NFT: Do you believe in ghosts?

Tom from LI : 5/30/2023 8:32 am
Preface to the story, the house we bought here in North Carolina has a weird feeling to it. We do hear weird noises coming from the third-floor attic. No, this house is not 100 years old. It was built in 2008. Supposedly the mother-in-law lived here on the second floor and stayed in what is my office, which was her living and kitchen area. No sink or stove. Just a countertop and cabinets. Right after she died the children sold the house.

We bought it in 2020 and it is an amazingly large and beautiful house.

Throughout my time living here, I am constantly getting the feeling that someone else is here. My wife also feels it.

Fast forward to last week and I had knee meniscus surgery, tibia & femoral condyle fracture repair. I have been under a lot of discomfort throughout the week.

Every night between 3AM and 430AM I am really uncomfortable (enough to wake me up) and then it subsides.

Next to our master bedroom is the screened-in 3 seasons room. We have a nest camera there watching the door to the deck. Behind the camera is my bedroom.

At 4:32 AM a circular orb appears in front of the camera and floats away.

We got notified that the camera saw something and in the morning my wife checked. I attached the link to the video.

scroll to the 40-second mark.

Now I am not a believer and I am looking for a logical explanation.

What do you think?

or spirits or afterlife, whatever you want to call it.

but that's not it.

Why Do I See Orbs In Video Footage?

Often, there are orbs or streaks of light on security camera footage when the camera is in night mode. If there is some type of light source behind, to the side, or even in front of the camera, then dust particles will be illuminated and show up in the video footage. The different types of light sources that can cause the illumination of dust particles include night lights, porch lights, street lights, spotlights, and vehicle headlights.

I needed some rational response.

So, I should just ignore the demonic whisper of "GET OUT YANKEE!" that I hear from time to time... it could just be my neighbor...

Best advice I can offer is to sleep with a gun next to your bed and just shoot in the general direction of the whispers. They hate that.

but have never seen a ghost or anything else supernatural.
I have seen a couple in my life- one was my great grandfather.
BLUATHRT : 5/30/2023 9:07 am : link
The house my parents built when I was a freshman in high school was severely delayed due to a really rainy summmer, so we went to live with my grandparents for a while. My grandparents had a split level they built in the early 60's and my great grandparents lived on the bottom floor almost all those years. My great grandfather and I had a very close relationship until he died when I was 6. He used to come in and tuck me in super tight when I'd spend the night. One weekend my parents and grandparents went to a casino while we were staying there over night. I was the only one in the house. I woke up tucked into the sheets so tight I struggled getting them off me. That next morning I was watching TV in what was his old recliner and saw him standing at the end of the hall smiling at me.

We had a a lady ghost in our first house that helped us look after our infant during many of our first months sleepless nights. I know it sounds crazy but she would walk through me sometimes (you could feel the chill) and them I would literally see her smoky figure keep going and turn into our bedroom. "Doris" would tell my wife to go back to sleep and she would calm the baby. Very bizarre and we just accepted it and never really even talked about our many, often daily encounters. Of course we were young, sleep deprived new parents but Doris had died in the bedroom of the house we had and was very kind and beneficial.

Anyway, fast forward a year or two and Doris exists in our memories like a fever dream we both shared and I tore down that house and built a new one in it's place and the memories just drifted away. In 2011, about 6 months after we sold the house the new owner called me and asked me if I ever saw anything unusual because his 3-year-old son was always talking to the nice old lady who hung out in the downstairs office with him. (The office was where our bedroom used to be.)

My wife was worried they were going to sue or complain and he just said, "Oh great, one more woman in the house to shift the balance of power."

We had never mentioned our ghost to anyone btw.

That 3 season room looks very cool. To answer your question, do I believe... I used to. But I think, now I do not.

When I was young I used to experience all kinds of strange things, mostly when I was in bed. I used to frequently wake up feeling like someone was literally bending over and putting there face next to mine. To the point where I would get up swinging... and then race for the light switch... lol. It used to freak out my ex-wife. Also I used to feel someone pushing down on whatever bed I was sleeping on... not hard but very noticeable short quick vibrations. I had told her about that and one morning she told me she felt it that night as well, and while it was happening I turned over from a dead sleep and said to her... "See?"

Nothing has happened or have I seen anything in so long now, I have lost my belief. I think that I was just doing those things in my sleep somehow.

Oh BTW, my ex-sister in law and her husband used to work for the with the Warrens on many of their excursions. So they thought I had attracted some soul that was following me around. I didn't really believe or agree... lol

recurring dreams - no sleep paralysis but ones where i lost my teeth, dreams where I woke up in jail, dreams where I won the lottery, dreams where I show up at class in college and it's the final exam and I haven't been to the class all semester, and some other standards now my dreams are less obvious.

My latest recurring dream (maybe 5 times the past couple months) is I show up to my hockey game late. I can never tell what team, but it's high school or college because it's at my home town rink and the place is packed. They are just about to drop the puck and I go in the locker room to get dressed. And I can't seem to get dressed in my hockey equipment. I keep making progress and then I check and the time is ticking down and it goes from first period to second period and I'm still getting my gear on. and I feel pressure to get out there because in my dream I'm the best player (or one of them) and the team needs me, but so far in all the versions of the dream I never make it on to the ice.

