The Commanders announced Tuesday that they placed starting offensive guard Andrew Norwell on the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

The team will release him once he’s healthy enough to pass a physical, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports.

Norwell missed the final game of last season with a hip injury that he apparently has yet to fully recover.

He was due to make $4.42 million in 2023, including $1 million guaranteed for injury only, in the final year of his contract.

Norwell, 31, started 16 games at left guard last season and had four penalties.

He has played nine seasons for the Panthers, Jaguars and Commanders and earned All-Pro honors for Carolina in 2017. Norwell has never made the Pro Bowl.

Norwell could be an interesting Vet addition to the guard depth chart.

Why would you want a player

the Commies are releasing who has a hip injury? $4.4 mill isn't that much if he was expected to recover fully.

And wound up with Nate Solder instead lol.
I find it funny that he was an All Pro at one point

but didn't make the Pro Bowl. Why is the Pro Bowl tag still a thing?

of course he'd have to be healthy and pass a physical, but assuming he can, he could upgrade the position as an experienced vet.

our current offensive guards could get flagged for four penalties in one series.

Gettleman drafted him in Carolina and wanted him here very badly but got spurned. Get the impression, though, that he was somewhat of a disappointment for the Jags.
The key line in that is

When? If? Also, it appears the hip has healed but it's the elbow injury he played most of last season with that hasn't healed.

This sounds more like something that won't happen until we're into training camp and much closer to the season. Would they really release a solid starter if they thought he would be able to play. $4.4 million isn't much for a starting guard. Heck, add a voidable year to the deal. They drafted Stromberg, and if he starts, it's likely Gates replaces Norwell at guard.

Players like him don’t come to teams to be depth players. They can find a place to start and get a decent check for it
NYG has enough injury concerns up front

ridiculous guarantees/easily attainable lucrative incentives at the guy, yet he still opted for somewhere else. Now he’s most likely damaged goods, will be 32 in Oct. Screw him..
