have released nearly 30 players. Cole Gordon, Kolby Kubichek, Manuel Guance, Nick Meyer, Elliot Johnstone, Pedro Mercedes, Ramon Henriquez, Luis Castillo, Fernando Villalobos, Christopher Vasquez, Yordis Perera, Eric Santana, Gregory Leal, Jonaiker Palacios, Sammy Tavarez, Luis A Rodriguez (the righty), Joe Joe Rodriguez, Luis Montas, Dylan Hall, Chase Estep, Carlos Dominguez. Cesar Berbesi, Dyron Campos, Matt Minnick
Surprised the most with Dominguez and Estep. Estep only because he was 2022 draftee. Had a terrible year but still a surprise.

Maybe with all of the bats picked up in trade there just wasn't a roster space and it was not worth keeping him around as organizational fodder
Mets claim RHP Penn Murfee off waivers from Seattle.
Tim Britton

Mets announce they've claimed RHP Penn Murfee off waivers from the Mariners. Murfee has a 2.70 ERA over 80 appearances the last two seasons but had surgery to repair a torn UCL this past summer.

Penn Murfee could be a really sneaky pick up for the Mets for late-2024, but more so 2025 and beyond if he can get back to form.
Really effective relief arm the last two seasons for Seattle. Very unique look.
Current (some P injuries are ?) @mets P rehabbing TJS.... Dylan Ross, Robert Dominguez, Matt Allan, Coleman Crow, Joel Diaz, Raimon Gomez, John Valle, Marcel Renteria, Jace Beck, Bryce Montes De Oca, Penn Murfee #Mets
Per Martino, Counsell has yet to formally interview for @mets managerial position. While Stearns obviously knows Counsell exceedingly well, have to believe Cohen will meet with Counsell before any offer is actually made
@mets have had their first official managerial interview per @nypost…. @Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza. He was previously mentioned as a candidate by Andy Martino #Mets

their spending spree was/is still insane. living in padre country i asked a few who i know are close to the team how they were spending the way they were last offseason and never got an answer that didn't sound like rainbows/unicorns. their broadcast partner is bankrupt. seidler's net worth is a fraction of cohens and even cohen talked about his own spending not being sustainable. and while cohen may have spent more short term, he has handed out a lot less long term than the pads have.
soto is the most attractive asset but i wonder if they wouldnt be happier to have someone take machado or xander off their hands even though they just signed them. that could be a crazy offseason ahead.

To a few people about Andy Green and my takeaway is “pass”. Very vanilla personality, questionable with the bullpen and players liked him enough but didn’t have much of a presence.
Mendoza is very highly regarded, hard worker, he’s essentially been the Yankees version Luis Rojas. Has been coaching for 13 years despite not being 43. I doubt either one is the next manager even if Counsell passes.
lol. The Pads are a team I admire. I actually hate to see them go through this. At least their owners want to win and are willing to spend to do it, unlike a whole buncha other teams' owners. We are blessed to have Uncle Steve own this club. How goes it with you Rory?
P.S. We should give Eric in LI a visit out in Padreland! Beautiful part of the country. Nothing like sunshine and warm weather. The Northeast is cold and ooglay A.F. today.
Pareda has shown anything in AFL to indicate he won’t be a bust?
He’s bad a very poor AFL but it’s also his first full season and as a catcher that can be grueling. If he repeats his 2023 in 2024, then yeah you probably can label him a “miss”.

Be pretty shocked if Counsell isn’t the Mets next manager but if he decides to stay, so be it. Won’t cripple the Mets. Yamamoto remains the key to the off-season to me (I’m assuming they don’t land Ohtani, not looking to debate this opinion, just my gut)

-Counsell’s interview is today
don't really say this as a prediction, but there is no reason counsell shouldn't be ready to make a decision in the next few days ahead of offseason activity picking up. if you were him and you've had a month to think about all your options, why wait and delay being able to weigh in on decisions on the roster you're going to be managing? that's regardless of whichever team he decides to manage.
Its common knowledge at this point Counsel is a team player and looking to reset the manager market.
I just want to point out, this no longer means just $$, but terms. That's the thing to keep an eye on IMO.
let's see how this thing loands
Going to guess he’s a Met. 5 years 30ish million. Torre’s high AAV deal was 19.2 over 3, this obviously would be the biggest contract ever for a manager (something he could hang his hat on) and move the current highest AAV from 4.5 (Bochy) to 6+, a 1/3 increase. Not saying it’s a lock he comes. I just think he will.
bhill here's the encouraging sign on parada - extra base hits
all year he has hit 1 extra base it every 10 at bats. every level. he has 7 in 62 in AFL. that's why he has a 657 ops / 403 slg despite hitting under 200. 1 xbh per 10 at bats is 50+ in a full year, which is basically a 20-30 homer player.
that will not carry the rest of his game if he doesn't improve the BA or find some level of playable defense somewhere, but it's a lot easier to improve the non-power stuff than vice versa. and if the bat improves enough without the defense at least DH is an option.
he's also playing ahead of his age more than a typical college draftee because he'd only played 2 years at GT. Conforto for comparison played 3 years of college so his age 21 was his draft year and he never got above A-. his first full year was his age 22 which will be next year for Parada, and he's already at AA/having played in AFL. Next year is the key year for him.

