...is a huge Marillion and PT fan.
I like prog rock but a little goes a long way. 1970's Rush is my favorite type of prog. Dream Theater is OK. But it's not a genre that I can listen to on a regular basis.
Even started a couple of cover bands that mostly played classic prog from the 70's, along with some arena rock style stuff. Unfortunately the pandemic killed both, but I still hope to get something going again eventually. Haha
Anyway, I just saw PT in concert a few months back. It was a fantastic show. There's actually a bunch of good modern prog bands. That includes pretty much anywhere Steven Wilson is involved. Neil Morse is another guy who has put together a number of good modern prog bands. Spock's Beard is quite good, as is The Neil Morse Band, Transatlantic, and Liquid Tension Experiment, depending on what styles of prog you like.
Others to consider would be Sound of Contact, Winery Dogs, Pineapple Thief, Levin Minnemann Rudess, and Ayeron.
I've been listening to Prog Rock since the early 70's. I have a huge collection of Prog Rock CDs. It is my favorite genre (although I do listen to Jazz, Rock and Classical too). But that's the beauty of Prog Rock...it fuses together all these different styles of music into longer pieces. Rather than drone on about my favorites, I will recommend the web site "progarchives.com". You will find everything you need to know there. An amazing website. You're welcome!
Especially the 2000's with Gavin Harrison from the In Absentia collection onwards is absolutely brilliant and moving work. I waited so long and their re-union tour last year was an incredible live performance. Saw the Radio City NYC show. Very powerful and orchestral. Incredible musicianship. I've turned a few people on to them and the reaction is always amazement.
up prog rock and then look for a list of prog rock bands.
Other than the British rock bands like Pink Floyd, Queen, Supertramp etc and American bands like Styx, Frank Zappa, Tool, System of a Down, the only unique one I found in my library was the Decemberists.
I wouldn't have known they counted as prog rock if I didn't look it up.
I just feel like they were alternative rock.
Hadn't listened to them in years. They reminded me of Pavement a little, but not as good or maybe Built to Spill.
The King is Dead was a good album.
Don't Carry it All is linked. 16 Military Wives was good too from what I can recall.
but my second love has always been prog. I just got back from playing an incredibly fun three-hour gig, so music is definitely something I want to post about right now! For me, the holy prog trinity is Yes (not the latest stuff, only older stuff with Jon Anderson), King Crimson, and Gentle Giant. Gentle Giant, in particular, was so musically innovative that they are still mind-blowing to me even though they broke up in 1980. For modern (and some older) prog bands, these are my favorites. They are all in spotify.
A.C.T - The most addictive band I have probably ever heard in my life. Progressive ear candy. I found out about them in 2021 and have listened to them more than anything else since then. Insanely talented musicians with an incredible knack for writing memorable melodies. It's all great, but Circus Pandemonium would probably be my recommended starting point.
echolyn (still active) - recommended starting album - As The World.
The Flower Kings (still active) - all great - pick any.
Anekdoten (still active) - all great - maybe Nucleus as a starting point, but you can't go wrong with any.
Moon Safari (still active) - recommended starting song (24 minutes long) - Lover's End Pt. III: Skelleftea Serenade,
Hasse Froberg and Musical Companion (still active) - recommended starting album HFMC - all great.
and Steven Wilson later in life, and I was amazed at how much great music I had missed. Riverside (mentioned above) is another great find and I'll add Opeth to the list.
Prog rock has many favors. If you want something more prog metal, try Animals as Leaders. Something softer, try Big Big Train. Something more psychedelic, Osric Tenticles. Something newer, try Polyphia. They're all fantastic to listen to.
They are the standard I generally compare prog bands to. The whole band was ridiculously talented. If you look into them, check out their Love stuff. Band on the Box is a fantastic concert video. There's also a SOS concert of them on YouTube that's also great. Their official live album, Playing the Fool, is one of my all-time favorite live albums.
In that vein you can also check out an Italian prog group, Premiata Forneria Marconi. Their music is similar with a lot more of counterpoint.
And as far as other classic prog bands, you can never go wrong with King Crimson, Genesis, ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Focus, among many others. The prog rock genre is filled with many great songs played by amazing musicians.

Marillion!
Especially for those who like very poetic lyrics that slant romantically. Early Marillion is pretty awesome.

Absolutely! Interview was the first album I heard in the 1980s. Playing the Fool was the 2nd. At that point, I knew I had to own everything they ever recorded. I think I bought all of the others within a month or two - lol. Such a unique sound.

Older stuff -
Yezda Urfa (1970s) - Sacred Baboon
Magma - Live/Hhai (the first track is insane)
A.C.T - ( New Window )
Great list. I always laugh when I remember that Sherman Hemsley from the jeffersons was huge prog rock fan and especially Gentle Giant.

This, it’s bizarre.
More recent, I'll second Porcupine Tree. Another favorite that might be prog (or maybe alterantive), is Oceansize.
Some more on the experimental end are obviously Eno and Radiohead.

Yeah, me too. The story about the Dinah Shore show is the best. I wish there was a video of it on YouTube somewhere.

I went through a phase (no pun intended) of being really into EBS' bass guitar effects pedals. The Porcupine Tree guy did some cool stuff with them.
