The best pitcher I've ever seen, and a helluva hitter, but his body couldn't support what he does on the mount. TJ surgery may help but we won't know until 2025, probably.
feel bad for the guy. i think texas had some protections in that deal but he's now going to be 36 the next time he throws a pitch in the big leagues.
Very limited protections. First 4 years are fully guaranteed. 165 in guarantees.
The Rangers have made their huge rotation splash, announcing agreement with Jacob deGrom on a five-year contract. It’s a reported $185MM guarantee, and the deal also includes a full no-trade clause. The VC Sports Group client will make $30MM next season, followed by successive $40MM salaries in 2024-25, $38MM in 2026 and $37MM in 2027.
The contract also contains a conditional option for the 2028 campaign, with salaries dependent on the health of deGrom’s arm over the first four seasons. If the hurler undergoes Tommy John surgery or suffers any elbow or shoulder injury that leads to a 130-day injured list stint within a season or a full calendar year absence over multiple campaigns, a club option would kick in. That’d be valued at $20MM, but it’d jump to $30MM if deGrom posts a top-five Cy Young finish at any point during the deal or tallied a cumulative 625 innings over the next five seasons. It’d go to $37MM if he pitches 725-plus frames or secures three top-five Cy Young finishes.
Even though he's no longer with the Mets, I still feel horrible about
this news. I'm a Mets fan and will always have love for Jake. It's that simple. My brother has a jersey of his that he loves. We all thought that what he did was superhuman. It was a matter of time before things stopped working like they used to.
He's one of those guys you just wish could have stayed healthy because he was on his way to doing unprecedented things much like Odell with the Giants. Such a shame...

so they get 1 extra year on the back end at $20m now if they want it? or they scrap the deal after the first 4 to avoid paying the full 5th year?
and since rehab best case is probably 15 months (septempber 2024), at most they will get 2 full seasons (2025/2026) out of the first 4 before deciding on the partially guaranteed year 5? and those will be his age 36 and age 37 seasons.
i assume they tried to insure the deal but man that doesnt not seem like a very protective contract at all.
me. 185 guaranteed, no insurance. It would have been 222 over 6 if he hit certain thresholds and didn't have a major injury. He's owed 185 over the next 4.5.
His 2024 is going to be a wash too. 2 years of nothing and 2025 is a big question mark frankly, given this being another surgery, other arm issues in previous years also somewhat.
Rangers gambled here (I understand why) but lost. They're off to good start but I don't see it sustainable and they are a team despite some owner cash, don't have ability to swallow 75 million of payroll and go out and re-spend that.
Such a dumb ass move by a team that has made so many dumb ass

To clarify: Full extent of surgery will be determined once Dr Keith Meister gets inside of elbow. For now: Ligament repair. That doesn’t rule out something like an internal brace. Either way: Out at least 12 months
Jacob deGrom is on the right team if he's looking for inspiration. Teammate Nathan Eovaldi would be an all-star (maybe even start the game for the AL) if the game were held today and he has had 2 Tommy John surgeries himself
There is no way anybody should have offered him more than one year at his age with his injury history. Texas did Cohen a HUGE favor. His stuff was great but he was a starter that had trouble pitching a 100 inning season. That contract was going to self destruct the moment he signed.
I knew either Texas or Anaheim would have to eat his huge contract. They always overpay the wrong players.
That's a stupid move by the Rangers not to insure it
And, this is the reason I said way before the season ended last year that the Mets should let him walk. When healthy, he was the best pitcher in the game. But, he wasn't very healthy before this.
When will teams start moving away from this nonsensical 100%/max effort every pitch philosophy?
DeGrom, first half of 2021 was as good as a pitcher has ever been...

If you havent seen the clips of his presser go check it out, hard to watch him that upset.
Wish him the best in recovery
He won two successive Cy Youngs while going 21-17 in 64 starts. So, despite posting ERA's of 1.70 and 2.43, 40% of his starts in those two seasons were no decisions and a quarter of them were losses. What kind of run support were his teammates not giving him? What was the bullpen doing?

Glad he got his payout, and glad it wasn't with the Mets.
Fortunately, so far, there best investment is overcoming this dumb investment: Bruce Bochy.
possible career ender at his age.
One of the most dominant pitchers I've ever seen at his peak, unfortunately his peak was pretty short since he was always hurt.

Yeah, I wished the Mets had gotten Bochy. Not sure if he would have come to NY. But what a manager.

7-2 on a mediocre team, 1.08 ERA (crazy), .554 WHIP, 14K's per 9 innings and about 12 games in, he had more RBI's than runs allowed.
Really, really sorry to hear this, no schadenfreude on this one, even if the Mets dodged a major bullet ultimately.
I feel as bad for him as you can feel for someone with 200 million dollars.
Young man, beautiful family, a lot to live for but devastating for any athlete.
Feel for the dude. He's a helluva talent.
