Big Blue Banter speak highly of Isaiah Hodgins

DonnieD89 : 5/31/2023 9:09 pm
They also discuss potential with Colin Johnson. Very interesting take on both. They start talking about Hodgins at 7:15.

he's one of the biggest question marks. Is he really as good as he looked at times last year? If so, why the heck was he on the PS of the Bills?

If he's that good, then we lucked out.

i think we lucked out. it's a messy wr room in terms of figuring out playing time but id be pretty surprised if he doesnt lead them in receptions.
Great hands

Seems to catch everything near him. Can't wait to see him paired w Waller, Hyatt, Campbell and co.

What a difference from this time last yr

I think he's really good. He reminds me of 2007 Amani Toomer. Really good route runner and has great body control.
Maybe we get lucky...

... and hodgins can be Cameron Wake returning.
Wouldn’t be the first time someone slipped through the cracks.
bceagle05 : 5/31/2023 11:23 pm : link
He’s a big target, good hands, gets open, and finds his way into the end zone pretty often. I’m a fan.
Y28 posted this article on Hodgins awhile back
BSIMatt : 5/31/2023 11:26 pm : link
I feel like it should be required reading for Giants fans. The article was outstanding.

a couple of friends of mine who are more than casual Bills fans were pissed that Buffalo let him go last year. Maybe not a Cruz level find, but I think Hodgins has a lot of potential.

For what it’s worth, Bills fans were really upset they lost him and thought he had #1 potential when the Giants signed him off their PS. They wanted him to get playing time.

Sounds good to me
I think he is the real deal.
section125 : 6/1/2023 3:59 am : link
He gets open and has very good hands. He is a touch on the "slow" side but with the addition of Campbell, Waller and Hyatt, teams will not be able to double him like the Eagles did in the playoff game. He will be Jones' security blanket - the guy Jones looks for on 3rd and 8 type situations.
Toomer is a good comparison, although Toomer could run away from people.

I agree. He caught 77% of his targets last season. He just finds ways to get open and he catches the ball.

Sometimes teams make mistakes. Sometimes teams don't see the value of their own guys.

Perhaps the Bills playbook didn't fit his strengths. Perhaps the coaching staff just gave up too early on him.

Rod in St Cloud : 6/1/2023 8:50 am : link
He had no drops. Philly's defense stated he was the only one they were concerned about. Maybe we did get lucky!
People are obsessed speed
LauderdaleMatty : 6/1/2023 9:09 am : link
And IIRC it's it like he came out of some football factory. I'll stand by my over repeated statement. You can find good to sometimes very good WRs all over the draft. That Buffalo may have left him exposed shouldn't be surprising. Happens.

Like Slayton. He doesn't have to be great. Just solid and reliable. Anything more is a home run
He's just lacking breakaway speed
Heisenberg : 6/1/2023 9:11 am : link
He's shown good hands and good route running. And he makes contested catches (necessity when you're not fast) And he's also a really solid blocker at WR.

All he has to do is show it again.

Same. One of my best buddies is a very serious Bills fan, and he was not happy about it.

His thinking was the Bills thought they had a sort of diamond in the rough hidden on their practice squad, which works fine until the guys who know your roster move on to somewhere else.
It's
Eric from BBI : Admin : 6/1/2023 9:46 am : link
not common for a team to nab a potential long-term starter off another team's practice squad. It happens, but it's rare.

Have the Giants ever done that before?
In the NFL sometimes all a guy needs is a chance
arniefez : 6/1/2023 9:51 am : link
and to be in the right place at the right time with a coaching staff let plays them to their strengths. The Bills have vet receivers who were blocking him and they are in win now mode, not development mode. The Giants were desperate for a live body at WR and Hodgins got his chance with Daboll/Kafka who knew how to use him and he opened a lot of eyes. I listened to the podcast and I agree with their comments.

I'm excited about the Giants 2023 WRs and TEs on paper. If the OL can pass block I think the Giants are going to make a lot of big plays and narrow the points scored gap on Philadelphia and Dallas.

Some of us have been begging the Giants to increase their team speed on offense for a decade. On paper this is might be the fastest Giants team of the Super Bowl era.

