1.6 million dollar cap hit if cut
The giants seem to have invested a lot of money in a kicker who never pins the other team inside the 10 yard line Scottish hammer - ( New Window )
no one was brought in to compete with him last year (or this year so far). He is horrible. No sense of directional punting and too often out kicks coverage or kicks into the EZ. At the very minimum, they need to bring another punter or 2 to camp to challenge him. Improving field position and pinning teams deep in their territory are well worth $500,000.
Gillan is just about to turn 26 next month. He had a solid second half of the season and tie that directly with our new coaching staff working with him.
You can't teach having a strong leg and if the Giants coaching staff continue working with him, I can see Gillan keep on improving the next two years. If he doesn't, he'll be easily replaceable next off-season.
I swear, some of you guys just like to complain for just the sake of complaining.

Yup. How about we focus on having him punt less...
He made a bad first impression on us Giants fans but
He played a major role in the Giants winning that game with the Titans. He had 5 of 6 punts downed inside the 20 and Titans had bad starting field position for most of that game.
Games 2-9 were simply not good and the driving narrative a lot of BBIers remember when discussing him. In 8 games, he had 33 punts with 6 going for touchbacks and 6 being downed inside the 20.
Although in his following 6 games, he really showed improvement in games 10-15. Where he had 28 punts with only 2 going for touchbacks and more than half his punts with 15 being downed inside the 20.
Bottom line, we ALL give this coaching staff a ton of credit in developing a lot of young players on this roster. How come we can't do the same with Gillan who showed a marked improvement in the second half of the season?

bring in. Is there really that much of a risk that it would get worse? Watching line drives that land at or inside the 5-yard line and bounce into end zone are deflating.
he’s a serviceable Punter. Apparently the Giants like his athleticism and his strong leg. He also puts a different spin on the ball, which makes it harder to catch. I think he gets this year to further prove himself or he’s gone.
Jeff Feagles is the New York Giants career leader in punts inside opponents 20 yard line with 178.
Personally not a fan of Gillan. too erratic if nothing else, don't know what to expect from one punt to the next
And yet, Gillan's % inside the 20, both as a Giant and career, is better than Feagles'. His TB % is close too, though as a Giant it's much worse than Feagles'.

The rule change is for kickoffs, not punts.

This is basically true, but as Eric pointed out, he was improving during last season.
Depends how you define "ain't broke." He's still breathing and under contract, so I guess that qualifies.
You left out net average, which is a more important stat. He ranked T-26th there (and it was a 4-way tie, so 26th is being generous).
It's broke.

The opponent inside the 10 may not be a skill that is needed anymore. Once a team is inside the 50, maybe the just go for it on 4th down. No strategy.

Sorry! Right. Dumb comment. I didn’t get my coffee today.

Good point.
He had a bad stretch and got better. He ended up OK so he did well to make up for it; he doesn't suck. He might get better. In fact he probably will.
We got 99 problems and he aint one.

exceptional holder for Gano. Don’t think I want to mess with that either.

Yeah. He’s got a great leg..Just needs to learn Feagles-ness
