Are Jets or giants the top contenders for Hopkins?

NJBlueTuna : 5/29/2023 10:22 am
The jets make the most sense with their all in, SB or bust, approach. Put could the giants sneak in here? I just get this under the radar vibe of the giants creating a very good WR group (with Waller and Barkley) by finding a way to add DH. They would have to extend some contracts….which no one wants to kick the can down the road to create a 2-3 yr window for DH and any deep playoff run….but, again, it just seems like there is a “surprise” vibe going on here.

Thoughts?
I wish the Giants would

To me, the Giants are already a team that should be in the mix for the playoffs. So from that standpoint, yes Hopkins could be a final piece that pushes us further.
Man…
ZGiants98 : 5/29/2023 10:29 am : link
Hopkins
Hodgins
Hyatt
Robinson
Campbell
Slayton
Shep
Waller
Bellinger
Barkley

We would go from arguably the worst skill position group in the NFL to near the top overnight.

The Giants are not interested. He sat out the final two games while healthy. Giants don't need that attitude in the locker room

This sounds like BS. The Cardinals themselves said he had a nagging knee injury but might play if they were contending. So the Cardinals lied to everyone last year or are they now just trying to justify releasing him?
Seems like a really weird situation here.

Hopkins proved to still be a #1 WR in a bad offense. He clearly still has talent and he's not hurt. You can't find a lot of #1 WR's that shake free and if you do, it's probably because of money. Hopkins could have been had for a late pick and won't break the bank on a team that has a little space.

Nobody really tried all that hard to trade for Hopkins and now you really don't see teams jumping at him even as a FA.

Either his ask is out of control or there is something else going on that we don't know yet.
its not rocket science
BigBlueCane : 5/29/2023 10:50 am : link
He's been injured, busted for PED's, wrong side of 30 and completely threw his QB under the bus unprompted in a podcast.

Now you may agree with his assessment of said QB but still that's a red flag.
Red flags have never stopped the NFL
Kmed6000 : 5/29/2023 10:54 am : link
when there is production and while Hopkins missed half the year, he was on pace for 120/1400 last year with garbage QB play. He hasn't missed games because of injury outside of 1 year a few years ago and he's not hurt now.

Either he's asking for insane money or there is something else(maybe teams think he's going to get caught using again).
He's represented by OMNI which
mittenedman : 5/29/2023 10:57 am : link
is probably hurting his traction. NFL teams have been warned not to deal with them.
Why would the Jets or Giants be considered the top contenders for him

They need a #1 in the worst way if they want to stay competitive in that division.
Neither?

Don’t think the Giants are interested at all. But don’t really know. Jets I would think are a possibility along with the Bills, Chiefs, etc. Someone who thinks $20+m is a good investment.
If someone was willing to pay Hopkins 20M
Kmed6000 : 5/29/2023 11:17 am : link
he would have been traded.

Well, did you watch him in 2022? I did and he’s still a top 10 WR pretty easily. a long term contract doesn’t make sense but a 2-3 year deal does. Not saying we should or shouldn’t but this notion that he’s over the hill isn’t supported by his recent play.

I see cap space for next season is under 60 mil with no Jackson, Barkley and Williams under contract. I would keep signing our own and not sign someone who did not play when healthy which is on twitter so it must be true. If you extend Barkley Jackson or Williams you can create the cap space to sign.
Know the PERSON
Reale01 : 5/29/2023 1:19 pm : link
We don't know.

He would be a great mentor for Hyatt as well as a good get if ne has the make-up the Giants like. If not, no.
How much Better is Hopkins then Hodgins?
DavidinBMNY : 5/29/2023 1:29 pm : link
He 100x better? The price/performance for what we have seen from Jones to Hodgins is great value. Add in Campbell (or Shep or Wandale when healthy) And Slayon / Hyatt + Waller I think they have enough.

It would help them if Johnson could return and be another big bodied WR for when Hodgins can't play.

