Giants' Bryce Ford-Wheaton named an UDFA to watch

Pete from Woodstock : 6/8/2023 9:19 am
It'll be interesting to see how it all works out for 6'4" Bryce Ford-Wheaton. I was very surprised he went undrafted. I was also very excited we picked him up as a UDFA. He scored off the charts, I wonder why he went undrafted. Anyone have any insight?
BFW - ( New Window )
He

had bad drops at key moments in games.

He doesn't play to his timed numbers.

Exactly the type of guy you take a shot on, but his best hope is probably PS unless he stands out as a gunner (which he could).
two other guys to watch (IMO)

are Dyontae Johnson (Y28 has posted about him) and Gemon Green.

Habakkuk Baldonado is another.

^This. He had an 11.2% drop rate in college at West Virginia. A WR with his size and speed who can't catch is like a baseball pitcher who consistently throws in the high 90s but can't find the plate. Contrast him with Hyatt, who literally snatches the ball out of the air.

Maybe he just needs glasses. Worked for this guy...

Which is actually better than Johnston's drop rate. But combine that with the fact he doesn't play to his test times and you can understand why he wasn't drafted.
Good news is that PHI wanted him

and our coaching staff did well with Richie James and Hodgins. Hope they can turn the kid into this potential.

His best bet for this season is the PS
Since Hyatt and Ford are household names, I'll compare the two.

Hyatt MAY become our number 1 WR, but right now, there is only one thing about Hyatt that everyone is sure of: he's faster than most defenders and when open he has really good hands. Regardless of anything else, that one thing (or two things, actually) is enough to secure his making the team.

For Ford to make the team, or practice squad, he must find at least one thing that, not only is he good at, but better at than most other players. He has a lot of potential, but so far, he is only potential. He and the Giants coaches have until August 31 to find something that Ford can do really well.
And the crazy thing is they're only like 5 games out

They're pitching probably isn't quite good enough right now. However that division isn't real good especially with the Cards struggling so they can be competitive for a playoff spot quicker than you think.
Oops sorry wrong thread lol

NYG basically announced the first four members of the practice squad..

... when they gave six-figure salary guarantees to Ford-Wheaton, Johnson, Baldonado, and Green. One or two of them might conceivably make the roster if the stars align perfectly (performance, injuries, special teams, etc.). But Plan A is clearly to develop them for a year on the practice squad, preserve a year of salary control, and reassess in January. While it's fun to root for underdogs, the best-case scenario this year is that none of the UDFAs make the opening-day 53.
The year to watch for Ford-Wheaton is 2024.
Big Blue Blogger : 6/9/2023 5:55 am : link
He's one of just four WRs under contract beyond this season. Of those, Slayton is a potential cap casualty because he has a $2.4MM roster bonus due in March, which he will only collect if he solidifies a starting spot. Robinson needs to show he can stay on the field for more than two games in a row. Hyatt is the big hope for 2024; he's still an unknown quantity. Hodgins will probably be here too, but his contract status bears watching for next year, especially if his playing time diminishes.

For this year, there's a logjam of veterans: Campbell, Shepard, Crowder, Johnson, Smith. Even long shots like Sills, Mickens, Polk, and Pimpleton are probably ahead of Ford-Wheaton at this point, just on the basis of familiarity with the system.
Undisciplined route runner and questionable hands

Biggest weaknesses against BFW during draft process.
Boom or Bust candidate

but worth the $$. It may be technique that needs to be corrected.
He is the exact type of player to roll the dice on for an UDFA. Hold him for a year and see what he really is.
