to John Mara for hiring Daboll and Schoen, who are both polar opposites of their predecessors. Mara blew it big time with Judge, abut he turned around nailed it with Schoen and Co.

A sharp turnaround like 2022 is hard to pull off, Mara’s apparently getting better advice and he’s listening to it.
Daboll

is the reality version of Ted Lasso in terms of the emotional intelligence he brings to the position. You can tell he genuinely cares about the players and motivates them by showing interest in their development.

Judge’s idea of the above was diving on balls during fumble drills.
