NFT: Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Thoughts? *Spoilers*

Jim in Forest Hills : 6/1/2023 10:08 am
I know there is a ton of superhero overload. Many including myself have lost interest in Marvel content, I dont think I enjoyed a movie since No Way Home. I dont go to theaters and I still havent watched Antman whcich is now on Disney +. But...

I think James Gunn is a little different and I wanted to watch his swan song. Caught this past weekend and I really enjoyed it. It was too long, they could have cut out some extraneous stuff but Gunn made me feel stuff about raccoons and otters, rabbits and walruses.

Also really like the Gamora/Quill dynamic and his decision on their ending.

That tunnel fight was a lot of fun.

Adam Warlock was ok, some good humor there but people that powerful are difficult to write since they tilt the field so quickly.

But I was invested in the characters and really did think Rocket was gone (which might have been better) but I did enjoy his direction and I know comics have to keep going.

That being said I dont think I'm watching another Marvel movie unless it gets sterling reviews. Did you all catch it?
I watched it

and I thought it was pretty good. I too have had the superhero overload and have not kept up with the Marvel content as of late. I always liked the Guardians of the Galaxy movies especially their choice of music and the dynamic of the team.

I thought Dave Bautista did another great job, sad to hear that he won't be playing Drax anymore. He took a boring character and made him quite hilarious.

Adam Warlock was meh, I thought it was a little late adding him in. He should have been added before the Infinity War series of movies. This late in the game I thought they could have left him out.
Saw it last night

Think it’s the best series of the Marvel world. This one was as good as any of the others. Just a lot of fun.
I saw it

I agree that the Every part of phase 4 has been garbage with the exception No Way Home and Loki. I really enjoyed Guardians volume 3 and I really liked how they tied it all up in the end. I was expecting Rocket, Drax, and Gamora to die because Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana both came out and said that they weren't doing anymore Marvel movies after this. It was a good movie filled with humor and heart.

This was a final arc story for the orginal GoG characters

This movie was more an epilouge story for the characters then pointing to a bigger phase story in the future.

The Movie had alot of good humor and fight scenes. The nostalgic music list moved from the 90's into the 2000's by the end of movie.

I think Marvel has a problem with the new phase because how do you outdo Endgame? Especially with the introduction of alot of actors/actresses that do not have much of a screen presence going forward.

I went to a convention recently and one of the writers from one of the Phase 1 movies told me the challenge is getting the Millenials into hard core comic book stories. The First Phase did not have this problem because Gex X grew up with the default superheroes. Many of the New superheroes in nthe New phase are offshoots and need to generate a fan base for the next phase to be successful..he said that was a big challenge
maybe better writing that doesn't soley focus
Dave on the UWS : 6/1/2023 10:39 am : link
on "the message" and instead focuses on character development, story, cause and effect, would help a lot. All these stories feel like they are written by 6 year olds in their basement.
Iron Man was good
Spiciest Memelord : 6/1/2023 11:10 am : link
and so was the first two-thirds of the first Avengers. Every comic book mive pretty much sucked ass since then.

There are a lot of rumors about Avengers Secret Wars that explain how Marvel is trying to outdo Endgame. It sounds like Avengers Kang Dynasty will see the Avengers lose and then the survivors navigate the multiverse to collect hero's from different universes to battle Kang in Secret Wars. They will bring back Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Hugh Jackman, for that movie plus Robert Downey Jr. along with numerous others.
Was it just me or
superspynyg : 6/1/2023 11:22 am : link
did they build up Adam Warlock as adversary only to make him a complete tool?

I thought main villain was very lame.

I though it was overall worth seeing.

I liked it. Like most movies there are things I would have liked to

see differently. James Gunn does incredible work. I'm really excited to see his DC reign in full-force. The peacemaker series was awesome.
I really enjoyed it
Bramton1 : 6/1/2023 12:11 pm : link
The first two GOTG movies were fun popcorn flicks. This won was far more emotional.

It turns out superhero fatigue is not a real thing. The fatigue is for bad superhero movies. People didn't pay for Eternals and Quantum-mania, not because they were superhero movies, but they was BAD superhero movies. Make something like No Way Home or GOTG3, and people will come.
While I enjoyed it a lot

Gunn really made sure he was no George R R Martin.

And tbh the last half hour you need of utterly suspend any rational thought. Rocket is dying but gets thrown around enough to kill him even if he didn't have a bomb bout to go off in his chest

Quill always had that helmet then he doesn't for the last seen for him to suffer literally no damage. Gamora and the Ravagers looked like the crew from St Elmo's fire hugging it out at the end.

Marvel is stuck now. You can't just have a really good story. Everything has to be part of sown huge saga w not only galactic implications but now the multiverse is also at risk. Then it isn't. Than it is.
I don't really look at many movies over critically
islander1 : 6/1/2023 1:28 pm : link
So some of the suspension of reality is ok.

I'll just say, my wife and I were both b like "we didn't know we'd need tissues for c this movie". She went as far as to say that she's not sure when she'll be down for watching it again - it was pretty emotionally draining for her.

Yea it was definitely an emotional rollercoaster. At least once during the movie I thought that Rocket, Star Lord, and Drax were going to die. I never expected to feel as sad as I did when Lyla, Floor, and Teefs died. Gunn did an excellent job creating an emotional attachment to them with little screen time.
Best Marvel movie since Endgame

Up there with all but the very best of the Marvel flicks of the first few phases. The rest of Phase 4/5 has been a mess though outside of No Way Home, Scarletvision and Loki. They've stretched themselves too thin and are putting projects in the hands of inexperienced people without any passion for the source material. With Gunn leaving for DC, they've had a lot of talent drain creatively. Quantamania was a disaster and suffered from basically everything they got wrong in Phase 4 (shitty/rushed CGI, overused tropes, lack of stakes or consequences, forced humor, etc). I have a feeling DC becomes the more compelling movie universe and Marvel continues to chase its tail going forward.

That is definitely not true. GotG 2 was released in May 2017, Infinity War in April 2018. Gunn wasn't fired until July 2018, after Infinity War was released.

You're right it was supposed to release May 1st 2020 just after endgame.
I may be in the minority, but I'm not in

superhero or Marvel overload. I will admit that there have been some stinkers, but I'm chalking that up to Covid delaying things, along with some poor casting, and too much too fast. But I think they realize all of this and are trying to do something about it.

On to Guardians, I had mixed feelings. Like I mentioned above, Covid delaying this, plus the firing and rehiring of James Gunn, just put a little too much age on these characters and to me, just disrupted the flow of things a bit. But like you mentioned, Gunn knows how to make a good movie, and he delivered.

I did have really high expectations for this, and the results landed a bit under those expectations. I really liked the villain, but in the end, they really didn't struggle taking him down so much compared to the first 2 movies where you felt a real sense of doom. And Adam Warlock was a miss for me.

I think after Captain Marvel, the quality of Marvel movies will get better. They do have some good stuff coming down the pipe.

This is almost exactly how I feel about the MCU and GotG3 in general. I think it would have made the movie even better if we did actually have some loss in it whether it be Drax, Rocket, StarLord, etc. They made it seem multiple times like it was going to happen only to pull then out at the very last second as always.
