Spotrac predicts Andrew Thomas extension

Ben in Tampa : 6/6/2023 12:06 pm
Along with the entire 2020 first round draft class. Here’s the write up on Thomas:

Quote:

The #3 graded offensive tackle for 2022 according to PFF becomes extension eligible at the perfect time. A much improved team, a QB1 with a new contract, and three straight years of exponential improvement on the books.

Calculated Valuation: $21.4M per year
Current Position Max AAV: $25M (L. Tunsil)
Current Position Max Guarantee: $64M (R. Stanley)

Prediction: Back up the brinks truck. The Giants don’t necessarily have to rush this, as Thomas’ final two rookie contract years currently align with Daniel Jones’ practical guarantees, but locking in a franchise left tackle for the foreseeable future is never bad business. Thomas signs a 4 year, $88M extension ($107M over 6 years) that includes $60M practically guaranteed.

Nice having draft picks worthy of a 2nd contract here

Hopefully this will get done and at those rates.

Risk vs reward

The risk to a player is injury.
The only way to get a “ bargain”
Is to offer a package with significant
guaranteed money now- eliminating the
player’s risk of getting injured before the
big payday.
Give him a Tryon Smith type deal

Tyron Smith signed a 8 year, $97,600,000 contract with the Dallas Cowboys, including a $10,000,000 signing bonus, $22,118,013 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $12,200,000.

Obviously a long time ago, so numbers need to double, but still, this contract gave the Cowboys tons of flexibility and low CAP hits. His reported 12.2M/yr deal counted at half that for the first 3 years.
CAP HIT
~5M, 5M, 6.8M, 8.8M, 17.5M, 15.5M, 6.4M, 7.4M, 17M, 8M...7M Void Year

It's always nice to read poetry in unexpected places, but rhyming "the" with "the" feels a bit amateurish.
We'll see but JS may wait another year imv

Great to finally have a legitimate upper tier OL who happens to be a LT who is still very young. Eagles had Peters and now the current LT. Dallas has had Smith and WFT had Williams.

First big time OL from the draft since Chris Snee.

It makes ANO SENSE for AT yo sign that if you think that that contract has to DOUBLE. 20 mill signing bonus and 44 million gtd? He should laugh at that.
