NFT: French Open Thread: Alcaraz vs. Djokovic in the Semis

Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/8/2023 5:44 pm
Friday - 8:45 AM ET

This is the matchup I've been waiting all year for, it should've been a Final but Semis is good enough.

Djokovic and Nadal are tied with the most Grand Slams at 22. It's felt inevitable for a while now that Djokovic will eventually have sole possession of the most ever. But standing in his path is the current #1, the youngest year-end #1 ever, the defending US Open Champ, the future of the sport.

This feels like a rare opportunity where two legends from different eras have their careers overlap while still being really good. Brady vs. Mahomes type of vibe.

Djokovic in 5 is always a safe bet. Maybe the most resilient athlete I've ever seen. Alcaraz is the #1 but he did only turn 20 just a month ago. Is he truly ready for a 5 set War against the guy most consider the GOAT? I'll be rooting for Alcaraz but it feels like a toss-up.

The fact that Alcaraz is the favorite in terms of odds says A LOT though. Very excited for this one.
Rooting for Joker...
bw in dc : 6/8/2023 5:51 pm : link
but his movement hasn't looked great in this tournament - IMV. Maybe rust. Maybe father time starting to check in...

So, I see good reason to make CA the chalk. I mean, he destroyed Tsitsipas, who is a very good clay player. And he's younger, faster and just as talented...
I searched for Stan
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/8/2023 8:20 pm : link
And I see he’s not an active user anymore. That’s unfortunate. He was a fun poster who always enjoyed talking shit about certain great athletes. Tiger Woods obviously being the classic one with him.

Hey Stan. I honestly would’ve been interested in your thoughts on Alcaraz now since you weren’t buying him last year. I’m guessing you still wouldn’t be a big fan lol.

Working from home today so I can watch it. Go Joker.
Anyone have a stream?
Gap92 : 6/9/2023 8:46 am : link
I don't have Tennis Channel with garbage-ass Hulu.

I think Alcarez is the favorite
Essex : 6/9/2023 8:55 am : link
but it is hard to bet against Nole in any best of five match.
I just turned it on...
bw in dc : 6/9/2023 10:41 am : link
Corrier suggested that Joker is dealing with an injury??
This is incredible stuff
TDMaker85 : 6/9/2023 11:20 am : link
Just insane athleticism all around. I'm rooting hard for Carlos but man, not gonna be easy.

Both players are hitting the ball very cleanly.
Can Alcaraz get through these cramps?
Mad Mike : 6/9/2023 11:43 am : link
It'd be a terrible shame for this match to disintegrate like this.

The good thing is he's young. The bad thing is he's playing Joker, who is the master of grinding an opponent down...
I have watched tennis for many years
Essex : 6/9/2023 11:55 am : link
it is always impossible to tell the severity of these injuries/cramps or whatever. These guys are all actors. Just two sets ago it was Nole who looked down and out. Watch Alcarez come back like he never had a cramp in his life. And, to be clear, I am not saying he is faking, I am just saying these things have a way of sorting out during matches.
really sad to see it
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/9/2023 12:19 pm : link
end like this.

Alcaraz's body wasn't ready for the war of attrition.

Djokovic is just so damn tenacious.

It is inexcuable to not be ready. Federer and Nadal went toe to toe with this guy for hours on end at much older ages. Alcarez is a fraud until proven otherwise.

He's won a Grand Slam already and is the youngest #1 ever?

Today showed he needs to get his fitness level up. But I remember Djokovic having fitness issues as a youngster too, it happens. Alcaraz was not ready for the 5 set Djokovic challenge today.

But Fraud? Sorry but that's just dumb.

And it's not like Alcaraz had a rough road to the semis, either. He dropped one set before today. And that was in the second round.
He won a grand slam in which none of the big 3 played
Essex : 6/9/2023 12:33 pm : link
The rest of tennis stinks. Look at the guy's besides Djokivic. Rudd, Rune, Tsipas, Medvedev. He wan a watered down US Open. He was 20 years old and had two days off after a relatively easy match, if he could not even get ready for a third set, that does not bode well for him as a future star. The reason why Federer and Nadal and Djokovic are stars is because they are so good at the best of five format. And, you are right, Djokovic did have issues with fitness, particularly in Australia's heat, but I don't remember it ever being this bad except for one match against Roddick where he got injured in the QFs.
What a weird post

he’s a fraud and wasn’t ready? Shit happens in sports, especially injuries that pop up out of nowhere.

