Per Chris Haynes “ BREAKING: Phoenix Suns have notified star Chris Paul that he will be waived, making the future Hall of Famer one of the top free agents this offseason, league sources tell @NBAonTNT, @BleacherReport.”
In general, a team can sign their own player to more money than another team. Teams will do a sign and trade for those reasons. But if a player is waived, how does that work?

His salary for next season was only partially guaranteed, so it appears the Suns have decided to save themselves a LOT of money by waiving him and having those non-guaranteed dollars go away.

I thought all NBA contracts were fully guaranteed. The NBA is so confusing.
I'm in the opposite boat of UConn: I can't stand Paul. Can't stand him. An all time great PG-to me, he's a notch below Magic & Zeke-but I'm so glad he's never won a ring.
Paul aside, Irving-that space cadet-said he wants LBJ to come to Dallas. And I want to have a threesome with Margot Robbie & Jessica Alba. News flash: neither of those are happening.

Not a good idea. Bad things happen when LBJ goes to Dallas.
Suns still discussing scenarios with Paul, Paul wants to return to Phoenix...
Suns have also put Ayton on the trade block
Ayton strikes me as dude who got paid & doesn't GAF anymore.
Ayton falls into that Kyler Murray/Kirk Cousins niche. You know when you're signing him he's not worth the money. But you pretty much have to because your alternatives are limited.
Why for NYK: Ayton is more durable, is significantly better offensively with rebounding being negligible diff.
Why for Suns: Robinson is a better defensive anchor (what Vogel requires; to be fair, so does Thibs). Fournier gives them another shooter and the 2 for 1 deal helps their depleted roster after the KD trade.

which he did. Zero interest in trading for him. He isnt a bad player, but he doesnt seem like anything better then a solid to good player. Id much rather keep Mitch, i feel like he has more of an overall impact on the game then ayton does. Advanced stats have them having a similar impact as there PER and WS are pretty similar. And Mitchell does it on a very good contract, ayton does it on a deal that will play him 100 mill over the next 3 years (42 for mitch over the next 3 years)
i just want an offensive center, but i also think with Ayton a big part is not wanting to be in phoenix
Actually, overall I agree with you that we need an offensive center, barring no other upgrades, but not sure Ayton is the answer. I prefer KP for what this team needs and if they can get him without trading Mitch, even better.

a stretch 5 would be nice but I'd settle for someone who doesn't botch pocket passes and lose rebounds in traffic. Mitch brings a lot to the table but his hands are horrendous and result in too many missed opportunities for points. You can get away with that at times, but not in high level playoff games.
since he has no ability to get to the rim anymore. His PnRs used to be about as effective as any play in the NBA for a decade. One of the most helpless looking things you'd see on an NBA court was a big switched to Paul and then Paul would dance his way to a wet 16 foot bucket.
One of the best PGs ever but unfortunately the fact that he always gets hurt in the playoffs is going to be a big part of his legacy. Like I'm pretty sure CP3 at his best was better than Kidd/Payton, but those two guys were more reliable and did get to the Finals as the best player. But CP3 really was a special player even if he's always been a douche.

Yuck

No, they are setting up for the new CBA, and build around Booker and KD

NFW. Booker is one of the ten best players in the league. And he's only 26.
Phoenix needs to trade Ayton while he still might have some decent value. Find a partner to take his soft-ass play and add more depth/quality.
Plenty left in the tank to play that Kyle Lowry role on a championship team if he has the desire to do that.

trying to imagine soft ass Ayton and Thibs....
Really? A guy who puts zero effort in on defense and does not show up every night? No Thanks!

This is a great fucking joke