I did just retire from beer league hockey, less than a year ago, but I don't think that's it.

Sorry - didn't mean to hijack the thread, the comment about sleep paralysis made me remember my dream (I just had it again last night).

I'm 55. The pain is all in my knee and leg after the surgery and all. But I do get the prostate thing from time to time, depending on how much I drink before bed.

I thought dust, glare, bug, all of that. This is the only time in the 3 years we have lived here that the camera out there alerted us to something that wasn't obvious that I could explain easily.

I grew up in a house on Long Island that you could say was haunted. My mother use to say I feel protected here. I was like I don't.

lol.

It would be cool if it were, but overall I doubt it. I just can't get past the feeling something else is here in the house with us. It's hard to explain. From day 1 moving in.

My aunt's house in East Hampton
mittenedman : 5/30/2023 10:43 am : link
had all sorts of paranormal activity.

House was over 200 years old, and a few people died in it over the years in odd fashion, including the original owner committing suicide + a child that was killed.

There was a staircase going up to the 2nd floor which seemed to be the hotbed - my aunt had kept a lot of the original artwork from the house and the picture frames were ALWAYS going crooked up the staircase. You'd straighten them, and 20 mins later they were crooked again.

One night, I was staying in the 2nd floor bedroom and I heard the footsteps of a large, heavyset person walking up the stairs at 3 am. THUMPING up the stairs, like the heaviest steps you could imagine. I thought someone had broken into the house. When the footsteps reached the top of the stairs, they just stopped. Nothing.

One of the creepiest things I've ever heard.

Another time, a contractor who was working on the house went to the bathroom - when he came out, a picture that was on the wall was laying in the center of the room, on the floor. He slept in his car that night, and refused to go back into the house alone.

This story and BLUARTHRT's story is actually kind of beautiful and comforting.

As for disclosure, in Florida it's not required to disclose a "haunting." But to my knowledge, it hasn't been litigated in the courts. You do have to disclose materially known facts affecting the value, though. Could a lawyer at some point prove a particular and specific house having known paranormal activity (to the seller) that was not disclosed have a case? It's possible, but hard to prove.

I always advise to lean towards the most disclosure. In fact, if the listing had a seller's disclosure attached to it that referenced a benevolent spirit, for some buyers that would likely want them to buy the home, while even overlooking some physical negative defects. And for some, it would rule the home out. If asked specifically about paranormal activity, I would be truthful.

If you relayed your story in advance of the sale, it would likely not have resulted in any change. For one, many buyers would just write it off thinking you were a little, let's say, eccentric, especially those that don't believe in spirits.

I do believe, I don't have any great stories to share, there was one moment when I was a child and it was not a good one. There have been other times where I've felt a presence, but not necessarily a negative one. I have had very close family members that have had experiences. My mom's sister died in an overnight, single car crash when I was a boy. The night she died, her sister came to her in a dream and told her not to grieve for her. She then found out the devastating news later that morning.

But back to the sale implications of disclosure, if this is could be a relevant factor, I would certainly research the laws in your state related to disclosure in this area, as it differs from state to state. If the home is stigmatized, and the locals/neighbors now about supernatural/paranormal activity, a lack of disclosure could be problematic.

What's specifically interesting about your story is that the new owner of the home specifically asked you about this after purchasing. To me, that's a business opportunity, lol. Open that sucker up as a haunted B&B! Some people flock to places like that to hope to have an experience.

As for the video in the OP
allstarjim : 5/30/2023 10:47 am : link
My take is really unclear. It doesn't seem to have a consistent movement pattern that would indicate a dust particle, but could be some sort of small flying insect, but I would think there would be some variation in the body of the orb, and flying insects don't typically move that slowly.

It's undetermined, IMO.

The most paranormal
pjcas18 : 5/30/2023 10:53 am : link
or supernatural (if that's even what this is) experience I had was in my early 20's I moved with my girlfriend from CT to DC. One of my best friends father had been diagnosed with colon cancer, but it was early and prognosis was good.

After living in DC for a while, I woke up one morning and looked at my girlfriend and I said "I just had the weirdest dream. My friends father was in my dream and he appeared like a ghost and ascended up in spirit form to heaven". I think he died.

She thought nothing of it.

I went to work and just as I sat down my work phone rang and it was my friend's girlfriend calling from CT and I began to get a tingling sensation in my spine and she was in tears and she said my friend's father passed away that morning"

If I didn't tell my girlfriend when I woke up, no one would believe me, but there have been a couple more instances like that, but nothing as immediate and verifiable.
I’m skeptical, but definitely open to being proved wrong.
Section331 : 5/30/2023 10:58 am : link
A good friend of mine grew up in a 200 year old house near the ocean in Mass. She would often be wakened by a scratching noise under her bed, and the family joke was that it was a ghost. Years later, after my friend went away to college, an elderly woman knocked on the door and told my friend’s brother that she grew up in the house, and asked if she could take a look.