Now if Hopkins would take way less then OBJ then yeah consider adding him. But why would he take less then $15mm.

When it comes to big name WRs here at BBI a logical post like yours is sadly ignored by too many. People have posted 4-8 very solid reasons why he's most likely isn't on the Giants radar. Yours makes a ton of sense to anyone who is paying attention. But he's a big name and it's easy to make internet web site deals from a phone
Doesn't strike me as a JS/BD move
ColHowPepper : 5/29/2023 2:08 pm : link
Giants just signed Waller, Campbell, Hyatt, a re-sign of Slayton with WDR slated to return first half at latest. How many snaps does a DeAH take away from that group?

Schoen has, to this point, proven himself very careful in spending/committing cap dollars. Hopkins would use a fair amount. Maybe most important of all, I think Schoen and Daboll are serious about the character/chemistry of players they want here and the growth of the team from within. Perhaps they have reservations whether Hopkins would be a fit and additive.
Reminds me a little of Golladay
Chip : 5/29/2023 2:13 pm : link
not as a player but how this board reacts to WRs. I would rather see Barkley get paid than overpay for a Free Agent WR. OBJ got paid and set the market for Hopkins and I would not do it. I would rather see Thomas, Barkley, Williams and Jackson extended which will eat up a lot of next years cap space. Keep your own who play well here and know the system

His floor should be what OBJ got. Ravens kind of overpaid for OBJ to help facilitate the Lamar deal. It made sense for them. The fallout from that is that it nuked Hopkins trade potential and will limit his options on the market.
He would be a fantastic addition to the Giants
Rudy5757 : 5/29/2023 4:06 pm : link
It would immediately make the WR group a strengthinstead of still being a weakness. Saquon, Waller & Hopkins makes an amazing trio. Every other WR on the roster doesn’t scare anyone. Hyatt is our best WR based on potential and nothing else. The WRs benefitted from good coaching over talent and there wasn’t any good talent available in FA either.

I doubt it happens but he would be a great addition. No one on our roster is anywhere close to his level. It’s no comparison to the Golladay situation.

That's his salary floor for one year.
Hard decision

Glad its not mine to make. He is a true number 1 receiver, a difference maker. But he is also full of red flags, both are true. If on the right team in the right environment he could flourish, and he would take us to the next level skill wise. But if you get off to a tough start and you lose a controversial game, he might not be the ideal person to have your back.

I agree. The two arguments against it for the Giants are the shorter term cap and not being 1 player away, but I kinda don’t buy the second reason fully. We see teams like the Bills, Eagles and Rams make trades to greatly enhance their teams - it’ll likely take a trade for the Giants to get to that level as well.
I don't see us having the cap for him

If he wound up on the Jets. The Jets are going for broke this year because of the age of Rodgers. I actually think Hopkins will go to K.C.
I’d like him in KC

Mahomes is so enjoyable to watch and while the odds are minuscule, I like the possibility of Mahomes having a better career than Brady.

100% agree. Someone posted a stat yesterday that he generated the highest average space between he and his defender than anyone else in the league. He’s not washed at all.
The question is: What does he want?
81_Great_Dane : 5/29/2023 9:50 pm : link
Not how money does he want. What situation does he want?

Does he want to play with one of the top QBs he named? He didn’t name DJ, so if that’s what he wants, the Giants probably aren’t a big contender for his services. Does he want money and doesn’t care where he plays? There are probably other her teams that can pay more.

The Giants are sort of the in-between option. Good QB but not one his top guys. Team on the rise but not obviously ready to win a ring (unlike, say, KC, Buffalo or Philly). The Giants could probably clear enough cap space to give him a nice deal but not the most.

The Jets probably make more sense for him. Short window with Rodgers, win-now team…
In 2023 NYJ have 6.3 million in cap space
fanatic II : 5/29/2023 11:41 pm : link
In 2024 they are minus 43 million.

The team that makes the most sense cap wise is NE. They have 14 million this year and 122 million next year.