Answer to the question of why it seemingly took so long for Mets to interview Craig Counsell: There was a long phone conversation already. Plus, obviously, he and Stearns know each other well.
not really predicting today is a final "let's do this" meeting, but also not predicting it's not. i agree with you dan, if i had to bet one way or the other its happening and probably in the next few days.
"I don’t think those recent contracts, certainly negotiated by others, are really relevant to anything that has to do with what’s going to happen in the future," Boras said on The Show podcast with Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman. "Particularly with Pete Alonso."
The two deals that are most often cited when trying to determine what Alonso should get paid are the ones inked by Matt Olson and Freddie Freeman.
Ahead of his age-28 season, Olson signed an eight-year extension with the Braves worth $168 million.
Entering his age-32 season, Freeman signed a six-year, $162 million free agent deal with the Dodgers.
Neither Freeman (a more well-rounded hitter than Alonso) nor Olson (who was younger and two full years from free agency when he signed his deal) is a perfect comp for Alonso, but it's close enough.
But Boras doesn't believe those deals should color what Alonso should get.
"We all work in different markets, and I got Mark Teixeira a contract where he became a world champion with the Yankees for $180 million in 2007," Boras said. "I also understand I got Prince Fielder a contract at [$214 million] in 2011. There are different markets, different representation, and different dynamics you look at."
Was explicitly told the Mets will not chase QO FA’s other than Ohtani. Snell would cost them their 2nd and 5th round picks, about 2.5 million in draft money and 1 million in IFA money
Also “had to” meet with Cohen so for all we know this is the final step. I’m not saying I’ve heard that. Just that it’s possible.
right and in this case with the public-ness of it and fact that counsell wouldnt be a direct report to cohen, i doubt they get to that meeting if either side isnt prepared to move forward.
Mets have one of their biggest (if not the biggest IFA bonus- a rumored 3-4 million) signings coming in 2025 so losing 1 million in IFA money is something they really can’t “afford” to do.
I think the upper, upper ceiling the Mets are willing to go with pete is 7/$200 ballpark.
Which Boras probably would laugh them out of the room on.
Unforuntately, unless Pete steps in and demands to stay a career met, I don't think this is happening. And it honestly might be for the better for both sides that way.

their pool is i think right around 6 so they could they'd just have to punt on any other high priced guys or go with a super small class of just 1-2 more guys.
i dont expect them to do it bc there are enough FA SP who wont require it but i dont think it's a total 3rd rail. obviously they are prepared for the possibility in the event they get ohtani. like if that were to happen id imagine they aren't going to totally blow up their IFA class and break a bunch of deals they've made, id imagine they already have the $1m set aside but would rather be able to spend it as opposed to not.

5.2 million for 2023 for the Mets (he’s a 2025) giving an example but no teams break deals all the time. In fact, Eppler is currently being sued for 2 broken deals
Draft would be greatly impacted losing a 2nd and 5th round pick as well. Thats significant draft pool spending, especially if they pick 17th and not 6th. Extremely high price to pay

Agreed Dan. You lose those picks for Ohtani and don't think twice about. Blake Snell? He's really good but probably not the path forward I see the Mets taking.

And yeah Ohtani is 1 of 1. Snell not so much. Good pitcher but he’s not particularly young (31 this upcoming season) and is the kind of move you make when you’re close and need one more piece. That’s not the Mets on paper. I’d be stunned if the Mets pivot and make such a move.

on an early extension i agree. im sure boras is trying to use devers as a comp and i dont think he's totally wrong to do so since devers defense is a bigger negative than alonso regardless of where he plays (which will probably be 1b or DH sooner rather than later).
but if he gets to FA, im just not sure where he goes.

Details on the latest with Craig Counsell, per @martinonyc:
🔸 Counsell had a long telephone chat with the Mets: "Some sources classified that as an interview, others classified it as a conversation. He is receiving his callback Thursday."
🔸 Counsell is open to the idea of coming to New York
🔸 Team hoping to hire Counsell do not know where his talks with the Brewers stand
One source called Mendoza a "finalist" with the Mets, but another source called that word too strong. The Mets themselves have not anointed "finalists." We are in a semantic season, so here are the facts:
- Mendoza had a first-round interview last week, which was not in person.
- Several other candidates received first-round interviews and did not receive in-person callbacks.
- Mendoza had an in-person callback Wednesday.
- That interview was said to have gone well, and Mendoza remains involved in the process.