Again, the definition of fraud has context. People were saying he is a successor to the Big 3. In that context, his performance was fraudulent. He is talented, but I do not think people get what made the big three great. They came to play every match and even when they lost it was titanic struggles. This was total capitulation. Would overrated make you feel better than "fraud"
Good old Essex,

I feel fine, hopefully the same for you
UConn4523 : 6/9/2023 12:49 pm : link
it’s a new era, there’s going to be a new benchmark and players that meet/exceed them. If people think he’s going to be the next Nadal I don’t see what the big deal is - we have the next 10/15 years to find out. Your making it seem like he’s going the Nick Kyrgios route.
…..
Micko : 6/9/2023 2:16 pm : link
Too bad for Alcaraz but I don’t think he was going to take Djokavic today regardless. Don’t think he was ready to grind it out with him over 5 sets. Good lesson for him as he needs to solve the cramping which got him against Sinner as well. Djokavic is an animal. The way he changes strategy during the match is amazing to watch. With Nadal down and out might be time to start thinking about a grand slam.

Ironically, Joker struggled with cramping early in his career. But then he changed his diet, based on a series of different tests (I believe he had serious gluten issue), and he eventually was able to solve that issue.
Alcaraz
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/9/2023 2:48 pm : link
is only 20 but he'll probably need to start picking and choosing which balls to get to and try to end points earlier. This was definitely a learning lesson. I still think he's got next, but this was a pretty massive showing Djokovic to remind people that he's still the man.

After that ridiculous 2nd set, today is a complete disappointment. We'll see how the rest of the tennis season goes.
Ruud doing his thing so far

unfortunately don't think he has the level to compete with a motivated Djoker.

Yeah - second match sucked. Will Rudd continue to be a bridesmaid to the big 4?
Big 4 my ass
PaulN : 6/9/2023 4:59 pm : link
That's why you have someone calling him a fraud. Until he bears Djokovic in a grand slam March, he is no big anything Big 4. These players today are not the big 3.
I would have
PaulN : 6/9/2023 5:01 pm : link
Loved to see him come up when yhe big 3 were in their prime and win a grand slam at 20. Never would have happened.
Good to see

The sports hate/love cycle repeat itself lol.

I’ll be rooting for Alcaraz. I get why people are ripping him now. I wrote him practically a love letter in my OP and everyone is hyping him, only for him to go out 1-6 1-6 in his first showdown with Novak.

I get it. But this kid will be a force for a long time imo.

I'm with you. He'll be back and on top for a long time. He's tenacious. Takes years to reach Big 3 level of fitness.

Agreed. Alcaraz has all of the tools. Forget this board, the entire tour know CA is going to be great.

Once he gets his fitness right and continues to mature, you are looking at a guy who has what it takes to win 5+ majors.
Novak is the GOAT
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/12/2023 9:08 pm : link
It’s just very hard to argue at this point. Just a phenomenal athlete.

Beating #1 hyped favorite Alcaraz here is big because it’s yet another era he’s killing it in.

It’s ironic the health is what gets called out on. Because his fitness and tenacity are just about as good as I’ve ever seen out of anyone.

25+? Where will he put this record? We all know it “could’ve” been more already.

Winning each major 3X or > is a huge differentiator.

By surface, I think Sampras is the king on grass. Nadal is the king on clay. And Joker is the hardcourt king.
Agree that Novak is the goat
Andy in Halifax : 6/13/2023 8:30 am : link
I felt that way a few years ago and only cemented it since. I was such a massive fan of that era of tennis. I think the best thing that ever happened to Novak was Roger Federer ascending to the heights he did when he was just starting. Novak even said it pushed him to get better and better, and his amazing competitive spirit took over. He completely redesigned his serve so he could compete, he just kept working to get better. I remember him struggling to volley and slice when he started (he could obviously do both, but not at the elite level I mean) and eventually turned both into strengths. Eventually, he became a player without weakness.

I am a huge Nadal fan, but I put him behind both Djokovic and Federer. He was a clay court king and a hall of fame player on other surfaces as well but I don't think quite as good. Amazing to watch, but inflated stats due to having a game tailor made for clay and without any real other rival on that surface during his prime.

Federer was handcuffed by his one handed backhand, others may disagree but I think a two handed backhand is the superior shot technically. Hybrid is probably best, but there are times when you need a two hander and he didn't have it. Federer's return suffered the most in that regard. Give Federer Agassi's backhand and he may never have lost a match imo (hyperbole, of course).

Happy to see Djokovic keep winning these, what an absolute legend and a joy to watch all these years.
