NFT: The Great Quebec Smoke Plume of 2023

Rich_Houston_1971 : 6/7/2023 2:08 pm
I am in Union County NJ and it is very hard to breath the air. It is very acrid and dark grey outside. At 4pm EST there is a massive Plume being reported that is going to hit the tri state area. Does anyone know if there is a state OEM response to this? I am really concerned because I have alot of elderly neighbors.

What can the state do?

Open shelters for clean air,

Local governments should definitely be doing that, just as they open cooling centers during extreme heat days (at least they do in NYC).

Reportedly the league has been "monitoring" it all day. I agree with you that it seems likely, we'll see.

Lol, are you saying people are getting high and lighting fires in the woods? Or that it is from all the Canucks smoking schwag?

Either answer works for me.

It was 350 in Chico during the 2018 fires in CA.

270 in Berkeley for two days.

The Honeywell air filters really help

Rich’s suggestion was perfect. Total panic! Yup they will help.
Oh and for the record, there was a Poor Air quality alert this morning, strongly advising people, particularly the elderly and people with respiratory issues to STAY INSIDE. That would seem to be good advice.

This is what I've been following on my phone all day.

Despite it visually looking better over the last couple hours in Midtown, I just see this Air Quality Index continue to soar.

Based on when I looked at my weather app; it was at ~170 in the morning, was at ~250 in the afternoon when it looked the craziest, and it's ~350 right now. I see this giant 350+ mass to the west of us that's been moving down all day and it seems like we're finally getting that BS now.

Crazy. I'm stuck in the office and wondering when the right time to leave is. Is it just going to continue getting worse tonight or will it let up around 7? I'll figure it out but this sucks.

The shots at 250ft were pretty amazing. Last night our street lights came on at 5:30pm. I've never seen anything like this and I feel like a pack day smoker again with the air quality (I haven't smoked in over 10 years).

I never did figure out how to upload a pic to BBI.

Probably a bit of an exaggeration but I had to spend a few hours outside today and I was hacking and wheezing a bit and I've not experienced that in a long time.

I will be glad when this shit passes.

I was telling my siblings and my dad that I go through this more than once. At least they don’t get ashes n their cars.
If it doesn't rain, how does this end
Essex : 6/8/2023 9:12 am : link
without rain?

I also ask our west coast friends, who deal with this more regularly, do things get cancelled when the AQI is this high in California or this just something people live with. I was just curious; I am glad my kids games have been cancelled as I don't want them playing in this crap and I don't want to sit outside in it. Was curious how communities deal with this when it happens more regularly.
This meme popped into my mind when this started.
darren in pdx : 6/8/2023 9:49 am : link

Jokes aside, it's not fun and you should definitely stay indoors unless you absolutely have to go out. If you go out, wear at least an N-95 mask.

If you have a box fan, you can get a MERV 13 or FPR 10 filter and tape it to the fan to make yourself an air filter.

Check your doors and windows, the place I was living at during the last few wildfires here our door didn't seal completely at the floor and smoke was getting in, we put towels to try to seal it as much as we could.

Yes, your pets are just as much at risk as you are! Limit their outside time to just use the bathroom, or if you have outdoor cats, bring them inside.
Pussies. :)

Grew up with a view of Manhattan from my North Jersey neighborhood in the 70's.

That view was common back then.

Of course, my entire neighborhood and town was riddled with cancer, but hey...

This all IS timely with ongoing attempts to undo clean air and water legislation. Definitely an eye-opener.

Agreed. From my neighborhood, smells of AV fuel from jet exhaust at Teterboro, chemicals from nearby plants in Ridgefield, So Hackensack and the delicious aromas from the Savarin coffee plant on Rt 46..

I spent a year working at the Polycast plexiglass factory in Hackensack. Powerful Methylene acrylic.

That wasn't the worst of it of course. Cancer alley, by Newark Airport killed scores.

All of this played into my moving upstate. Glad they cleaned the NYC Metro air up.