There is speed at RB, TE and especially WR now. Hopefully the Giants have better luck with injuries this year and when they play the Cowboys game one Saquon, Waller, Campbell, Hodgins and Hyatt are on the field for a lot plays at the same time.
Hodgins is a receiver in the Biletnikoff/Proehl mode. He's not fast

Derrick Ward?

Granted, he was part of a RB committee, so it doesn't completely meet the criteria you laid out, but even if that's basically what we end up with from Hodgins (he's pretty much already there, IMO), I would be very satisfied.

Beyond the Giants, Brandon Marshall (LB, not WR) began his career on Jacksonville's practice squad before signing with Denver - he would probably meet your criteria. He's the only one I could find though (other than Cameron Wake, who has been noted already and went from the Giants, not to), which obviously strengthens your point.
They also talk about Colin Johnson,
DonnieD89 : 6/1/2023 10:10 am : link
mentioning his reliable hands and fluid motion. It would be very interesting to see if he continues to do what he did last year before his injury. Fans have been screaming for a big bodied wide receiver. Now they have Waller, who is being called a WR1, Hodgins. Johnson, and Wheaton. Who is going to be released with a very crowded wide receiver position. What’s going to happen with Bryce Ford Wheaton?

kevin boothe was here for 7 years and started 48 games as a giant.

hedgecock had a shorter window bc he got hurt but he actually made all pro that first year i think.

I thought about Hedgecock, but he wasn't around that long.

I believe Boothe was claimed off of waivers.

We still have huge question marks at WR. All of our receivers
Rich_Houston_1971 : 6/1/2023 10:42 am : link
are average with questionable speed and there are serious injury concerns with at least 4 of them. I don't know how Hyatt will pan out. But we really need at least one Marquee WR like a Jamar Chase.

Really?

Which of our Wide Receivers have questionable speed?

Jalin?
Campbell?
Slayton?
Robinson?
Smith?
Crowder?

they are all sub 4.4 40 runners

you must have meant to post this last year

Questionable for various reasons but I don't think the group's overall speed is questionable compared to the last few seasons. Campbell, Slayton, Hyatt, Robinson (unofficial 4.38), Crowder (unofficial 4.39 but he's getting up there in football years) and (if he makes it) Ford-Wheaton are all fast. All 4.40 and under. Then add in Barkley and Breida and then Jones who has been clocked at 21MPH. Darren Waller is fast for a tight end at 4.46.

He's Giants karma for McCaffrey and Jurevicius. A tall WR, but not white though.
One clarification: Hodgins was claimed off waivers.
Big Blue Blogger : 6/1/2023 11:19 am : link
He had been on the practice squad to start the season after clearing waivers. (That was his second trip to the waiver wire, BTW. He cleared waivers in 2021 as well, before being signed to the practice squad.) The Bills signed him to the active roster when Jake Kumerow got hurt. Then they waived him again when they activated Kumerow. That's when the Giants finally claimed him.

It's such a weird history. Schoen and Daboll were part of the organization that exposed Hodgins to waivers in 2021, then they passed on him at cutdown time in 2022 when they were using their favorable position on the wire to claim Anderson, Layne, McCloud and Pinnock. As far as we know, they didn't pursue him on the Bills' practice squad in September either. They finally claimed him two months later - from a much lower waiver position - when he hit the wire again and the Giants' WR corps was dissolving.

It's reasonable to infer that the new regime didn't think all that highly of Hodgins until he got here. We don't know the extent to which he has won them over since. Come September, he seems like a good bet to start. On the other hand, I wouldn't be completely shocked if he didn't make the initial roster. Surprised, yes. Shocked, no.

What's the weather like on your planet?
Campbell
giant power : 6/1/2023 8:08 pm : link
ran an official 4:31 at the combine. You can't get much faster than that. He had a rocky start to his his career with injuries but he is coming off a very good injury free season playing on a horrific offense. He is trending up, not down. The problem the Giants are going to have with Campbell is trying to keep him a Giant after this season.

My prayer is that we lucked out and got a solid WR. A guy who can catch what is thrown his way and produce just enough, game in and game out.