When they got to my friend’s bedroom, the woman said to the brother, “this is the room where the ghost dog lived. Does he still scratch the floor?” She went on to explain that the dog’s owner was a sea captain, and that his ship sunk and he died, and the dog would scratch the floor waiting for him to return. That’s the best I got.

I've written about my old house, in which my kids grew up. I could go on for hours with multiple unexplained things, sightings, things moving, things disappearing and re-appearing weeks/months later in places no one put them, and just a few years ago our now-grown daughter telling us about the little girl in the blue dress that she used to play with and that her mother and I had seen twice, vividly, but never mentioned to our kids. Crazy.

I believe completely after 25 years in that house.

For the record, we had our priest come in for a "cleaning" after about a year, and multiple happenings, and it did not make one bit of difference. It almost seemed like it was more of a challenge, then, to make contact with us. lol

Never felt threatened at all. But there was definitely something going on.

I sold my ex the house, and I haven't heard of any stories in the past couple years, but it's possible that I'm just more attuned to that stuff (although she DID see a few things I was seeing, simultaneously, and we have some of those "you're seeing this, too, right?" moments.

Funny ... I have the recurring dream that I show up late to one of my high school football games and no mater what I do, I cannot get all the equipment on properly an d that's all that's needed for me to run out and take the field. The game is under way and I can hear the crowd but I'm alone, failing to get all the under-padding in place.

my son (now 25) was maybe 1 year and a half? Still the age to be eating in a high chair. We'd moved into this large-ish house roughly 9-10 month prior .. so we were still working on furniture.

Was a bright, beautiful spring Saturday around noon. We'd been out running errands and stopped at the house for lunch. She and I sat on the couch and the boy was in the high chair nearby, just on the cusp of the dining room/living room.

We noticed our son at the same time appearing to play with someone or thing. It was as if a person was darting underneath the tray, then out, then up and behind him. He was giggling and looking everywhere to find this invisible playful friend. Went on for about 45-60 seconds, which is a long time for two people to confirm they're both seeing it!

As fast as it started, it was over and he went back to eating his food with no distraction. We were both like, what the fucking hell just happened? I walked over and around the back of the high chair. I asked my son if he was OK, and he said "yeah." Then I asked him if he was playing. Again, yeah. So I look at his mother and say, "who were you playing with?" and he answers "the people."

After that? Nothing in that house surprised us.

It will frequently alert us to "motion" that is usually just some kind of particle in the air briefly illuminated in front of the camera.

Once it sent me an alert at 1 AM that a person was detected in the backyard, which alarmed the hell outta me. Pulled up the video stream and it was just a thread from a spider web waving in front of the camera, with the light reflecting in such a way as to indicate a person.

What sealed it for me was my best friend and my wife years apart, hearing me mention shadow people and each one turned terrified. They explained the exact same phenomenon and my wife's sister asked her recently if she ever saw a figure in their childhood bedroom. She also described the exact same thing. Three well educated successful and honest people who are grounded and sane, it can't be nothing.

We hear children giggle and call for mommy several times a month and it's terrifying. We are awake at night, and lucid and we both hear it. I have no explanation or idea but it's something.

I have very similar dreams but it is either basketball, football, or soccer! It is always a game I really want to play in but I never quite get it fully together either, and similarly, it is usually or always a uniform or sometimes contact lens issue that delays me getting on the field. I have had these dreams for years on and off.

After that? Nothing in that house surprised us.

wow, three of us with similar dreams. I wonder what it means subconsciously.
Only thing I could think of with that

I needed some rational response.

So, I should just ignore the demonic whisper of "GET OUT YANKEE!" that I hear from time to time... it could just be my neighbor...

Best advice I can offer is to sleep with a gun next to your bed and just shoot in the general direction of the whispers. They hate that.

Lol, seems like a sound strategy.
Might want to get an EMF meter

Electromagnetic field (EMF) meters measure electrical fields in your house. There are instances where because of bad wiring or failing electrical motors you get areas in the house that have excessive high EMF numbers, outside the average. Some people are sensitive to that sort of thing.

Electromagnetic field (EMF) meters are commonly used to identify electrical problems. They’re also a staple of the ghost-hunter’s toolbox, reports Erika W. Smith for Refinery29. Neuroscientist Michael Persinger thinks normal variation in electromagnetic fields could be a possible explanation for supposed hauntings. He tested this theory in the 1980s by having people wear helmets that delivered weak magnetic stimulation. Eighty percent of his test subjects said they felt “an unexplained presence in the room” when they wore the helmets. What’s more, famous spooky spots like Hampton Court Palace have been found to have unusual electromagnetic fields, reports Neil Dagnall for the Conversation.

People don't believe me included until it happens to them. Also what will become frustrating is that the strange occurances will often happen randomly and over gaps of time just long enough that you doubt what is happening. But make no mistake if your waking up in the middle of the night with uneasiness somthing is not right going on in the house that chances are will not go away on its own. When it happen to me I bought all the best camera and listening devices available and I could never catch anything on tape it's as if it's aware and does not want to be caught.
