NFT: Senior Medical Alert systems

BlackLight : 6/4/2023 9:58 pm
Anyone have any experience with any of these systems, like Lifeline - where you have a medical emergency, can't get to a phone, so you press a button, and this whole mechanism takes over for calling an ambulance and getting you care?

Mother is 75, had an emergency last night - pneumonia causing shortness of breath and panic attack. Her husband has advancing Alzheimers and wasn't able to make sense of dialing 911. Long story short, she was finally able to summon EMTs who got her to the hospital. She's probably going to be okay, but now we're thinking about the next time this happens, and how we can streamline the process of getting her help quickly.

99 y.o. dad has it. Works well. I believe it is $19.99 mo. You can have a list of contacts and phone numbers and it is through central station monitoring. Dad has a lanyard so when walking around or in another room he can simply push a button and EMS is dispatched. It is so quick that most times I get the call altering me EMS was just dispatched and by the time I call him EMS is on site.

I see that other companies are using Amazon as a platform for their services, but I'm not seeing where Amazon has their own service.
Bay Alarm Medical..

they have the lanyard and a bracelet. They have two packages, one just for in the home and one for both home and mobile.

They also have a fall detection system.

Their customer and tech support have been very good, which has been especially helpful to me since I live a 1000 miles away from my mother…

This is the best, used it for mom’s later years and it was comforting when we, sadly, had to use it.

Get the fall detection, it works. They also have call buttons that you can place on a table or wall. I found these were more for comfort that there were options.

You can set up your own phone tree, which can revert to 911 if there are no live answers. There are live people calling, so you can even leave diretions with them if there are issues 911 should know about (such as access), or the location of medical info.

I looked into this a lot at the time, chose them, zero complaints. I didn’t get the cell enabled version because mom would not be roaming without assistance, but it’s available.

Wishing you the best as you care for your mom and dad.

sure your mom will wear it. My mother has one that she decided she didn't like to wear and leaves it on the table next to her chair.
One day she fell in the bathroom and was only found because a neighbor came over. My mother wasn't sure how long she had been there.
Even after that, she said she didn't like the necklace and won't wear it.
I'm out of state from her, and wish she'd just put it on.
I use bay alarm for my mother

She has needed it twice. They had the EMTs there quickly. They use the code to access the key lock box. I think its $320 for the year. Well worth the peace of mind.

Alarm works great. They encourage you to test it out once a month.

Bay Alarm comes with a wrist band that you can put the sensor/button in.

Having a key lock box is great. I didn't know that was a feature. I went through many ambulance calls for my Mother and Wife. They always ask if there is a door that is unlocked. I was going to suggest to not lock a door when at home if they live in a safe place. That and trying to carry my phone with me is what I do now that I am alone.
Not to get too much into this…

But we had a folder of medical directives (e.g. DNR) so that Bay Alarm could let
EMTs know where to find information that might affect treatments. Putting all this together involved constructive conversations.
Apple Watch Option
jamalduff123 : 6/5/2023 5:16 pm : link
Some people are using apple watches for this purpose. You can set it up to call you when it detects a fall, or if the user is immobile for a certain duration. Not for everyone, but if you think she's more likely to wear the watch than the other types of devices it could make sense. More up front cost, but cheaper over time without the monthly subscriptions.
