Thanks for sharing Dan. We're fortunate to have Cohen being willing and able to send money in deals in order to get more back in return from teams. Hopefully one of Canha or Pham are dealt in the next month to give Mauricio a chance to play in LF. Same goes for Vogey (DFA I'd imagine), so Vientos can DH regularly. This has gotten to be ridiculous.

Is the loss of deGrom a bigger deal than we thought?
moze1021 : 6/27/2023 7:25 pm : link
I'm not really talking about Jake's production in a vacuum..

But 2 things I think he brought:

1) A calm, professional, hardworking, unrelenting approach to his craft despite being the best in the world...leading by example

And maybe more in importantly:

2) He just made it look so easy! As a pitcher it must have been such a positive thing to see a guy be so easy and so dominant. The mental aspect of the game is so huge and I think it had to be contagious.

I'm not saying they should have kept him. It was obviously the right call especially given the injury...

But I think the staff misses him despite the Verlander addition.
Jeff O'Neil still looks lost at the plate
GiantBlue : 6/27/2023 7:42 pm : link
I know he is Jeff McNeil.......

But until that 300+ hitter is back......I have to think O'Neil kidnapped Jeff and is wearing a McNeil mask!!!!!
Seriously....this team has ZERO Fire! None!
GiantBlue : 6/27/2023 7:45 pm : link
I look at their faces and they all look like they have diarrhea!

Meanwhile...Atlanta already has 4 runs tonight.

Verlander and Scherzer are HoFers with world series rings. Whatever effect you're talking about with degrom would certainly apply to them too. There's no simple answer to why the Mets collapsed.

If he is getting ground balls he is an effective pitcher. The problem is getting him to do that with any consistency.

Ehh not really what I'm getting at...Max and JV no doubt first balloters but they are different. For one they are old and they grind it out every pitch now...I think Max himself really benefitted from being around Jake.

Jake just in another class..the Koufax, Pedro level type total domination with ease... Seeing that every 5 days and in bullpens had to have a positive impact. .

Or yeah maybe I'm reaching. Lol

Think you're reaching. He didn't even pitch a lot last 2 years.

Verlander in the AL had just as good a year as anyone in history.
I know some broadcasters are speculating hit batters are up
GiantBlue : 6/27/2023 8:53 pm : link
because the pitchers can't use the sticky stuff anymore.

I think it is more they know they don't have to bat themselves.

So it is open season.

The only way it slows down is the hitters in the other dugout get on their pitcher.....which will never happen.

I still think the Jeter jump throw is the inferior play to the Rey Rey slide/pop throw but yeah..pretty awesome play
I think you're reaching Moz
pjcas18 : 6/27/2023 9:22 pm : link
Scherzer is a 3 time Cy young winner and top 10 8 times. Plus he has a WS ring and 8 AS appearances.

I'm sure he enjoyed being around a talented player, but I don't think he was in awe of deGrom or in any way felt inferior. Sure he may have learned from him, but maybe deGrom could have learned from Scherzer how to be effective and stay healthy. Because I fear deGrom will go down as an elite pitcher but one with a short peak due to health.
and Verlander is more accomplished than Scherzer.

I don't think in all of MLB today there are many more accomplished pitchers than those two. Kershaw? anyone else?
Yeah not speaking of accomplishment...
moze1021 : 6/27/2023 9:27 pm : link
I guess it's more just getting the team in a groove..

Like how when you golf with better golfers you play better than when you are the best in a foursome because they make it look so easy vs playing with guys who are spraying it around.

Just feels like there are way way less games where Mets pitchers are just mowing down with ease...even Peterson tonight had to battle through.

But I hear you guys..
Brigham a great example...
moze1021 : 6/27/2023 9:32 pm : link

Lol!!

All jokes aside...they do need to rattle off a 10 win or 9-1 stretch and then could be back in wild card discussion
I hope we can see more outings like this by Peterson

the mets forays into trying to be more analytical have not yet worked.

poor implementation was probably the biggest single downfall of zack scott. mcneil specifically had his worst year.

when they were at their best last year it was all about waiting on good pitches and hitting them hard.

the league adjusted and their deadline acquisitions flopped. and not only that JDD exploded in SF. huge misreads.

did they change their approach this year with the shift rules going away?

marte looking cooked athletically has also been a huge setback because he was a key piece last year.

The way I have always viewed Cohen is he's basically like any of us, but with $15 billion or whatever. He grew up a Mets fan. He's suffered. He wants to win. And he'll spend whatever resources he needs to win. Doesn't care if the Mets are profitable. He wants to win.

That's why I don't get the mockery posts of him. Last season was a good one. This season sucks. Does it mean it's because Cohen isn't doing what is necessary to win? No.

It they don't succeed, he will clean house. But he will always do what he can to help the team win.
